My native language is Russian, also Ukranian. I learn Greek (B2+), English (B2+), French (B1) and Italian (A1 - recently started it). My goals are to improve all of them. The main thing for me is to be able to comunicate with natives and to express my feelings. Gr and Eng --> C1, French - to speak more and to learn to speak more fluently, Italian - to reach A2-B1, yep (and to speak with natives this year using Italian). Good luck you, u're cool!!

Thank you for keeping it real. Your notebooks remind me of mine. I've got all kinds of notes from lots of different resources and native content. I also start and stop languages all the time. My first language is English, then I started learning American Sign Language (ASL) when I was 5, and within a few years I was fluent. I used to be an interpreter for the Deaf and I love teaching ASL classes. Right now, I'm learning to read Spanish, Korean and Mandarin and dabbling a little bit with Italian. In the past, I've played with French and German and I'm thinking about starting German again, it was a very fun language. My goal with all my non-native languages is to be able to consume native content, especially newspapers, books, vlogs and documentaries.

Thanks for your comment! See, Sign Language is one of those languages I've never got round to. I'd LOVE to learn Spanish Sign Language at some point. While my approach may not have been the most efficient over time, I must understand that "past me" did what he could with what he had at each point in time, and I'm at peace with that HAHA

We learn languages the same! I find it too that straying away from your native language once you have a basis or become intermediate is good - it shows you can rephrase things from definitions to summaries, and it keeps you thinking in your TL. We learn similar, I keep notebooks too with phrases and words (Since i am more advanced) in CONTEXTS which is key! vocab lists can work in context, like remembering that you learned that "métier" is a job because you watched an EasyFrench video about peoples professions (haha). I am native in English, pero aprendí el español, et maintenant j'apprends le français. Saludos y bonne chance !

Your notebooks and your approach on language learning are so interesting and have put me in the mood to continue my language journey with more consistency and perseverance. It seems that learning language has never been so fun! I am a French native speaker, and I can tell that the way languages are taught here are not engaging at all. I've been trying to grasp on German (B1) for so long (started learning at school when I was 6), but still can't speak really well. I've decided to work more seriously on it, along with Russian, maybe Spanish and more to come... My biggest challenge for this year is to find the time in my busy school schedule to actually see progress and reach fluency! 😁

It took me a long time to get the hang of reading and writing, but I feel more confident now than I did a year ago. (Even if I still have no clue what is being said.)

As someone around the same age, being a teacher, having learned a lot of languages - there are a lot of things I agree on! I have started Thai last year and trying to stick to the writing system of the language system is really important! I also recommend connecting the letter to the correct sound (or as close as you can get for now) I am not a huuuge fan of vocabulary lists…at least not really for studying. But I do like to write words out :) so I make lists occasionally. I found that I really enjoy short stories recently! Finding one for my level can be a bit hard sometimes though. Also…besides finding a study method that works for you, I think it is important to be compassionate to yourself. Sometimes life gets in the way and that is ok! P.s.: Love the Pokémon sticker!

Hello there. I stumbled upon your channel by accident and have to say that your ways of learning languages seem appealing to me. I wish you good luck in productive learning and also doing your job as a teacher! As a person with some teaching experience, I feel so connected to you. Happy to be a new subscriber. I'm a Russian native with sufficient knowledge of both English and German. My conversational Norwegian is not that bad, I guess. That was kinda funny: once upon a time I made friends with an exchange student from the Faroe Islands, who has lived in Denmark for several years prior to doing an exchange year at my university, and in some cases I found us understanding each other better in Norwegian, cause it's very close to Danish. I beg anyone to never ask me speak in Danish though, it's phonetical side is horrendous, and to this day I haven't learned how to tame it. I took French at school, however, I am now only capable of recognizing vocabulary, both written and spoken, but I completely suck at grammar (I feel like Romance grammar is just not my vibe). My knowledge of Spanish is pretty much here and there. I might consume too much Spanish-speaking content, particularly of Argentinian descent, like listening to songs, watching interviews, reading articles etc., yet I may assume as well that my recognition abilities mostly derived from my background of learning French. Again, vocabulary only, no grammar, so, being unable to build phrases and sentences from scratch, I feel very awkward and insecure communicating in this particular language. My most recent discovery was Japanese. I've been learning it over a year now and, not to brag or anything, my progress in Japanese may finally be the progress I'm genuinely proud of (because for a huge chunk of my life I was convinced my brain didn't fit for learning any of the Asian languages). I'm currently working on improving my conversational skills and expanding my vocabulary in both kana and Kanji. The latter is such a pain in the 🍑, tbh, however, I found a solution. I'm a huge crossword enthusiast, therefore I downloaded an app allowing me to learn and review vocabulary in both kana and Kanji, respectively. I also do flashcards for Kanji, and even arrange my own crosswords. What I, personally, find the most important aspect, is that one takes their time to analyze a new Kanji and its readings and make the respective flashcard by hand. To those who struggle with Kanji I can surely advise the following strategy: write, write, and write. If your brain and hand are connected like conjoined twins almost, you'll spare a lot of time. It does take much effort, but I'm so grateful that I'm able to identify 400+ Kanji and memorize more words faster and more naturally. Fun fact: my real nightmare wasn't even grammar, cause Japanese grammar is pretty cool and multifunctional, but Katakana alphabet. Everything about it was just wrong for me! Guess what, I mastered it through learning On'yomi readings of Kanji. I'm sooo sorry for this being a long story. It was totally unnecessary to talk that long on one subject, but I kinda had too many fun facts to share.

My native language is german, i studied english and french at school but i wouldnt say, that my french is good. but i want to improve it :) currently, i am studying thai and also russian but i am focusing on thai because i want to go there next year and possibly also move there. in the future i also want to study swedish, tagalog, czech and dutch but thats for the future lol. i enjoy watching how others take notes on their languages, it's very motivating

@@donraitan totally get that! keeping many languages in your head at once is sometimes pretty difficult so that's why i chose to focus on thai for now and kind of paused russian currently. i am also in my second to last year of school right now so things are especially stressful :') the languages other than thai and russian are just in the back of my head since i like the countries and culture but i dont have the goal to achieve a high level in those

Hi! Thanks for stopping by! I actually had a Greek-only channel from 2014 to around 2016. Glad you liked my notebooks ;) Όσον αφορά τα ελληνικά κανάλια, βλέπω τη Σοφία Μουτίδου, spoileralert.gr και Vassilikou. These three are the ones I can think of right now. I also watch some interviews every now and then, or even recipe videos. Just whatever I feel like.

Also, how are you getting on with Italian and Spanish at the same time? So many similarities and so many differences! Speaking "itagnolo" or "espaliano" is my biggest problem haha

wow i don't thrive on learning from textbooks and following a rigid plan (with self-study) unless im in a course, but even then i tend to lose steam and end up quitting. but!! this notebook method reminded me of what i used to do that early on in my lang learning days, back in high school i used to have several small notebooks filled with lang patterns i pick up from frequent exposure, which lead me to understanding lessons a lot better and made me more engaged in class. so thank you for reminding me of that!! i already grabbed a notebook to get started on! im gonna let this guide me into setting my own study plan since i thrive on learning whatever im interested in atm and what i choose to write in my notebooks will be proof.

my native lang is arabic (+english sorta), and im also learning korean right now (i think im between a b1 and a b2?). i used to learn french (reached b2) but i forgot everything after graduating high school, & im a beginner (but not seriously learning) a couple of languages just from exposure and my brain detecting patterns, in romance langs mostly. now im interested in either picking french back up or learning german next? after im more comfortable with my korean.

I started studying English when I was 9. Then I graduated in English Studies, moved to an English-speaking country, worked in higher education and came back. ;) I have no English-speaking relatives or anything of that sort.

My best foreign languages are Hebrew and French. For me the hardest aspect is pronunciation and accent. In both languages, my accent is reasonable, but natives can hear that I am not native. In particular, I have a hard time with the Hebrew reish, especially when there are two consecutive reishes, individual gutterals are ok, but I find two consecutive gutterals hard to pronounce. In French I find it hard to pronounce r and u. Any advice would be appreciated.

I can't help much with Hebrew, but with French u [y], I'd say something my French teacher would say: "Say /i/ but your mouth should be in the shape of /u/". I'm sure there are some French-speaking channels which will explain that much better.

Hello and Congratulations! I'm a Pole. It was nice for me to listen to your story about the process of learning foreign languages. Some of them I learn too. The first language that I had to learn was Russian. It was taught for 4 years in primary school and for 4 years in secondary school (high school). I didn't like it because I was not good at it and it was compulsory (Poland was at the time in the so called Communist Block and Russian played the role of lingua franca inside the Block). In my secondary (or high) school there was German language for 4 years but it was taught on a rather low level so I didn't get a knowledge enough to talk in it. But during the years 4 and 5 I started also to learn English on my own using a textbook with pronouncing signs (API) and records. The thought of learning English came about due to difficulties in communication with Swedes which I encountered at a summer camp, because they talked only in English and a little German with us, Poles. During my College years I was learning German and English. Then I tried to learn some Swedish too as I liked it very much (it sounds beautiful) but then there were not many materials for learning it. For many years after ending education I was learning English and a little bit of German, but only from time to time and only on my own. During those years I also started to learn French but was learning it for a rather short time as it seemed to me too difficult (especially the conjugation of verbs which is quite difficult). I even tried to learn some Hungarian language, I was even going for classes to learn it better. But Hungarian language is very difficult (it has a very different grammar, it is from another branch of languages, Finno-Ugric) and I had to quit learning it due to lack of time. I used to listen to foreign radio stations to try to understand German and English (1980-ties) and a few years later (1990-ties) I used to watched satellite TV programs. Sometimes I even used to buy German or English Newspapers but they were very expensive at the times. Then times of the Internet have come and it changed everything in foreign languages area. Now there are so many more possibilities of learning foreign languages than ever! Not long ago, the previous year, I started to learn Spanish! I like Spanish but it's rather difficult for me - there are some strange things like 3 equivalents for 'to be' (ser, estar, haber) and quite difficult conjugation. Now I'm 56 and I don't know if I'll manage to learn Spanish language to a level enough for understand everyday texts or talks but I hope so. Now I'm still at a beginner level. Spanish has quite difficult pronunciation too like pronouncing 'b' and 'v' is b at the beginning of a word (Am I right?) or something between b and v and pronouncing of 's' is something between English s and sh. And what about pronunciation of 'll' like in word 'paella' - is it lya or ya? The textbook I've got teaches how to pronounce standard Spanish in Spain but what about Latin America? Could I understand it (similar difficulties occur with different kinds of English although in Polish schools they teach rather British English)? In the end I'm European so I'll learn European Spanish where 'cinco' is similar to 'think' (is it really?)! Tell us also more about Italian language - is it very similar to Spanish or not? What are the differences? As to the method of learning, I learn foreign languages traditional way, using a textbook and a dictionary. I also use free films on YT but they contain not so many material as textbooks. I don't use language applications yet except for an application for learning Korean letters (or signs, I don't know how to call them).

I feel like Italian is like "Spanish with French grammar". I'd say this veeeery loosely. Castillian Spanish vs. Latin American Spanish. There are many differences, but I feel like you'd be able to understand most things. Still, I'd always recommend familiarising yourself with different kinds of Spanish, especially everyday content, as it is there that things tend to change the most. Grammar is mostly the same (with some exceptions which are country-specific).

Ruben HELP!!! Please - I wanted to ask you .. I’m trying to explore different angles to interact with the language. Sooooo, I’m creating my own magazine in Russian. This is all based on conversations. First, I’ll have a conversation, then jot down the new words and expressions, and then I’ll design a page that looks like a page out of Vogue magazine, using all the expression I learned in that conversation. For example, I recently designed a page to help me remember complex names of clothes. I’ll called it: Winter Clothing from Head to Toe. (Both “Winter Clothing” and “Head to Toe” were new expressions for me.) I also included several phrases that my tutor said about each element. While talking about boots he said: “I never feel cold when I wear these boots.” Or And when talking about jean mini-skirts with fur-coat jackets, he said: “This was the worse fashion trend I have ever seen.” So, by creating this magazine page, using all the new words and phrases from my conversation lesson, it is sort of satisfying closure to that experience. I feel it lets me interact with the language. My goal is to create 100 pages of phases and expression and print it out into a book that looks like a magazine! What do you think? Good? Effective? Waste of time? Help!!!!

Sounds like a lot of work (especially the design part) but if you feel it'll be fun, go for it! I'd say try to streamline the process as much as possible so you don't get overwhelmed.

I started like 16 years ago. Did 2 years in college and then on my own.

Your notes look sooo neat! I mean, the pen colours, the off-white paper shades... I really like the idea of focusing on chunks and expressions rather than single words (lexical approach and stuff). By the way, two years ago I did a webinar on KZread on different ways to organise a lexical journal. Have you looked into apps like italki / Hello Talk, etc? I don't know much about them, but that way you might be able to interact with different speakers. Good luck with your learning! I'll be sharing my thoughts on here, so you're welcome to join

Να κάνεις ένα βίντεο φιλαράκι στα ελληνικά !! Μπράβο σου πραγματικά!! Εγώ είμαι δασκάλα ελληνικών σε ξένους - εντυπωσιάστηκα από τις σημειώσεις σου και την προφορά σου! Μαθαίνω ιταλικά, σουηδικά και γερμανικά αυτό το διάστημα. Και μιλάω αγγλικά και γαλλικά. Άρχισα να χρησιμοποιώ το KZread εντελώς τυχαία, για να δω βίντεο γραμματικής σουηδικών. Ξαφνικά μου έβγαλε και το δικό σου 😊 μπράβο σου ❤
