I’m 31 and this car is everything to me, lol. I don’t quite know why Matt keeps saying this car isn’t for him because of his age? Is it because the price is so high? E30’s don’t need to cost $100k to be great. But there’s a reason the market price is so high. E30’s are the root of euro car nerds from many age groups.

He got into them a few years later when the E36 was the hot ticket. For me I didn't get into BMW's at all until I was around 19 and bought my E34 535i, so even though I'm younger than Matt, and E30 M3 is still a dream

Would love to see Matt after driving these two, drive one with a s52 or s54. If that would change his mind at all. S14 is great for value for a low mileage or rare spec e30, but it has no guts! Also anything with fresh bushings, better suspension (strut and spring combo, or coilovers), and an upgraded steering rack absolutely changes how these cars drive!

They do make intakes and it's one of the best mods for the engine. The dtm race cars used carbon airboxes with no mass airflow sensor, and there are many high quality replicas available. They transform the sound of these, give better throttle response and a bit of power.

I had a friend in college that had one of these in 91, his was a 90. It was such a bad ass car. He bought it in Tampa at Reeves BMW and paid under $30k new for it, they gave him such a deal cause nobody wanted it, they sold 10-1 325is’s to the M3 cause of the inline 6. We had a lot of fun with this special car. It’s nuts what they have eclipsed in price to today. Rev it out for the fun.

As someone approaching 45 this June we share a lot of the same thoughts on this era of the M3. Likewise I always wanted a E36 growing up, especially in the infamous blue. As I grew into my thirties the E30 styling cues grew on me and wanted one even more. I'd probably never own one but I definitely appreciate what was available over 30 years ago. The Griot's Garage wagon is freaking epic to see in person!

Hey Matt, great video and great car. I know obviously since the car is not yours, you don't want to beat on it, but I will certainly say you were definitely not on ideal roads to really enjoy it. E30's love corners you can take with speed, like revving out 3rd gear into 4th when you're holding momentum. I also owned an E34 M5, and although it has significantly more power than the E30, it's a very similar sentiment. Almost feels "clunky" driving it around town and at low RPM's, but when you can wrap the gears out coming out of a nice corner is when it truly gets good. E36 and onward is where they stopped using "racing" engines and really started putting in stuff that is a lot more comfortable for daily driving. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to watching the video of you driving the Evo and others now as well.

Wish I still had it! 😢 Oh, and the front rotors were good for about 10-12k miles. Fortunately I put about that per year on it so they were covered under warranty.

I’m 52 this year and experienced this car in high school when one of my entrepreneurial friends bought a used one with money he’d saved up from mowing lawns over the years as a kid. I think he paid ~$15k for it. They were not very popular in era and didn’t sell well. The 325i was a faster car that did almost all of the same tricks, and was far less attention grabbing if you were a more reserved person. It was a fun (but slow) car and sounded good to rev out. We did plenty of high speed runs on the North Dallas Raceway, I mean Tollroad. Almost always loosing in the end to the Porsche, Mercedes, faster BMW, Saab, Lincoln, Cadillac, etc. If you have a bunch of money and can tolerate how much less performance you get from an 80’s sports sedan, this is a great piece to have. Like you Matt, for the money these fetch, I could never be happy with one. Best in my memories. Still excited for the series. It’s fun to restore any car to the best possible presentation.

weird that I have zero interest in BMWs or Porsches, my favorite car of yours that you have had is the C7 Corvette. Corvettes were my first love for cars back before I was in kindergarten. I have grown more into modern and muscle car era Mopars and love all eras of Dodge/ Ram trucks. I am about to hit 45. I still watch a huge portion of content. I have a huge disdain for Fords, but if someone gets their dream Mustang or preferred Ford, I still find it awesome for them. My first car I drove was an AMC Gremlin, first purchase was an 84 Chevy Chevette, first truck was an 80 Dodge D150.

Only preppy dorks would get an E30 M3 just because it was a BMW. All the serious car guys were driving actual performance cars.

Honestly this is a difficult car to justify, I’ve wanted one for the last 20yrs and now that I can afford one I would be scared to drive it because it’s meant to be a sideways around every corner and I know in ten years the base will be a half million dollar car. It hurts my heart to say because I’ve always thought they look incredible. I had a 2001 manual 325ci I bought to off a friend that needed some help and that car was a blast. I didn’t give a shit about if I wrapped it around a tree just had some slow car fun and sold it 3yrs later for what I paid.

There are multiple carbon intakes for this engine available - not as much as there used to be. Unfortunately the aftermarket companies have to constantly chase the new cars because their revenue always skews towards newer cars. The fuel injection on this car is rather dated at this point - so tuning is limited - an old kit called 'Alpha N' used to be popular but probably not supported well these days and may no longer be available. I would love to see what a modern aftermarket ECU with modern fuel injection and a small turbo could do on this engine. But the engine internals are so rare that few people want to risk breaking stuff by putting a turbo on it - so instead they just swap out a more modern engine. Which I guess is ok - but to me its like making an Aircooled 911 into an Electric car - misses the whole point.
