Technically, following the actual rules of the game, that's not how the spell works. Since depression is a state of being and not a command. But there's also the rule that literally any rule in the game can be overruled by the dungeon master, so if your dungeon master is cool with it and thinks it's fun, then yeah, it works. Which is THE greatest part of DnD imo. Sure, there are rules, but we're all just here to have fun, so don't let the rules get in the way of that

@@MrSuperTeenGohan If someone did that at my table, I would probably just point out it needs to be an order and proppose "depress" instead of "depression". I think it's good for novice players to be pointed out when they missunderstand some rule to help them get used to both reading and understanding what the rules say instead of getting used to do things ignoring the rules, but I also think it's even better to help them find the way to do what they want (or at least the closest thing to what they want) following the rules instead of just saying "no, this isn't how this works so it doesn't work". Either way is fine, if I wasn't DMing I would probably let it be since it isn't game breaking in any significant way, but I prefer to leave the "any rule can be overruled" thing for situations where the rules are unclear, when they are causing an argument or when someone tries to use a spell or skill for something that makes sense even though it's not specified in the rules of said spell or skill.

@@garethvila5108 I would personally also not really let it work this way in my own campaign, but I also recognise that I tend to be a party pooper with rules, so I try to be more lenient as long as it's enhancing the experience at the table and not breaking the game. In a campaign I wouldn't allow it, because it sets precedens for further into the campaign, but in a one-shot I'd point out that it's not how the spell would properly, but go with it because it's just a one-shot. As for turning depression into a command, I think I'd look for a better word than "depress", since that doesn't really (in my opinion) translate to "become depressed". It can just as easily be "cause depression". I'd probably go with the command "despair", as that (in my opinion) achieves a similar state, and is an action that inheritly must affect oneself. As for anyone else reading this, who thinks I'm taking the fun out of it by being technical and specific about this: this is part of what I personally find fun, and I only indulge because it seems people are willing to discuss the technicality. I still believe that the way to have fun is different from table to table

Fun fact my first session of dnd my character (a half elf if i remember correctly) just had a feeling from perception that people were watching us while we were in the woods, so i used a flaming arrow and shot the trees around us, and killed like all 8 or so vigilantes that were definitely going to attack us, everyone was actually really impressed cause as mentioned this was my first run, in fact our groups bard asked me if he could write a song for it, i said sure, and next session he actually came back with a lyrics sheet and his guitar and played us the song, he actually let me keep the paper too, it's still tucked away with my character sheet if i remember correctly

That 'casual conversation' with Paul was one of the most intense dnd background stories I've ever heard. And also a very believable motivation for striking up a conversation at a bar. Venting. I also love how he asked if she knew his boss before saying anything that could get him in trouble.

Paul easily won MVP in this adventure. Like seriously, saving tholomew (I think that's his name) from the clay crowns possession, communicating with the goblins, and is just an overall funny character. I'm actually a little sad for him bout his backstory, but yeah. 10/10 for Paul :D

Gotta love how high fantasy Jaiden and Ranboo went with their characters and Jacob just went, "Imma be Larry/a salary man"

DND interests me because I want to experience this but I am also incredibly uncreative and struggle with roleplaying (mostly if the character is especially different from myself)

this truly encapsulates the fun and chaos of dnd. i love how your DM managed to have everything wrap up nicely! one of the things our DM always does is gives the NPCs celebrity lookalikes so we got a quest from george clooney, stayed at a sketchy inn run by danny devito, found a zombie that looked like dehydrated adam driver, fought a sorcerer benedict cumberbatch… it makes going through my doodles of the campaign so much sillier

Zoot having the energy of a dog who likes simple things and answers is a entire mood And also the tattoo on the tongue for spells is AWESOME I wont lie it kinda reminded me of black butler- but I love Black Butler so complimentive / it isnt a frequently used design i see often . But it is odd it happened twice

With the opening of the quest starting with a sheep bursting into a tavern with a Scroll of Speak with Animals, I legitimately thought this was going to be them playing the one-shot adventure "The Wild Sheep Chase", one of my favorite one-shot adventures for parties that enjoy some chaos. Was surprised to see that didn't seem to be the case at all.

The opening and closing of this session makes it feel like this was based off “a wild sheep chase”. But only loosely

the fact that a dnd party exists with my childhood favorite animation channel, the streamer that i'd watch for hours daily during 2020-2021 lockdowns, the guy who did the improved romeo and juliet performance that i watch at least monthly, and the cohost of my current favorite podcast is a full circle moment that i wasn't expecting. like who would've thought that my favorite creators from such different parts of my life would somehow all be friends with each other

If I am not wrong Zuut's main motivation to go at said adventure is because they don't wanna go in a doctor school which makes it even better

The horse being cooked is the Ice King's horse disguise from Adventure Time (The episode it's from is "The Eyes")

Glad to see your first experience of D&D was as chaotic and fun as it was for me, even chose the same race! Hope you have many more adventures, my resolution for New Year was to finally start my campaign this year after the years I've been trying to work up to running it with my friends/D&D group.

This is the most sane dnd campaign. Also I love that most adventures start with the party having literally no reason to go along with it yet they do. Even better when they dont even know each other but choose to risk their lives for eachother anyway. In my current campaign we chose to solve the mystery of the village simply because there was a mystery and we were there. It has nothing to do with our personal goals.

I'm currently unwell and feverish and hearing Jaiden say that AlphaRad and Ranboo were looking for me required a wisdom saving throw

As a D&D player, this was 100% accurate to how a campaign can go. While yes, Mark getting acid-blasted in the face was the funniest part, the best part about it was how you included Slimecicle and Ranboo's reactions to it with Jacob's shocked face, because sometimes the reaction is the funniest part of what happens.

@@genericname2747 what she might be referencing though is that decades ago people were actively bullied for geeky hobbies like D&D, so many players actually kept their games a secret. PLUS there was that whole "Satanic Panic" going on where the Christians were losing their minds. (With the 80s it was D&D, with the 90s it was Pokemon, yknow. It's all supposedly demons & evolution and stuff). So it was a lot of people's dirty little secret to spend their afternoon as an elf. Geek stuff gaining traction in the mainstream is something that's happened within the last decade or two, relatively new in its run.

I watched the vod of the actual campaign. There was actually some backstory stuff with Zoot's patron and the wand (Her character's class was a warlock), but it seems she cut that out of the animated version for time constraints.

I keep coming back to this video. I’d absolutely love to see you and more friends in these animated abridged versions of those stories.

Me and my friends made a version called doodles and dragons where you sketch out what you want to do, roll, and depending on what you get you draw your position that you wanted to be in or not and the dungeon master is called the doodle master instead

I love that this was Jaiden's first ever DND session and yet she pulled off the most pro-gamer move ever with the whole "DEPRESSION!" Command spell followed by the disguise self spell as the depressed enemy's estranged wife. Brilliantly done!

I love how, during Masked Dedede's theme in the background, Ranboo's character has a Master Crown moment.

This perfectly captures what DND with friends is like. You come in expecting Critical Role but in reality the GM is going to have to watch your characters eat mud. 😂

@grimrobot2059 technically it can't really do that because the spell she used was command. The spell only takes effect if the word can be used as a command like "HALT, STOP, GROVEL, RUN" and "depression" isn't really a command. But Charlie is a cool dm so he let it go because he's chill like that.

My first session we fight an owl bear. then beat it without anyone dying. We won because my friend said “dice go boing boing” the dropped the dice and rolled a nat20

In a DND campaign I'm in rn, I drank some goblins alive, and turned their skin into a bagpipe, then I later upgraded it with kobold bones. Also in that campaign, I suplexed a giant crystal snake, used my beard weapon(I begged a sentient, indestructible flower for brass-knuckles, but got that instead), then I ate a player(after the snake was killed[not by me]), they found a tapeworm thing in my stomach, killed it. Then I got +1 to my constitution save(it's now +9[we're level 8]).

I love how you presented this! It was so fun to watch and felt like the episode of a show! Amazing job as usual!

0:37 Don't feel too weird. This honestly prodded me into subscribing after having watched several of your videos.

Yesterday I did my first round of DnD: First thing we did, we encountered a water elemental, and we adopted it. Then we had a custody battle over it, only for it to chose someone else, and then I got ambushed by skeletons and I dodged their attacks like I had ultra instinct, we fought a Slime Boss, we yeeted our water baby into it, it absorbed the slime, and became a big boy. Then at the end, I yeeted one of my party members in the ocean.

I just love how obvious it is that Alpharad’s character seems modeled after that one gym leader in Scarlet/Violet lmao

My crazy’st dnd story is when my big dragon born guy who is a musician gets angry at this one NPC because we went down into the dungeon to save that NPC and others from the evil people so and he gets angry at him for breaking the 2 person elevator which we think is the only exit and my guy punches him with max roll brakes the bones in his face launches him into the back wall where he cracks the wall with the force then the NPC crawls into a hallway where he is eaten by a bug monster but also my guy in that campaign killed like every single think I don’t even know how but that was a bizarre campaign

I loved the part when the Worm said "It's worming time!" Truly one of the clay monsters of all time.

Thank you I understand dnd more now and was a big fan of it and would watch it while I drank at home the stories where so amazing until I heard this one and it being your first. I have been wanting to try dnd and I am afraid of not playing it right. But this video encouraged me to try and I would like to some time soon. I want to have the same experience you had a wonderful and fun time. Thank you so much for this video.

I think D&D is perfect for this channel honestly, animation needing story and story that could always benefit from being told visually, just an ideal combination.
