My Geocaching Kit

A look at my geocaching gear. It changes a little from time to time but the main parts are constant. We'll look at my "grab and go" basic kit which is suitable for urban caching or when caching from a vehicle. Then we move on to the contents of my hydration pack, this pack holds three litres of water and has 25 litres of storage area for gear. It is a small, light pack suitable for day use. It may be small, but I have a lot of gear stuffed into it.
Some of what I carry may seem excessive, and many geocachers would not routinely carry this much. The gear I carry reflects the environment I operate in. It also includes contingency items, if all goes well I will not need to use them. However if things go wrong I want to have this gear with me, it provides capabilites and options. It may seem a lot to take along, but it is not heavy and I prefer to be as self sufficient as possible. Plan for the best, prepare for the worst.
If you are wondering what this whole Geocaching thing is all about, check out the website. You'll probably find there are caches in your area. Give it a try, but be warned, it can be addictive!

Happy Geocaching :-)

    I've just watched this video for the 3rd or 4th time and I've come to the realisation that I've been humping too much gear. Your idea of a small pouch that you carry with you at all times when geocaching and then a second, larger pack for bush caches is terrific. I'm going to copy that. :) Cheers, b

    I have crepe bandages for that situation, but not the size you mention. They sould very good, it's just a matter of space in a first aid kit that is the issue. I could throw one in the pack seperate and that would be worthwhile. Thanks for the tip mate.

    Nice to see what others carry in there caching kit. Whilst I do carry a first aid kit another item I carry which I hope to never use are three wider and longer than average bandages for snake bite. I don't consider your average first aid kit bandages suitable. I picked them up for $10.00 (they came in a nice little handy bag) off of a guy that does snake awareness shows at the local shopping centres. But of course you can pick up similar at at any chemist.

    Just as well I'm a long way from Iowa I guess. I do not carry the fixed blade in an urban setting, only in the bush. Surely in your part of the world carry a tool such as this in the wilderness would be OK.

We also have a couple of Preons as well as a few more of 4/7s torches (good tip by the way with loosening off the end to stop wasting the batteries!). Oddly enough I'm going the other way a bit. After my recent adventure/misadventure more gear for the bush is the order of the day. This pack and load out is not good enough in the bush if things go wrong. I've got my new pack set up and ready to go. Just have to test it on a few hikes and then I'll do a video on it.

    I would like to put an end to this, it is getting silly. I am not "recommending" anything. I am simply showing what I carry. I stress again that I only take a knife such as this in a "wilderness" situation. There are two reasons, as mentioned I actually do have to cut through thick undergrowth quite often (lantana), also if I was to get stuck out overnight it would be very useful in fire making. Lets accept that our environments and needs are diiferent, as are our opinions, and move on. Thanks

  • @AussieMark909

    @AussieMark909

    All GPS devices display this, even the very basic ones. So I would expect the 600 series to be no different. On the Garmin 550 I have it is a matter of selecting which options you want displayed on the compass screen, one of which is lat and long. This is how I hide my caches.

    Not sure where you live so cannot comment on laws there. You should be able to research local laws online quite easily. However, you make the mistake in your original comment of seeing the knife as a weapon. It is a tool, that is why I carry it, and that is how it is used in the bush. I don't carry it in urban areas of course, there is no use for it there. My experience in the bush is that a machete or large survival type knife is very useful, for example when hacking a path through lantana.

    AussieMark909 Are there many Geocaching locations in QLD? I'm in Brisbane.. It sounds really awesome.. the only thing I find a bit scary.. would be set ups or being abducted or something happening to my girlfriend.. At least it's a reason to carry knives for survival purposes and that can double as protection.. I know that would almost never happen but it's still a slighttt risk surely.
