Hi Tony, an occasional female lurker here! I am 76 and had an ileostomy (colon and rectum removed) when I was 21 so I have lived most of my life with a bag on my stomach. And modern surgery has improved so much since those days:) Once over the initial op I have done everything I wanted to do in life. Although it was a shock actually it made my life so much easier because all my childhood and teenage years was a misery with needing the loo all the time, having 'accidents' in public and never being able to rely on going out and enjoying myself. I am really sorry you are facing this but it does not feel like such a big thing when you are on the other side of it!! I have looked after myself, eaten sensibly and am healthier than most people my age and still going very strong. Facing something so difficult so young meant that I grabbed life by the scruff of the neck and took risks and had adventures. Went to China and Tibet and a tour of Japan just before lockdown. Went to the Antarctic, made cement with no mixer just my own muscles, installed drains, gardened, rode horses, mucked out stables, snowmobiled in the Arctic and did physical games with the family. Once over this blip I am sure life will be even sweeter for you than it was before. Best of luck and kudos for sharing such a difficult subject. Sending you positive waves and very best wishes. 💅

I'm not sure if you realise this Tony, but this video will help countless people. It sounds like you have a decent support network, with that and your wonderful positive attitude, you'll get through this. It's a tremendously life-changing procedure, but we all know you'll be ok. Tony I'm awful sorry to hear about this. My friend was diagnosed with bladder cancer in her very early 40s. She had the radical bladder removal with urostomy. It was definitely a learning curve to get to grips with the bag but for what it's worth she said that when she got her urostomy she finally got a full night of sleep. She had never in her life slept through for getting up and down with urinary frequency. She is now 5 years cancer free and is an active member of the emergency services. I'm wishing you all the best in your treatment and hope you can get as much time in your gardens as possible (gently does it). All the best to all your family too, from Scotland.

High Tony, sorry to hear your problem. I'm going through a similar , 2 months ago had a 4 hour opp for back door problem and about to start 4 months chemotherapy. Try to stay positive for your wife and children, they also find it hard to deal with. All the best, cant wait to see you back at the allotment

Tony & Melanie; I’m virtually a neighbour in South Shields… I know we are strangers atm but I am literally here if you need anything. Tony has inspired me with his allotment and I’ve tried to improve mine tenfold 🤣 however; hearing what you as a family have had to deal with recently then knowing Tony won’t be 100% until his stoma is fully functional. I can water; weed and generally keep his allotment tidy(until Tony is up to it again)… please just know this is a very genuine offer and if I can help I will 🥰

Having got to the end of the video your having a catheter inserted to help pass urine. You will get used to it but it will be uncomfortable at first. Feel free to message and I’ll help. Will look forward to any videos you put out and like many others; I’ll be patient until the next ❤️

Ps - life is fine with urostomy - different but ok Remember - i was stage 4 and its all gone and im free of it - dont despair , its very do able

My friend has a bag and it’s been years since he had it set-up and he’s living a full life, as he says “it takes a full day of drinking in the pub to fill it up”. Keep smiling lad. ❤

I think everyone who follows you Tony whether we comment or not, has cried and laughed with you listening to what you are going through. Laughed about the cookies 😂. As Audrey said, Steve, God Bless, had a very aggressive type. I know lots of people with stomas, it takes a little time to get used to dealing with it and you will have your highs and lows, but, you will get through this. You have a loving family who will help you get through. The rest of us are praying and willing you on. All the best to you and yours mate. Stay positive 👍🙏

He is such an active man so once you're over the surgery you will be able to do what you love again. He is now 73 so stay positive and when you need support we will all be here for you. Sorry to hear about your health issues Tony. My father in law had the same diagnosis - that was about 6 years ago. After the initial recovery he's been his old self ever since. You'll get through this, I have no doubt, and come out the other side stronger for it. All the very best - don't forget you have the support of everyone here.

You have my respect Tony for doing this video. I have just gone through something similar. In Jan 2020 I had a MRI just to check why I needed a hearing aid in my left ear. Like you thought nothing of it. Last year I felt my hearing in that ear had deteriorated so went for another hearing test. To cut a long story short I had got lost in the system turns out the hearing was caused by a blockage which was a brain tumour that had grown from the size of a small peanut to golf ball size therefore it had to come out during a 12 hr operation back in February. I can’t give my allotment Garden enough credit in helping my recovery 6 months down the line

Everyday you are one of the people who put a smile on my face & cheer me up. Take time to have ur treatments and heal. Oh no, Tony. I'm same age as you. I went through all the tests for Lung Cancer at 49. I was devastated, it was like being given a death sentence. 6 months of tests and I cried everyday. So I know how you feel. Luckily I got the all clear for the big C, but honestly, I've turned into a bit of a health freak now. I stopped smoking, stopped drinking, no junk food. Hope you get the all clear, get your head into clean living and no more poisons. Sending best wishes 😊

I've never commented on your videos before, but I've been a sub for about 2 years, really enjoy your content! I just wanted to say, a positive mental attitude goes a long way. My family have been through and are going through an extremely tough time at the moment. My brother who was 29 at the time of diagnosis, was diagnosed with stage 4 b cell lymphoma, one of the most, if not the most, aggressive types of lymphoma. He went through 8 months of the strongest chemo, which included a spinal dose, had to have countless bags of blood and platelets. Throughout all of it you couldn't knock the fight out of him. He beat the hell out of it that time round and the pet scan showed he had no active lymphoma. A few months later he went for his pet scan and it showed a small spot in his chest, so more chemo. He was doing well, the next scan was even more encouraging, but then he had the worst luck. It came back in his brain cavity, which it had a 1% chance of doing and it made him extremely poorly, he lost his vision in on eye, couldn't eat because it made him choke or walk properly because he was so weak and dizzy. He was rushed to hospital for treatment, to be given the worst news that he can't be cured and that the best option was probably to go home (80 miles away), but the other option was the strongest radiotherapy which might have made his symptoms worse. He chose to have the radiotherapy, fought for his life and against all the odds, his symptoms improved, he's now in a decent place he's receiving blood transfusions and platelets every week as a result of the radiotherapy, but his body is now starting to make its own finally. He knows he can't be cured and we don't know how long he has, but he's been so positive through it all and it's got him through the fight 💪. Sorry for the wall of text but I just wanted to share his story, the fight is hard, but keep the positivity and it will get you through the worst of times. Good luck Tony! Keep strong! 💪💪

There are always options. I have been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, I have mets in my spine and brain, I have been told palliative care I am over a year in and living life to the full with baking and gardening and going on travel adventures. Don't put too much emphasis on palliative care they are only looking at the symptoms at that moment. You are positive so keep hold of that you'll get there. I'm there with you. Keep going with your blogs and be happy.

Tony, while it seems strange at first talking it through to your viewers can be such a cathartic release of emotion; it allows you to vocalise your feelings and by recounting the story it gives you the chance to make sense of it all. As we get older unfortunately the big C is something that we have to contend with and we have to be vigilant. I recently had to have a melanoma removed from the back of my leg and the delay between getting it cut out and being given the results and likely hood of it having spread was horrendous. Thankfully it was localised; serves me right being a fair skinned Englishman in Australia! Thank you for sharing. If this video makes one stubborn 'older person' get a checkup then this video will have done some good.

Tony, really sorry that you are going through this, but what a beautiful, open & heartfelt video, you had me laughing but with tears in my eyes. 😂 We had a similar trauma last year when my husband was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, but sadly it had spread. He is a mountaineer, so after all his treatment this diagnosis was not going to stop him doing what he loves, & I’m sure when you have recovered from your operation it will be gardening & the allotment that will keep you going. Totally empathetic and sympathetic. Haven't forgotten a terror period of my own, many years ago when during a routine exam I heard, "Ah...something suspicious, here, we'll just take a biopsy *right away,*" which did nothing for my peace of mind. When those results came back, everything was all right but until they did I was either numb and mindless or reduced to a quaking mass of terrified jelly. More recently, an actual cancer. Removed surgically, but now of course the monitoring. It's all going to come right for you. All of us here send our love and prayers and positive, healing thoughts. All the best to you.

Tony I sat hear watching you in this video with tear's rolling down my face. I feel so sorry for you. My wife was diagnosed with ling cancer in April and also had to have one of those Pet scans. The cancer was in her left upper lung. Like you our whole life came crashing down on us. The surgeon told us he was going to remove half of the upper lung as Radio therapy wouldn't work. She had surgery on the 19th June. Five and a half hour's in surgery and three day's in intensive. Thankfully the cancer hadn't spread. She goes to see the surgeon on the 9th of this month (Aug) for the result's. The care she had from everyone concerned was magnificent and the after care to. We wish you the very best Tony and pray for you and your family.

Hey Tony, I am so glad you shared this. Sometimes we sit in silence and stew over all the bad possibilities and dwell in all the negative aspects can be so torturous to ourselves. When we share and talk with folks we have the possibilities of hearing positive thoughts and ideas. Just know there is unlimited support for you here. Well wishes and prayers. I am 36 but was initially diagnosed with colon cancer back in 2010. I was able to go into remission in 2012 but it came back as Stage IV in 2014 and I’ve been fighting it ever since. That means almost 10 years of fighting Stage IV cancer. There IS life after diagnosis. I work in my garden, albeit in an altered capacity, and it is still my happy place. Also, my uncle recently had a similar experience to you and he is now cancer free. I’ll be sending good vibes (and prayers, if you’d like them) all the way from the mountains of Virginia in the US. *Pro Tip: most doctors, at least in the States, will prescribe you an anti anxiety med to take before scans if you have claustrophobia or even just anxiety. ASK FOR THEM AND TAKE THEM!

Thank you for sharing your ordeal with us Tony. Your experience will resonate with quite a few of us. I was suffering chronic fatigue and was diagnosed with needing a triple heart bypass surgery. I visited many of the dark places that you have. But 6 years later I am still here, looking after our smallholding caring for sheep, goats, poultry, polytunnels and No dig beds. Not bad for a 72 year old! I am sure you will adapt to wearing a bag. Just think you can easily empty it on the compost heap and maybe match that Charlie Dowding fellas compost temperatures!

There's nothing like a cancer diagnosis to put everything into perspective, that limbo time when there's nothing but testing and uncertainty is the worst part and feels like it goes on forever , once you get a plan of action you can start feeling better, you know what needs to be done and you just want to get on and do it. Always try to see yourself on the other side of it, life going on, I don't need to remind you what a wonderful gift life is because I'm sure that you already have a whole new appreciation of it! you'll be back doing what you like up your allotment again, a lot is having the right attitude which you've definitely got! I'm 5 years clear of cervical cancer but i know a lot of how you were feeling during all the testing and waiting and thats huge! everything that happens now is moving you forward and will be progress, you'll get where you need to be! My very best wishes to you!

WOW, mate. So sorry to hear this. What a mind fuck to deal with this 2 days after Steve's Funeral. I'm so happy it didn't spread, and they can handle it. You're worrying about the garden, but we are approaching the season's end. I've hardly been at mine this year. It will still be here when you have recovered. But don't push it, mate. It's not worth the risk for a few vegetables. I know it doesn't feel like it, but amazingly, it's not spread, and you don't have to deal with a terminal diagnosis. If there is anything I can help with, just yell, pal; more than happy to lend a hand.

I am going through similar health issues and have been in pain since January. My prayers are with you Tony. It's difficult and at times feels as if our journey is a solitary one. By doing that, you help the rest of us if we ever go through the same thing, and you open up the whole spectrum of emotions that one goes through when we hear the word cancer. There is so much help today, but getting through it all is so hard, and now we have your video to help us all. Thank you for being so honest about it all. I do believe people will help take care of your garden and I understand your concern about its care. You are one brave guy to have shared it all. My dad is currently going through this, they removed a lump and they discovered a 2nd type of cancer that is like a second skin in his bladder... he is currently having BCG flushes every week. Its a road we are all travelling with him. Stay strong 💪

Having had a bag for a few months all I can say is how much freedom it gave me. Yes you get an extra large bag on a stand for night time. Its great for getting a full nights sleep with no worries, Ive got to say that was a very hard watch but I am glad I watched it all the way through. I hope you make a fast recovery the garden will be there waiting for you once your fit. All best Tony.

Sorry to hear about you're health problems Tony, I wish you all the luck in the world mate. Well done for sharing this with the you tube community. Had prostate problems myself a few years back and believe me I was craping myself ,luckily I was all clear. Men need to keep a close eye on all the water works stuff. Don't be afraid to go to the doctor. This video will help encourage guys to do that Tony . All the best mate.

Well done for sharing Tony. That must have been so hard to do! Brave man! At the age of 15, my son had to have a stoma bag due to ulcerative colitis. It has been amazing for him. At 22, he has now achieved so much. It gave him his life back again. Good luck with the operation Tony. You'll be back in your garden, walking the dogs and enjoying the great outdoors again in no time. You will be able to carry on living your life! Life is for living! Take good care.❤

My friend was 22 when she had a stoma for her bowel fitted she is now about to have her first baby in a few days and she said it’s the best thing she ever had done as it got to the point where she couldn’t go anywhere and the pain she was in just took over her life so it’s a big change but the best thing you will be here and still trying to grow your carrots ! You got this you are important and strong x

Tony, Tony, Tony talk about hell and back. What an horrific time you’ve had in the last few months. No wonder Potty mouth has been on hold. All of your time, head space and energy has gone to the allotment. Bless you. But!!! It hasn’t spread..🎉🎉also I’m so glad the talk of having permission to have a good fart made you smile in the midst of recalling it all today. 💨💨💨So proud of you for telling us about this…as someone else said …it will help so many going through similar…you’re an angel of the North me laddie.. The allotment will survive. Just an idea! You could FaceTime the family members who go to your allotment for you and give them instructions from your bedside, of what needs to be done and how Tony and these could perhaps be your future vids. 😅If you wanted the distraction. Obviously the most important thing is that you and your family/friends recover, get well/fit and come back to us all. But if you’re going stir crazy this is always an option. Ps I see that 14 yr old laddie in you during every blog. Take care my darling and to you and yours, take good care, look after yourself ❤xxx
