100% What's upsetting with the whole mascara thing is that she really thought her supporters were dumb as if they wouldn't notice a false lash. Which is funny considering most of them wear makeup and have been in the beauty space for the last 8+ years. No one is upset that she's working with brands or is partnered or being paid. It's the lies that are the problem and really obvious ones at that. Honestly it's just more insulting than anything.

It was really immature like why not just own up to it it’s such an obvious lie and people aren’t gonna trust her cuz she couldn’t take responsibility.

@@carlycrays2831 I think the difference here is we know and have known for years that companies will use deceptive advertising techniques to sell products. Influencers became popular for educational content and to review products so we could see how they actually perform. This isn’t just an issue from her though. We’ve seen it many times on KZread (like when everyone was pushing morphe). I just don’t see the point in someone being an influencer and reviewing products if they’re just going to be blatantly dishonest. There are KZreadrs I trust but tbh most of them have sold out and I don’t watch them anymore. Ads are one thing but intentional deception is another. I think people see their favorite influencers as trustworthy rather than companies who are posting purely for profit but now the influencers are trying to line their pockets as well. I don’t appreciate the deception from companies either, and I don’t have anything against her but I will only be watching her tutorials and not her product recommendations from now on.

  • @leiabeanie
    @leiabeanie Жыл бұрын

My opinion is that the issue behind "MascaraGate" is much more complicated than it appears at first glance. Many people don't and won't get past the "it's just mascara" mentality, possibly because TikTok and social media in general absolutely do promote aggressive advertisement methods and obsessive consumerism. However, we are living in a world where the wealth gap is increasing at an alarming rate for numerous reasons, and a large player here is greed. When you're an influencer as popular as Mikayla, you're selling your followers to brands, not honest reviews. She presumably does not feel obligated to be truthful as long as the money keeps flowing in - it has already bought her a fancy house in a market where many young adults will never own their own home. These lies - and I do mean lies, plural, whether people choose to acknowledge it or not - send you, as the consumer, directly into the hungry mouths of brands while she lines her own pockets. Influencers are looked to for honesty and relatability, and she is not doing her job.

I remember when I started watching makeup videos on youtube, I would get really frustrated with my skin, because I really thought that those people had perfect skin with no texture, no pores...etc...I really believed that a primer could hide all my "inperfections", I would get sad when they didn't ... Then I understood what a bright light in front of my face could do and that pretty much everyone I was watching was using a filter... Now that I am older I feel really good with my skin, flaws and all. So, it is not only money what we loose with false advertising, we can also loose our confidence and self love expecting something that isn't going to happen.

Naw, it was a PR stunt that both her and L’Oréal agreed on and that’s why she isn’t saying anything because it’s part of the contract. I mean she’s done stuff like this before and goes “viral” and creates a huge problem that everyone and their brother talks about and look what it’s done? It’s sold a crapton of mascara for L’Oréal and made EVERYONE review it / talk about it which in turn sells more mascara because in all honesty it seems to be a decent product. This was nothing more than a PR stunt, a shady ass or stunt but still one none the less.

@@beckyward89 even if that’s true, it’s still an objectively shitty thing for her to do regardless and she deserves equal amount of criticism for it; at the end of the day she’s still deceiving the very people who supported her & ensured that she was even in any position of influence to take ad partners such as L’Oréal in the first place! I’ve been in advertising/marketing as an adviser to companies & their brands for over a decade, & I can assuredly say that this whole stunt, whatever the motive, was an incredibly idiotic move for Michaela. Her behaviour amounted to a blatant, shameful betrayal of every one of her supporters & revealed the glaring amount of disrespect she has for followers, and her cavalier attitude since & refusal to address the issue displays an equal if not greater, additional degree of arrogant derision on top of that - she’s lucky she has whatever remaining audience the has imo. That said, in L’Oréal’s case, well they’re essentially grinning bc the optics of this fiasco make them look far less like an equally culpable co-conspirator & more like a 3rd party ‘innocent’ bystander - they can kinda write their own story here & as a far more powerful, multi-billion dollar company, they can pretty much accept whatever responsibility they feel like. Here, L’Oréal’s public image as a largely faceless corporation is actually *benefitting* them; bc whilst they’re not coming out of this looking particularly good, Michaela is definitely the face of the scandal & sacrificial lamb in this debacle. Additionally, L’Oréal is receiving an ENORMOUS amount of free - even if not 100% positive - exposure advertising for their mascara & brand that’d otherwise cost them millions of dollars, which *will* translate to an uptick in their sales, which I can tell you is something they care far more about than a temporary (& it is temporary), hit to their popularity..So yeah for L’Oréal it makes sense for this to be staged in theory (but not practically as ink there’s still too much risk involved for them), but for Mikayla definitely not, and so I don’t personally think it was all a scheme:

Hahaha, dinosaur here as well 🤣. I simply refuse to watch TikTok. I'll always remain a reader, prefer blogs and books, but definitely can enjoy some KZread channels. Though I've noticed these are all people who don't do drama, who are all transparent and very much themselves. I can count the ones I watch on a regular basis on one hand though. It also helps I've never really been the type to care about trends. I love fashion, I like experimenting with makeup, taking care of my skin etc, but have always done so in my own way. Peer pressure, much to my parents surprise, didn't do much for me either (I was the only one in a large group of friends who didn't do alcohol or weed). Now that I'm approaching my 50s I'm apparently supposed to dress and look a certain way either. Well, I definitely do not adhere to the idea that 40+ women should refrain from bright colours, can't wear prints etc. I wear 80% of all existing colours (ironically my profile picture is of me in a black & white dress, hihi), love me a novelty print - one of my dresses f.e has sugar skulled skeletal kitties in turquoise, red, pink, yellow, purple etc on a black bg. I also own one with big 🦜 parrots, one with psychedelic butterflies, one with bears in uniforms, a skirt with a library on it that also has rabbits 🐇 on the shelves and I combine that with hats, a bangle stack, coloured shoes/boots or even gloves when I want to. And other days it's simply a jewel toned - my favourite shades - look that's more understated and elegant or a casual black & white outfit that has more edge. It depends on mood and event. But for all, the point is: I wear what I like. I don't give a sh*t about all those weird trends, nor about beauty/fashion ideas that have been around for ages. I do and wear what makes me feel comfortable and beautiful. Whether it's out of fashion or not. Lucky side effect: I never have the idea that my body isn't good enough for certain (fast) fashion trends, like all those crop tops we have now, or the long, wide, boxy dresses from some time ago that only looked remotely okay if you were 6ft tall and a size 0. My closet works just fine for what I have to work with ;). I truly hope that my 14yo niece, who I sadly see very little of, thinks of my attitude every once in a while. She doesn't need to copy my style, but I'm hoping she'll at least internalises the reasons behind it: me accepting myself/ me understanding what works for me best. That way she might not let TikTok, FakeBook, Instagram filters and all those things influence and hurt her too much. I think that's the only defence we have against self- esteem crushing marketing/ trends as well as influencers with little scruples or, worse, malintent. We can't change the world, or in this case, social media all at once. But we can begin by ourselves, and hopefully *influence* our kids/ nieces/nephews/cousins/neighbours/friends etc in a good way by just doing that. I wish everyone the best. And please know: you're beautiful and good just the way you are 🙏 ❤️.

The reason this hit so hard is because Mikayla BUILT her platform on her struggle, poverty, and progress. This hurt her supporters cuz it vividly displayed her priorities have changed and was wildly offensive to people who looked up to her and are still in their own trenches. She no longer looked grateful to her followers, and her allegiance is now with money.

TikTok pisses me off so much. I work at ~the makeup store~ and the number of people who come in looking for things (retinol) that they're only getting because someone told them to (you're 13???? Why are you getting retinol?????) and don't listen when we try to advise them otherwise, and then will come back with a severely damaged skin barrier and are still looking for acids because some TikToker told them it saved their skin 🥴🥴🥴 or the people that come for things that went viral on TikTok and blame staff for popular stuff constantly being out of stock (because brands don't have 80 billion units just waiting to be sent out and things take time to make)........ I've had enough lol

My main issue with the mascara is that she is obviously “partnered” with L’Oréal already. She does adds for them already. She could have easily taken the high road and said: “finally, people are talking about this amazing mascara” since she did the video as a duet essentially. She supposedly bought the mascara because a different influencer who said it was good. If she was just honest enough to say something like “you already know I’m a L’Oréal partner and they hit it out of the park with this mascara”. At least then we’d assume it was an ad.

So here's my ad for this mascara I love ❤️!" And then not add falsies ... and since she's come back she's had this hateful ,snooty, Stuck up attitude like she's untouchable and genuinely doesn't care what anyone thinks about her lying.... its like the real her is showing and I don't like this Mikayla.... at all ... I hate she lied , but she could've apologized ,but she came back with an ugly attitude and an "I don't give a fk about any of you or your opinions " and she should care about the people that got her where she is now ..... Oh and at first she had a little tiny "loreal partner ad " or something like that but the filter name covered it and it flashed for like half a second ,you couldnt even see it unless you saved or downloaded the video but since this "scandal" has happened she went back and edited the video to show that it is an ad .... so she knows she was wrong.... but she refuses to apologize ...bc she doesn't care about her fans .... at least that's what I feel ... idk ....

I think it's a part of secondary illiteracy - we (I generalize, we=people) are getting more and more lazy with thinking in general, because we get everything in short, compiled info/videos. We don't understand what we read, we don't think critically, we don't analize (except some celebrities scandals of course, duuuh), we just take the info in - and all platforms is pushing similar content to what you've seen, so you don't even get "the other side" if you don't seek it.. It's just sad, I've seen younger people (older millenial here) who couldn't search for something in Google, when it didn't show up in first results, they weren't able to even think of using different wording, phrases etc. So many resources, not enough people using the full potential of them.

And I am talking about people without any dysfunctions. I think we're on the path to use pictograms as a main written mean of communication again ; ) It is said that laziness, not necessity, is the true mother of invention, but in this case I really think it makes it easier to just be stupid and don't care (because through the algorithms internet will connect you to the same kind of people mostly) so no shame of not knowing something AND not wanting to learn, involved ; )

This is WHY you're one of the ONLY beauty "influencers" I support anymore. I used to love the beauty community but it is so toxic and disingenuous it's not as drama filled but has become faker and faker and people just WAIT for the smallest drama to go insane and attack and "cancel" people... this is why I enjoy ur content. You are a PROFESSIONAL, talented, you hold people accountable while still approaching every situation with respect and a genuine heart and that is why I respect and adore you SO MUCH. The thing that ticks me off is not actually the mascara drama, but are people piggybacking on that “drama” being all like “I have never accepted money to review and would never do so” but are on the PR list of brands who demand a lot for even giving you the product (or straight up are investors in Morphe and pushed it non stop and return now because the brand is bankrupt :)) The beauty community not just on TikTok is full of filters, fillers and fakes and everyone at least once wants you to buy something. That’s just how it is and I can understand the hussle, it’s just hard to find the grey area between review and commercial.

I was contacted by a brand on my other KZread channel to do a collab. I was floored, the first one I had ever gotten. I got product and in exchange I was to give an honest review of the product (in this case Heat transfer vinyl), and I tried it out in a video after doing an unboxing and while it was great I would have been 100% ready to say it wasn't had it sucked. Even as it was my first time my video had the disclosure option checked off, it was stated in my video and it was in the description box. Apparently that was all a wee bit overboard but hey, disclosure is important. Even more so in the beauty community, as most of rely on influencers to show us products we might not have heard about. The falsies bit was never the issue for me, it was violating the FTC guidelines. Now I'm here wondering how many of her videos this lack of disclosure happened and we weren't aware of. I have always liked Mikayla's content but the trust is gone for me and that's sad.

👏👏👏👏 I've literally began breaking up with all my platforms except KZread. It is easier to take control of my algorithms so I don't feel triggered by every other video that surfaces. I can relate to the creators I love and it's easier to move past the ones I just can't get on board with. KZread shorts is my TT now when I have a few quiet minutes to spare, but I prefer the "conversation" I get from creators here. I feel included, not yelled at or bombarded every 30s-3minutes.

I’ve been watching the beauty community since 2006, I still have the Sigma Paris palette, one of the first influencer collaborations. I just feel like sponsorships sort of ruined the community. Not everyone of course, but the money just took over certain people. I also blame the “going viral” thing to make certain people the most popular and the ones people want to believe. And then the DRAMA became apart of the lure and appeal of the community too. I’m in my mid 30s now and discovered you a couple years ago and I always say your channel is so refreshing, cause you’re really about the makeup and the teaching. No hate if you’ve ever been sponsored/PR or anything at all. It’s just all so unfortunate. Wow this was too long, thanks for reading it so.

As someone who does makeup for a living, I feel so bad for the consumer sometimes because social media can be very misleading; for ex, I’ve had so many people come in with pics of filtered skin wearing foundation and I feel like I have to be the voice that I for bursts the bubble. Yes you can do things to soften and enhance the skin, but skin is still skin, not a filter. Just my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️

She used to do lot of reviews of Indie brands and was really excited about innovative products from these up and coming brands. That has all gone out the window sadly. It’s all the latest top selling brands that every person and their dog has already reviewed and most of them are paying her to talk about them now. And what’s sad is most of those brands don’t need the orders. What used to be so amazing was seeing her review one of these indie brands and all of a sudden that brand sells out and they are so thankfully to her. It’s the way it goes now on social media unfortunately but hopefully she takes some pause and then moves forward.
