What Seeds To Plant In July For Fall Harvest (zone 4,5,6,7)

Honestly the "Fall Garden" is my favorite of all!!... Here in Zone 5/6 we are planting all these things during July to ensure we have such an amazing harvest time in the fall. This timing will work for Zones 4-7 at least.

Doing this right now literally! Got a consultation from Nate, and following it thoroughly! Made some beds here, got my Yukon gold Ruth stout bed in and potato’s chitting now, and also Im making the beds for the fall garden now! I actually forgot I have like 100 1/2 gallon pots just like the ones Nate showed the Bootstrap Farmer on ones! I see why because the fall garden plants literally sprouted and just died after trying to start them in the 72 cell trays and I could never figure out why, I even hit them with compost tea and fertilizer after hardening off and planting. I got like 2 broccoli out of it.. just trash. Threw it out and started over after planning everything out first and following the plan Nate gave me and I feel so much better about everything. Got my seeds ready to start and beds ready to go after today!

For what it’s worth, I have seen other people using pex for their hoops instead of pvc. One major advantage of the pex is that it can be bought in rolls and cut to fit, and the bulk purchase of pex is much more cost effective than the individual lengths of pvc.

I would use PEX for smaller "season extending" hoop houses that are very low to the ground but for this application the PEX just isn't rigid enough for what I need... if you have structures built of PEX I would love to see some pictures if you want to post them to the Discord chat plz!!

25 years experience here growing in southern Oregon, zone 8b. Guage your weather, folks, before proceeding. We are experiencing 100-110+ degree temps with a UV index of about 10. We are also experiencing wildfire smoke from a nearby Forest fire. Take your conditions into account before starting seeds. In my case I started cabbages and broccoli for fall around the solstice time and I have them in FULL shade and I water them two or three times a day. They would be dead if I put them in the type of shade structure you recommend. Once this heat breaks, I hope in about a week or so, I will start the rest of my crops for fall. Since I am in zone 8B I have more time than you do before hard frosts arrive. Anyway, what I am getting at is you can only speak to your own experience but it definitely depends on where you are as to what actions you take for your Fall Garden. Charles Dowding in the UK has a greenhouse full of starts right now he can just pop in anywhere, anytime. I wish! My greenhouse is probably 150° during the days so that's not happening 😂

Thanks Nate, I've been using a few strips of wood as an adge with an old caravan window on top of it to grow carrots, it keeps those pesky slugs out and helps to keep them warm as it's about 50 degrees or so every day here, its working really well, you need to adapt and overcome in the PSG as space isn't a thing, I'm going to do the same for beetroot for a winter harvest, everything else is just struggling along due to the lack of heat here. Hopefully solar cycle 25 starts to change things soon.

For my "pots" I use the Solo Cups you buy from Costco (Kirkland Signature Chinet 18 oz Plastic Cup, Red, 240-count - ~$14) and use a normal pair of scissors to cut two holes on the bottom of each cup. I then purchase the Round Pot Carrying Trays from the Greenhouse Megastore (holds (15) 4.5 in. pots) to keep the cups together and upright for easier transport. There's a couple of advantages of this system...the cups last me at least 7 years and they hold enough soil where I am not really time dependent on getting the plants into the ground in a certain week. The soil doesn't dry out as fast either since there's more soil for each plant.

I drill through the bottoms in stacks. Makes quick work of making holes. Leave some un-drilled for bottom watering, or use aluminum buffet pans to hold multiple cups and bottom water. Use 240ml clear cups as humidity domes. I use them for direct sowing too, especially if I have to work and I'm concerned about the soil drying out. Still using the same cups from 5yrs ago.

S.E. Louisiana, zone 9b. I just planted pumpkins in a bed with corn stalks that I just harvested the ears from. The plants are still green and I’m hoping they will shade the seedlings. I’m direct sowing everything. Only adding microbes after extreme rain or something that may have killed microbes in the soil. I try to keep the soil biology healthy. If I think I need to add microbes, I apply leaf mold extract with a bit of molasses. JLF for N, wood ash for potassium, compost extract for everything else. I’ve been mulching weekly with grass clippings. I don’t fully understand the concept of aerated tea. Breed a bunch of microbes and let them die in the soil. Why not feed the soil so they continue to thrive there?

Thank you for the video! Just a question, is there any way to get some greens like lettuce, kale in winter with a cold frame or a tunnel with frost blanket? I'm in the same zone and I'm so sick of buying gross produce in the winter. What are my options for all year greens, if there is any?

I tried this but I think you would need some supplemental lighting in the hoop house to get enough light for good growth. I didn't want to deal with that, so last winter, I grew sprouts, microgreens, and container lettuce inside. It was wonderful having these fresh grown things in the winter. I will be doing this again this winter.

there is a way yes but its involved and doesn't produce nearly enough for the work input in my experience.... the best thing for the winter is focusing on growing sprouts and micro greens indoors in a small grow tent and you will get super tasty nutrient dense food with very little hassle and cost

Thanks! Nate, we've had some big issues with our beans. A kind of rust or blight. My question is how often can you use the JS? Weekly? Here in N. Texas we've had a very humid spring/summer. The diseases got away from me because I was uncertain how often I could use JS before any deleterious effects occur from it. As usual your efforts are appreciated.

Bean rust can be difficult to control and once they are infected there really is only management and not so much a cure... its from the exceptionally hot and humid weather thats allowed it to get out of control... the JS is to be used in a rapid 3 day pattern where you use it every evening for 3 days then lay off to see the effects... but in that time I would give it ACT as often as you can... be sure to coat the entire leaf surface with the tea and soak the soil as well... thank you for the contribution my friend!

Just the video I need today. The garlic is out, now what? I have kale babies started for a succession, a new bowl of arugula, some tops from Egyptian walking onions. Adding some more bush beans. I was wondering what else might still make it.. I love that you have Glory of Enkhuizen in there. This is one seed that I bought because I could not resist the name. Though I would not have recognized the name from your pronunciation, :).
