My Journey into VR Gamedev (ft. Godot 4)
Ғылым және технология
I got into VR through somewhat unconventional means. After thousands of hours of experience in playing VR games, I decided to finally jump into VR game development with Godot 4 since they just recently added official XR support.

I just found out about Blockbench, so I'll probably be trying that instead of Blender soon. Texturing is quite tedious in Blender.

Can you make a new tutorial with all advanced topics like raycasting, graphics, etc into one video and start from basic?Do you have any paid courses?

It is kind of tedious but I actually kind of prefer Blender since is a tool I've used before. I'm currently using it for this exact same style, you just gotta get a hang of it. Plus, I think that getting experience in a more specialized software such as Blockbench could be less attractive for a portfolio compared to expercience in a more widely used tool such as Blender.

I'm really looking forward to your VR journey o/ Awesome video as always
Wow cool stuff i think the pixel art goes really nicely in vr!
I am really impressed by your work !!! keep it up 👍👍👍
jeez! it's amazing what you're capable of doing!
I swear I just get more impressed everytime you do something new
You're awesome. Great work and thanks for sharing your experience.
Instant sub. I just finished the video and it was so informative and entertaining.
Love your content!
Good luck! Thank you for sharing!
So cool! So fun! Can't wait to see more!
very cool the video of the game at the end, good job
let's go Godot
amazing work bro
Kinda cool, just crazy that you even tried to do a game in the first place, the mentality that something you do is worth something (didn't hit me yet, and I am doing creative work etc.)
Blenders definitely an entanglement, especially for low poly models. But the pixelate and scale nodes in the composition editor make it really useful to get a ps1 inspired effect on your models. Usually I go with 0.250 to render the model, and 4.00 for the display in the scale nodes.
damn this looks sick
Yes finally. That is the same thing I want to do currently.
As someone who started in pygame and has begun working in godot 4 this is really cool to see! If you happen to make any 2d games I would be really interested in seeing your experience and how you transition from pygame to godot. Seeing your adaptability to VR is really making me want to get into 3D stuff now though. Great video!

From what I understand, the main difference is just that texturing is more tedious in Blender. I don't think it's hard to make something look the same.

Hey there! How did you advertise your game on steam to get that many sales? I have a game I’m developing and my biggest weakness is definitely the sales/business aspect. Thanks for the great video!

Something I see developers at my studio doing is they'll invert the view controls in dev and where the headset on their head backwards. SO you can keep it on and move your head around but you don't need to look through it

I guess that helps with the screen problem, but it's still a weight on your head.
Are you using gdscript? I'm starting out and I'm leaning on learning gd script instead of c# to simplify things. What would you recomend?

HAHAHAH. I love how you test your game.
I would really love to get both into Godot and VR game dev. Would it be possible that you share the source file and project files from your game once you are done? Or some part of it. Of course only if you dont intend to sell it and only do it for the competition

I can see a lot of Cave Story influence in your games in general, actually
FWIW I also develop with a 1060 6gb and honestly a standalone native build for the quest 2 outperforms my PC (in everything except post processing)! I regularly hit 120hz as long as I keep the lighting simple/postfx off. My PC struggles to hit 120hz, no matter what the shader complexity 😭

Okay, about elephant in the room, will the new Mojo programming language that is built on top of Python, to fix the "slow" problems once and for all... the fist language that allows users to name their files with Emojis as an file extension. Will this language take off? Push Python games to main stream for indie developers???
8:00 at least in Unity they actually do this in an official VR tutorial to animate a trigger.
Nothing like Potato literally using Pokemon God to help him test VR games lol.

Would it be easier to make a game for 2D and then adapting it for VR or not at all ?
@DaFluffyPotato
2 ай бұрын
Proper 2D is completely different. If you meant 3D, but on a 2D display rather than VR, it can be done. Games like No Man's Sky have ported successfully to VR, but typically games made intentionally for VR are better experiences.

This is very impressive. Though you should play Half-Life Alyx even if you are not a half-life guy. Maybe it'll give you some ideas for your VR game. Listen to the Half-Life Alyx developer commentaries too, they gave some solid advice for VR development.

I played it when it came out. It was great.
You should consider porting your 2d games to mobile for extra monies. Other than that, yea, I too felt like the people saying VR dev is much harder than regular development were just not good enough as developers for it to be easy. Just like anything in life, you gotta get really really good at something for it to be easy.
1:44 well frick how do you do that? A game that makes money made in a month?
Is you come from Python and want to use a game engine, Godot is the go to. It's powerfull and easy to use. Most likely you are never going to be using Unity's and Unreal's most advanced features, so Godot is very good
Could you make a video on how to make money with programming skills? I live in a shitty third world south American country, and I just wanted to have a better life. I tried everything possible, like freelancing, linkedin, sending my resume to jobs. None of this worked
9:35 no in the future so now theres quest 3
