Wife and I recently retired. Bought a place with some oak trees and are new to wood burning. I’ve learned more about cutting, stacking, drying etc from you than anyone else. As for 5:30 am, did that for 42 years; start without me.

I have a wood burning heater in my basement and any larger wood I get, I use my electric Harbor Freight 6 ton electric wood splitter to break down. Living in the southern USA I only burn 2 cords a year, and I scrounge my wood, having no regular supplier. Also cut some of my own, but as I get older I appreciate already cut, and basically split wood and pay a bit more to get it. The reason I like it small is because my wife often builds the fire and tends it during the day. I keep a few larger overnighter pieces for me to add late at night so we have starter coals the next morning. Been doing this now for over 30 years! HA HA

Good Morning. Prior to the long and lean green machine, my axe resplits were done with the 5 ton electric splitter. Bill caught me using my chin and 'the girls' holding the woid in the tray. My hands were holding down a safety and the ram control. He worked his magic and he wired a hands free for control. I also had The NC Annex pick up a . pre paid unit at his local hardware store.. I am having a local fab shop make a slip over wedge with a very slim knife for residential pizza ovens, smokers and BbQ Hope you had fun by Ken.

I recently bought one of those little electric splitters (different brand but they all look the same) so my wife could help with the splitting (I've tried and tried to teach her to use the axe but, alas, no luck). It's great for small stuff and resplitting. She doesn't have to fiddle with a small gas engine or hearing protection.

Chris - That’s the same splitter I have that I’ve mentioned to you before. It’s not real fast and with a little bit of rigging with a clamp and foot pedal I’m able to have a “free hand”to guide the wood onto the splitting edge. It’s able to handle up to 12”-14” wide pieces of wood, so it’s worked out great for me to split $4000.- worth of bucked tree service wood that was done in my yard for my personal use . Whatever works right …? Thnx…

I see you use chains for logging , they work OK , but wire rope and chokers work better . I use both but I find the wire rope is easier to use and doesn’t come unhooked as easily . Just a observation from a west coaster . 👍🇨🇦

Merry Xmas. Question, why do you load wood by hand when you have equipment which could do it faster?

Could you filter out the unwantables during the splitting / staking / storing process? At some point your back is going to go ouchie-wah-wah!

@@johncoukos6373 I hand load onto an elevator that dumps the splits into my trailer. My back is still toast. I also have equipment that would load but I like clean splits.

I haul my kioti 3 hours north all the time here in Maine, i have a 2015 tundra and it hauls it no problem. Would it be better with a 3/4 ton? Probably. But are those as reliable as a toyota? Not even close!! 😅

I could never decide which was worse the springy limbed Spruce or the Balsam pitch on everything gluing gloves to saw handles and pants that would stand up on their own, limb gates were great before the delimbers came about.@@InTheWoodyard
