When I think back on the '90s, I remember it as a Golden Age for Hong Kong Cinema! Not only was there a steady stream of great, creative movies coming out of East Asia, but they were widely shown in the US!!... that just does not happen today... it was the last decade where there were still a lot of independent theaters, art houses, etc. Now most theaters are controlled by a few chains and they're all showing the same 8 movies in every neighborhood in the city. The '90s was not my favorite decade for American releases ... although there were (of course) some great ones, there was far too much money invested on dud vehicles for third rate actors (in my opinion) like Gwyneth Paltrow, Hugh Grant and the Friends cast. Anyway, here's my list: 1990: Days of Being Wild; Awakenings 1991: A Brighter Summer Day 1992: Enchanted April 1993: Manhattan Murder Mystery; Groundhog Day; Dazed and Confused 1994: Chungking Express; Vanya on 42nd Street; Wild Reeds 1995: Fallen Angels 1996: Trainspotting; Fargo 1997: Happy Together 1998: _no choice_ 1999: The Matrix; Sleepy Hollow

The 1990s: 1990 - Look, I know I SHOULD go for 'Goodfellas' but I'm not. But instead I'm going for a beloved sequel - nope, not BTTF IIII, nor Predator 2 nor Robocop 2. I'm going for 'Gremlins 2 - The New Batch'. I adore the zaniness of this sequel. 1991 - Bit torn here. BUT, all things considered, even though I'm a bigger fan of the original - I'm going with 'Terminator 2 - Judgment Day'. Props to 'Prince of Thieves' though. 1992 - A three-way tie for sure - it's between 'A Few Good Men', 'Braindead' (aka Dead Alive) and 'Glengarry Glen Ross'. There's 'Reservoir Dogs' to consider, too. 1993 - Groundhog Day. Each and every time. 1994 - Hmm...'Forrest Gump' (yeah, always really liked it) or 'The Shawshank Redemption' (I was one of the few that went to the cinema to watch it). 1995 - Seven. Although I very nearly put 'Waterworld' there, and there's the excellent 'Crimson Tide', too. 1996 - Mission Impossible. Which sort of surprised me, too. 1997 - Grosse Pointe Black. So very re-watchable. Glad to hear a shout-out to 'Drive' though. Nice one, Daniel! 1998 - Ringu. Proper eerie and scary. The Hollywood remake was pretty good, but doesn't top this Japanese original. 1999 - Star Wars - The Phantom Menace. Not the cool choice sure, and Fight Club IS my No.2. But, hey, The Phantom Menace is easily the film I've seen the most from this year, and although yes, I do have a few issues with it, it's a big epic sci-fi fantasy film in the Star Wars universe.

Oh man ….,I’m so so so disappointed with your 1993 pick. Groundhog Day is a cute movie I’m not saying it’s bad.. BUT this is the year that TRUE ROMANCE ❤🔫 👼came out… when I went to the theatre to see it I stayed and watched it 3Xs ( it is pretty much my favorite movie) it’s written by Q Tarantino but thankfully directed by Tony Scott ( who saved the movie’s ending ❤) and it has an absolutely insanely amazing cast … Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette have such crazy chemistry.. and it just gets better from there.. gary oldman’s ruthless yet hilarious Drexel we get the stunning prototype for Tony soprano with james gandolfini’s hit man Virgil the fight scene with arquette is perfection, the walken and hopper face off , an imaginary “Mentor” elvis, I could go on forever.. and if for some unimaginable reason this isn’t your cup of tea 1993 also gave us the beautiful stop motion animation classic Tim Burton’s The Nightmare before Christmas 🎄🎃… ps I just randomly found your channel today when I watched your 15 best 1980’s vampire movie list ( fun picks) .. Here's my list: 1990 Close-Up, but I've watched Home Alone a lot more! 1991 Only Yesterday AND Beauty and the Beast - two of my top 5 animated movies 1992 My Cousin Vinny - no contest, but Unforgiven and The Last of the Mohicans are pretty good too :) 1993 Jurassic Park by a mile, but runners up are Groundhog Day and Gettysburg 1994 The Shawshank Redemption, ru: Little Women, Hum Aapke Hain Koun 1995 Pride and Prejudice (a miniseries, but I'm counting it because my list), ru: Apollo 13, While You Were Sleeping, Sense and Sensibility, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. One of the best years of all time for romcoms! 1996 Star Trek: First Contact - love this movie, but 1996 is a rather weak year for me. Resistance is futile! 1997 Princess Mononoke, ru: The Rainmaker 1998 The Truman Show, ru: La Vita a Bella 1999 The Sixth Sense, ru: The Winslow Boy

The 90s might be my least favourite year for film. I just took a quick look, and if it wasn't for the Coen Bros being in their prime, I doubt I'd have much of a list at all: 1990 Miller's Crossing (My very favourite film) 1991 Barton Fink 1992 The Muppet Christmas Carol 1993 Jurassic Park 1994 The Legend of Drunken Master 1995 Heat 1996 Fargo 1997 Princess Mononoke 1998 The Big Lebowski 1999 The Talented Mr Ripley I watched all of the other videos in the series, but didn't make a list for them - maybe I'll go back and do that.

In The Mouth of Madness was inspired by Lovecraft, but not based on anything by him.
