Mine doesn't even show up on disk management. Also, every minute or so it makes a weird tick noise. Not a continuous clicking noise. Help! With mine when I plug it in once out of every 20 times it shows up. Once i do click on it and try to remove files to my laptop it freezes.

You are a life saver. Your instructions worked perfectly. I bought a new 4 TB Seagate that would not show up. I tried everything but couldn't get my computer to recognize it. I followed what you said and my computer now sees 1/2 of my drive. I see that for whatever reason, it partitioned my external drive. I assigned a name for the first half and I will name the second half when I need to. Thank you again.

This ended up not fixing the issue I was having - I too found an old WD drive which seemed to work but didn't install drivers right, and I can't find that driver anywhere - but I just wanted to write you and say I appreciated your matter-of-fact teaching method and how easy this video was to understand. I definitely learned a couple of things.

So, my problem is slightly different. My Passport WAS WORKING with my laptop, no problem and it continues to work on *other computers*. My Passport no longer shows up in Disk Manager and the "DISK PART: list disk" only shows my primary hard disk. In Device Manager, however, I do have an "Unknown USB Device" show up when I plug in this drive.

I want to add a further fix for those who can't find their HD in disk management. It took me four hours but I found a solution for my brand new wd 4tb hd which I couldn't get windows 7 to recognize. I downloaded wd drive utilities from their website and the hd was recognized inside the program. The tests didn't help or add information and I was about to give up. Restarting my computer did nothing but when I was safely ejecting the passport I accidently clicked on open drives and printers right above eject button and the HD was recognized there. Properties led me to realize the drive needed to be installed on my pc was missing from the hd. I used wd drive utilities on a hunch to erase all my hd's content, hoping the drive would surface as a natural program included with it, like reformating, and it worked. My HD works perfectly now. Please keep in mind mine was brand new and never dropped that I know of. I did get it on sale for $78 on Mercari so there's that but it was brand new, never used, and it was empty as I hadn't been able to get my pc to recognize it yet. Hopefully that's enough information to help someone, feel free to comment below if you have further questions.

Thank YOU! I have been researching for an hour trying to figure it out how to get it back to my PC. I have the WD external ultra passport and I can't believe how frustrating it has been since my purchased. The software backup sucks, relied on File History and it still does not back up everything, so I'm sticking with manual. Then this problem showed up and it's ridiculous what you have to do if you're not tech savvy. This device should be simple, especially in investing one of these. I read you can change the letter but I wasn't sure how to if I can't see it. Changing the drive letter worked for me! Thank you!

My Toshiba had a letter assigned to it (G), but still wasn't showing up in My Computer. I used your info on how to assign/change the letter. I renamed it "T" for....you guessed it....Toshiba. The computer gave me a warning message first saying some drives might not like being assigned a different letter. I did it anyway, (since I had the material backed up on another drive), and it works fine. Thanks for the well-explained video!

I don't know why they abandoned that and went this route instead. Thanks so much for this video.

I was so immensely frustrated with a drive a friend gave me (previously used on a Mac) and this fixed it! Thank you so so much!!!!! I appreciate the pace you used too. I'm pretty computer savvy but I appreciated that you checked often to make sure no one destroyed their OS in the process. :) I was able to follow along with the video and do the steps with you. One note, my disk was 3TB and I had to click the GPT option for it to work properly. The first time it made only 2TB of the drive usable, but I redid the process with that option and it worked. If you go into DISK MANAGEMENT and the disk is shaded black instead of blue 1)Right Click the black shaded area and select NEW SIMPLE VOLUME 2)Choose EXFAT to format if you want to store files larger than 4gb on your new disk 3)If you want to move this external HD between PC and Laptops, rename it to DRIVE x, y,z (your choice) It just stops conflicts if you have more than 2 drives on your PC and / or laptop

Thank you very much for a well done tutorial. I just received a new 1TB WD My Passport external drive and I did not see it listed. I knew there was a way to do this but I had forgotten how. You just made my day.

Excellent work. Many thanks. Note that one can just leave the Win7 Computer Management/DiskManagement window open, and after "clean" step, do Action/Refesh, then right-click on the Drive #, and do the Format then. Again: many thanks for recovering this drive to working order.

If your drive is spinning, but is still recognized in disk management the sata adapter may have gone bad just as mine did. I bought a new enclosure on amazon for $10 and now it works.

Just want to say thanks it seems the WD Elements drive is susceptible to losing its partition. It may be a few people are not disconnecting their drives properly from their PC's and Tvs without proper un mounting. Eject or power down don't just pull the usb plug this might be one of the things that happens. Thanks again tipps:) us newbies appreciate the clear instruction.

The lessened space is not due to any system files or any other data stored from beforehand. All storage devices manufacturing companies account for 1GB as 1 billion bytes. That is because they account for 1KB as 1000 Bytes whereas it should be 1024 Bytes as so on.This is done for convenience in calculations. Thus it adds up to create such a huge difference which we misconceive as a deduction in space.

Super stuff.. worked like a charm.. I just followed the steps as shown by you in this video and hurray.. my HD is back now.. thank you very much Just for others reference My HD was not detected by windows. I was able to see the HD under Disk Management and Device Manager. I used Easeus software to recover data before going ahead as this process will clean everything.

If you need to backup anything on the drive connect it to a chromebook if possible. Might work on linux as well but I couldn't tell you for sure. You could just run a VM with chromeOS and connect the drive to that.
