- 3 years back I had my 38K sq. ft. lawn turf completely stripped off, regraded and skimmed over with 2" of new loam in preparation of hydro-seed. The landscape architect recommended that the hydro-seed be applied immediately after re-loaming to avoid unnecessary soil compaction over time and rainfall. But, the most important thing he said was to have the area lightly wet down prior to spraying so the seed mixture will stick and adhere making a good ground contact without causing "moisture wicking" when applying the spray over the top of dry ground. Haha... needless to say, the lawn now looks PHENOMENAL, just like yours. Pete, keep up the great work in all you do for your family and, also for the continuous, informative content you provide for everybody else...

You've had your challenges with this project haven't you? I feel 'ya. Did a real heavy over seed last week in aug. thinking the extra 2 weeks of growth would help over winter. Here in Michigan we normally start cooling off and getting rain about then but no such luck. Bone dry and 90+ so water day and night for almost 3 weeks before the weather helped out. Did tall fescue/Kentucky mix and it's turned out great. Yours will too.

Pete I'm really glad you got connected with the guys from VSI. They are really good people. I love the idea of hydroseeding too - especially with the way you did it where you spray over top of the seed, that makes alot of sense to me for sure!

@ Allen and Pete. I bought one of these units from Adam at VSI after seeing them on the LCN channel. Its cool to see that you bought one to as well Pete. If you're interested I converted mine into a dual purpose unit by adding a strainer and with some different connections and hoses I turned mine into a dual purpose unit where not only can I do hydroseeding. But I can also throw down fert, herbicide, and pre emergent out of my Hydro seeder. @ Pete sometime I would like to pick your brain on your aeravator. I was hoping to maybe see you at GIE but didn't catch ya. Anyway glad to hear the good news I was praying for ya. Thanks to both of yalls great videos. Its how I got started this year. Cheers.

I've done a couple bluegrass renovations now and it seems like, between my experience and others, that Pete's unhappiness with how the renovation has gone is exactly the feeling everyone has when seeding 100% bluegrass. You have to start earlier than you want, you're still getting summer storms, the bluegrass takes forever to establish, it's thin, it pouts, and going into winter you're still not happy. Then next spring it explodes and you realize it was better than you thought.

Ive never heard of not putting the seed in the hopper but it makes sense if youre going for monocultures.

Looks good Pete!! We do several fall lawn renovation jobs annually here in MA. I describe the Hydroseed as “paper mache” to our customers as in it tacs it down pretty well. Makes the job much more resilient to rain, although not perfect, but much better than simply seeding over the top of a new renovation. I always include a hydroseeding In my proposals, and it even makes it more resilient to the customer to sticks a sprinkler out in the yard and forgets about it. I’ve seen that happen to much and plain grass seeds just floats around.

They've done studies and the wood based stuff works better than the the cellulose (paper based). Holds more water and the paper mache effect of the cellulose actually can hinder germination because it can crust over. I unfortunately had to use the paper because no one could get the wood based stuff. I've had to go around scratching up the paper mache and reseed in some spots. Of course that's still a good analogy for the customers regardless if you're using cellulose or wood mulch.

You need a FINN hydroseeder that can throw up to 150’ from the discharge tower or get another guy on the hose with you so you aren’t dragging and moving the seed you put down prior to laying the paper down. Or put the seed in the tank, which you don’t want to do.

Pete, I hope you do an update later on because you might recommend the hydroseed with what you have done so far, but the proof is in the pudding as they say and what are the end results. You, apparently, have not gotten to thst point yet so I will wait to see your recommendations when the process is finished.

Laying the seed down makes a ton more sense to me than mixing the seed in. Allows you to ensure seed to soil contact and use the hydroseeder as a barrier. It would be interesting though on a massive project to see if mixing the seed in brought your cost down. You'd have to spend time cleaning the tank really well but it could be more efficient at the end of the day. 53,000 square feet is a lot of spreading and aeravating.

Pretty cool piece of equipment! Does the paper mulch insulate the ground like wheat straw or is it just used to keep the seed in place? I know you are not a fan of wheat straw but I was just curious.

Great stuff Pete! Content idea: As you know, in NC it’s been very warm through early October. For the first time, my fungus protection expired, and I’m seeing small amounts of fungus in my turf after over-seeding. I would love to see a video on how to handle it. The elite program ends fungus applications in mid August.

Hi Pete, I have a question I hope you can answer. I just over-seeded my fescue here in Raleigh NC but I put down some granular starter fertilizer 18-24-12 slow release 50% XRT with micros with it. Can I also use the NextX Seeding/Over-seeding package also or would it be too much for the lawn & seed to handle? Will it burn the existing lawn or prevent germination etc.

You might want to see if your city has a portable water meter! My city lets you rent them and we can hook up to a fire hydrant and it’ll meter how much water you use and how ever often they choose you let them know the new meter amount! That way you don’t have to go to the shop three times on one yard!

Last weekend I planted Kentucky 31 tall fescue in my yard. It’s growing and I too have been fighting heavy rain since planting it. I have another 4000 square foot section I’m about to seed and hopefully everything will continue to grow. I’m hoping the fall leaves don’t smother the new growth. Wish me luck. 🤞

Pete we have rented hydro seeder several times over the years, never knew they made one this small to fit on truck. You said you added pellet mulch. We always used the country boy mulch. Looks the same but comes in blocks. I assume the same? Not sure. Rather hydroseed than straw for sure.

The cellulose mulch bails are typically much cheaper than pellets, but harder/more time consuming to break up in jet agitation machines. You can also find the mulch with or without tackifier blended in. Like you said beats the heck out of spreading straw and no undesirable weeds to contend with.

No contamination if you rinse out machine. Definitely recommended if you want it to last . Fertilizer will eat up pump

Doesn’t the force from the large diameter water hose displace the seeds you dropped separately?

Excellent comment and the answer is yes. My first “pass” over an area I always try and let the liquid fall straight down. Once the area has material on it then it holds the seed pretty good while I apply more. Great observation. That was one of the first things I noticed the first time I used it.

Why did you go with that machine ? We pretty much spray HP FGM 90 % of the time.

Is there not an effective way of clearing out different seed types from previous uses to prevent contamination so you aren't having to essentially double the amount of work you're doing? I haven't looked at pricing, but personally I'd want to leverage the convenience and capability of that hydro seeder to minimize the workload wherever possible (especially on big jobs/projects) and make that investment do as much work for me as it can. Also, I know you mentioned that it kind of hardens and gets tacky, but with heavy rain after hydro seeding, will reintroducing water/moisture to that slurry not soften it or break it down at all? I'm excited to see the progress! Thanks Pete!

Not all jet machines have a lower tank drain, agitation clean out, and a pump housing drain - you really need all to effectively clear out every remaining seed. Pump housing drain is a given and the minimum. Basically, drain and rinse the tank down with clear water until clean. Rinse out the agitation tube and pump housing. Put plugs back in, fill up with enough water to operate, run and spray out all lines and hoses. Then drain out whatever is left once again. It doesn’t take as long as it sounds.

How many square feet does that 400 gal tank cover?? How many bags of mulch? Just curious on cost and time. Is there a gallon per square foot rate that they say it covers?

400 gallons = 4000 squ ft. 1 bag of mulch = 800-1000 squ ft
