Hydroseeding extreme slopes. Steep cut bank.

Ойын-сауық

Hydroseeding an extreme cut bank in a remote location. Wood fiber mulch.
This slope is near vertical. There is no erosion control for anything this steep, but an attempt at a vegetation cover is a wise idea. Hydroseeding is the only method of application to deliver seed to this target area.
Wood fiber mulch is heavy duty and grips well. It last longer than recycle paper or straw mulch.
Bio-directional spray pattern gives 100% coverage. This eats up more material, 20 to 50% more than flat lawn area.
Seed and material prices...OMG WTF? I am reconsidering global warming.

It was a Teflon based product an asphalt trucker gave me. He used it to coat the dump bed to keep asphalt from sticking to the truck. This was 15 years ago, I have never seen the product again.

What is the seed you are using. Is the machine common at an equipment rental yard?

Seed is common as erosion control mix. I add some more fescue. The only style you will see at a rental yard is a small paper mulch machine. They can't shoot much over 20 feet.

I really don't know any better but isn't this a land slide waiting to happen? Some of the trees at the top (0.09 sec.) seem undercut. Don't mind my uninformed comment.

You are absolutely correct. Hydroseeding and grass roots only stabilize the top few inches. There is nothing to prevent the whole slope from sliding.

  • @gorgeoutdoors

I don't market at all anymore, I half retired. Only a hand full of builders and developers know me. I used to have to do the big rat race, answer the phone, and so on. Environmental services was the big push. Having full service helped bring this business, trees and shrubs, soil, hydro seeding, and other erosion control. I would try and network with others who provide soil, irrigation, natural shrubs, who don't have a machine or hydro seeder contact. Most of the landscapers here will do prep and irrigation, and have me shoot a lawn mix.

So how is the homeowner going to trim/mow this? Or just let it grow for erosion control?

  • @gorgeoutdoors

No mow, just let it grow. A vegetative cover is the attempt, to keep rain from eroding the bank. I never made it back to this spot to see how it did.

@@gorgeoutdoors interesting to see how this looks now, is terraseeding alot better of a solution for something like this? I have been looking into utilizing a solution for shoreline slope/bluff stabilization in Ontario on the great lakes. I like the concept of the hydroseed. It kind of reminds me of shotcrete

  • @gorgeoutdoors

    @gorgeoutdoors

I never make it back to most of these sites. This bank is too steep to get any soil to hold. It was excavated near vertical, so no on the terraseed process. It requires something to stick, and something to apply to the heights. Very similar process to shotcrete. Shoreline erosion can be tough. Small trees and shrubs are best. Jute netting, sprig and plug planting of small native shrubs and hydroseed an erosion mix over the top has proven results. This is a common required construction phase here in Oregon.

Spray one direction, then come back and spray the other direction. That gives a bio-directional application. Mulch application rates are listed in pounds per acre. 1,000 pounds per acre is light and will show some soil, 2,000 pounds per acre should cover all soil. This was around 1,800 pounds per acre.

@@gorgeoutdoors So I built one with a IPC tote. 250 gallon. Jet agitated . For small project. My thing is that the fiber seems to float to the top ? I have to make 3 passes for it to look green finally. Should I change the direction of the jet so it Goes into the mixture more ? It's so strong going to the tote walls atm

  • @gorgeoutdoors

Yes, most all mulch will float. The auger provides superior mixing; a thicker slurry can be made, and a better ratio of mulch to water. This was wood fiber mixed at 400 pounds per 1000 gallons of water, and does about 10,000 sq feet. It would never work without the auger blending and the high power pump. For your jets, I would position them to create vertical circulation, so material circulates top to bottom. My auger can reverse, making mixing easy. Heavy circulation can reduce take capacity. Reduce this down: 400 pounds per 1000 gallons = 4 pounds per 10 gallons = 1 pound per 2.5 gallons of water. You should be using 100 pounds of mulch for 250 gallons of water. If I go much below this, it will take 3 passes to get good green coverage.
