Great work. Since Newtonian Telescopes are so cheap now, I am going to try to take a Dobson and put drivers & sensors on it tied to a microcomputer. Did that in my days as a graduate student using C++ equatorial telescopes in outreach on Kitt peak NOAO.

Hi. Now I would do it in a different way. Look please at my last video and consider the OnStep. In opposition to the AstroEQ, the OnStep allows to motorize the Alt-Az mounts. It works well with the Astroberry/StellarMate and KStars+Ekos.

Nice to read that you like my work. But please be aware that I met trouble right now unable to pass through. I can not perform pictures with exposure longer then 10 seconds and I don't know where is its source. I decided to build big EQ fork mount and will not develop the Dobsonian mount. The problem appears with astrophotography, otherwise it works perfectly!

@@astrovroobel I am new this astrophotography. I read that only in equatorial mounts u can track stars. Mounts I will work on equatorial not in dobsonion. I will follow your steps for goto arrangements. It's very good info. Thanks a lot.

Not so good

I've been thinking about building a mount for a tracking application and one thing that occurred to me is that I could use one of those simple dog tie-out stakes that you screw into the soil to anchor the center of the mount. If you adapted it to the mount with some type of boss or lever or screw plate you could even use it to provide probably 100kg or more of preload onto the mount legs to really stiffen everything up. This would help keep the mount steady as the scope slews around and when people walk nearby.

awesome project i bet if you stack loads of your pictures you wil get crazy cool results greetings from a fellow sky gazer whos currently building his own digital telescope from the start mine is fully pi based with a pi 4 and the pi hd cam running astroberry on the pi board so i basically have got a 24 cm mirror reflector telescope on the way to opensource greatness i wanted to thank you to pointing me to the so called " wimmers table " gonna integrate that into my project in all a great video you made of your project

Super! Polecam. Ale proszę wziąć pod uwagę gotowy system, jakim jest OnStep. W przeciwieństwie do AstroEQ, OnStep działa również z montażami Alt-Az. Zdecydowanie nie polecam pisania programu, bo to zmarnowany czas (i praktycznie brak kompatybilności). Mądrzy ludzie zrobili to już za nas. Niestety, doświadczenie to taka wiedza, którą się zdobywa zaraz potem, jak się jej potrzebuje...

Hi Tomasz, I liked your DIY solution for the go-to system on your telescope a lot. Congratulations! I am a radio astronomer and planning to make a small radio telescope as being a prototype for a bigger one in future. I also want to make a goto system for it. I would be grateful to utilize your experiences. If it's possible, I also would like to check your codes. I believe that your files would help me a lot. Radio Astronomy seems cool, im planning to try that for a year or two, but i didn't take the time yet.

I have the same telescope and thought about making a goto for it Since I found this video do you have any advice or maybe even a parts list assembly plan you could link here? Or are the other 3 videos you made all i need? And because the video is a bit older, what would you do different if you had to build it again?

excellent. I was wondering the other day [if budget wasn't an issue] how hard would it be to make an astronomy 'gyro chair' with integrated dobsonian telescope. With hand controls on armrests like those motorised wheelchairs to control aim. Anyone ever heard of something like that?

:D To be honest, I just finished my own field derotator, so I am able, but I have to little bit improve tracking of the drives. The general test using laser pointed on star is not enough for astro-photography. I've took some pictures and they are good, but I'm not satisfied. I always strive for perfection. Be patient...:) Thanks for your comment. ;)

Hej, mam pytanko :D dlaczego ustawianie teleskopu (albo przynajmniej mi się wydaje że właśnie to to) trwa tak długo, że wymaga przyspieszenia filmu? Chodzi konkretnie o ten moment, w którym silnik brzmi jak syrena alarmowa XD stawiam swoje pierwsze kroki w astroobserwacjach dopiero, więc przeprzaszam za brak wiedzy w tym temacie :D

Przepraszam, umknął mi ten post. Silniki krokowe pracują w trybie pełnych kroków i mikrokroków. Kroki pełne są najzwyczajniej zbyt głośne, kiedy w grę wchodzą takie rezonujące elementy jak pusta tuba Newtona. Dlatego trzeba iść na kompromis i ustalić jakis tryb mikrokroków. Im więcej mikrokroków natomiast, tym wolniej, ale za to ciszej. Nie bardzo chciało mi się czekać kilka minut na zmianę pozycji i zostałem przy około 100 sekundach na 180 stopni, czyli dokładnie przeciwny punkt na horyzoncie. Tymczasem najgłośniejszy jest napęd w osi Alt, ponieważ Az napędza montaż Dobsona, który jest wykonany z płyty wiórowej, a Alt przenosi swe drgania praktycznie wprost na OTA, co z kolei dźwięczy jak dzwon. Mam nadzieję, że o to chodziło w pytaniu. Pozdrawiam

Hej. Radzę zwolnić i ostudzić zapał. Nie udało mi się wyeliminować losowych ruchów w mikroskali. W wizualu jest po prostu bajka, GoTo jest naprawdę fajne, ale długoczasowąa astrofotografia ujawnia mikroruchy dające w efekcie naświetlenia "robaczki" i "motylki" zamiast punktowych gelwiazd. Obecnie pracuje nad dużym montażem widłowym w oparciu o super precyzyjną przekładnię falową. Daje sobie jeszcze rok...

Hej. Sorki za późną odpowiedż. Do Pythona jest biblioteka PyEphem (rhodesmill.org/pyephem/), z niej korzystałem. Ale teraz robi to za mnie Asatroberry, KStars+Ekos i OnStep.

Would you consider making a bathinov mask for my telescope, i have a !6" goto skywatcher dob that i cant find anywhere that sells them that large, love your leveling platform takes me forever with shims and wood blocks to get my base leveled most nights

There is a site (can't remember the name right now) where you can input the measures of your telescope and it will give you a template for the bathinov mask you need, then you can have it laser cut on some black plastic or do as I did with a cardboard frame and for the mask itself I used some opaque curtain material

what steppers are you using they sound really loud . loud most of the time equals bad. seems very jerky as well . it could be alot smoother than this

Simply: basic ones. Don't worry, next steppers will be higher quality. I mean steppers for next mount that I begin to build: a big fork mount with wedge equipped with a harmonic drive.

​@@astrovroobel It may not so much be the stepper motors themselves but the motor drivers. Are you using simple "full-step" drivers? If so, you may want to consider drivers that support microstepping like Trinamic or STM's STSpin.

Presently there are LV8729 drivers in micro steps mode.

Amazing project, congratulations!!!!!. I made a similar project for a equatorial mount but in C++. I use Stellarium for searching objects. I noticed the sound of your stepper motors. Is the same sound of my motors. One doubt resolved. Thank you.

@@astrovroobel One question. Which is the driver you use for the steppers? I use a4988 conected to a nema17 motor. I have heard that "Vref" could be a little higher to avoid the "clac" noise of the motor when is searching

After playing with different cheap drivers I decided to go into LV8729, they are fantastic! You can try also TMCxxxx series, but I didn't do it, so can not advise.

@@astrovroobel I have not experimented with driven telescope mounts yet, but I have experience with stepper drivers in 3D printers. I replaced the A4988 based drivers in mine with TMC2130 drivers and the stepper noise went from "moderately loud" to "nearly silent" when using the StealthChop mode. Definitely consider using the Trinamics drivers if the stepper noise is annoying to you; you might also find you get slightly smoother motor drive (meaning less vibration conveyed into the scope) since the StealthChop mode effectively drives the steppers with a more ideal sinusoidal waveform.

@@astrovroobel Hi, Do you use the VSOP theory in your code in order to find and follow the planets using your Goto system ? If your project is finished then it is maybe too late for the tip, but i recommend you to get "Astronomical Algorithms" from Jean Meeus.

​@@ggldmrd5583 My answer is not short :) Yes, I use some equation from the fantastic "Astronomical Algorithms" book - some basic and some more complicated, like transformation of Ra and Dec to Az and Alt. I was also using his data tables to calculate current position of Sun and Moon. But I got some advise and presently use very good Python module: PyEphem, which gives me positions of Sun, Moon, all planets and also comets and satellites. It's very impressive. Finally I still use equations given by Jean Meeus for calculation of position of objects having static Ra and Dec, everytning else is maintained by PyEphem.

@@astrovroobel Yh I tried PyEphem long ago, this is a good python module, but i personally prefere to make my own functions because it's more fun and i exactly know how it works. It allows me to modify the equations to improve some functions. The demonstrations of the formulae are very interressting btw.

If you go to his list of videos there is an 18 minute video on how he motorized it. He also has a second video, "the reconstruction" where he updates the design to use worm gears for smoother movement.
