    You should get into ancient crossbows, they were much more efficient than medieval steel crossbows. The Greeks, Romans, and Chinese used longer powerstrokes. My 95 lb Ancient Chinese crossbow with a 31" draw length shoots the same bolt energy and momentum as tod’s 960lb steel crossbow.

    @@Magikarp-zk7io You certainly can't engage your back muscles while prone or in a weird position. I speculate kneeling won't be an issue for many bows if kneeling is anything similar to horse back riding where it mainly affects the thigh & leg muscles. Horse archers regularly used heavy draw weight recurve bows. For example, heavier Mongol bows were around 160 lbs, and the Song Dynasty required class 1 cavalry archers to use a 120lb bow at the minimum (in contrast to 160lbs minimum for class 1 infantry archers). There are of course, physically large bows such as Welsh-English longbows, larger recurve bows (eg. Manchu recurves), and Japanese Yumi longbows that are as tall as or taller than a person. In these situations, it might still be possible to shoot while kneeling with specific designs (eg. the asymmetric design of the Yumi) or canting the bow diagonally more. (eg. KZread has a video called the Koshiya Kumiyumi, Battlefield Archery Demonstration where Japanese archers in armor are seen shooting while kneeling)

    @@b.h.abbott-motley2427 I wouldn't say much more. Tod's done videos on how powerful you can get with difference spanning devices; his estimate for the maximum practical goat's foot-spanned crossbow is 550 lbs, and 1500 lbs for the windlass. You'd have to be very strong to work with those maximums, so a typical soldier wouldn't be using crossbows that powerful. In fact, according to Mike Loades, the most common medieval crossbows were simple wooden-lathed, belt hook-spanned crossbows (which Tod estimates to have a maximum draw weight of 320 lbs; Mike Loades contends that they would typically be closer to 200 lbs).

  • @Intranetusa

    @Intranetusa

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@InSanic13 I wouldn't adhere to Todd's estimates too much as they are estimates base on limited information that are contradicted by other sources. Mike Loades in his various books about crossbows book admits that there are a huge range of possibilities. Mike Loades cites Stephen Selby and states that ancient "elite" Chinese crossbowmen were said to have drawn crossbows of around ~700 lbs with muscle power (likely by using the laying down leg press maneuver). Iolo's Book of Crossbows states that "Modern experiments suggest that one-foot bows might draw up to 150 kilograms [330lbs] and two foot-bows as much as 200 kg [441 lbs]" - so a reasonably fit/good conditioned person can draw as much as 441 lbs in an upright position with muscle power alone (probably using a deadlift like maneuver). It is believed that Han Dynasty crossbowmen were required to draw a "minimum" of ~150 lbs to qualify as an entry level crossbowman, while the most common/median crossbowmen were drawing ~387 lb crossbows.

    @@InSanic13 I suspect Tod's somewhat underestimating belt-spanning methods & the goat's-foot lever. Crossbowers trained extensively, just like & alongside archers, so I believe the good ones were every bit as strong as good archers. See the 15th-century text *El Victorial*. Spanning a heavy crossbow from the belt was a feat of strength. People competed to span heavy crossbows. Tod seems to be able to shoot maybe a 90-100lb bow comfortably. While quite impressive by contemporary standards & much more than what I could manage, many historical English archers shot 150-160lb bows. I suspect a similar 1.5x (or so) multiplier applies to crossbow spanning methods. While I'm sure some historical crossbows were quite weak, 350lb steel crossbow spanned by lever & 200lb wood crossbows spanned by the belt don't seem like credible military weapons. The archaeological evidence for 250-500lb steel lever crossbows is clear from 16th-century naval finds as I recall, but such crossbow weren't necessarily serious weapons & could have been more for hunting. The best European military crossbow saw use by high-status cavalry, threatened a fully equipped man-at-arms (according to Pietro Monte), could hold their own against the arquebus in the early 16th century (according to Raimond de Fourquevaux), & had a chance to wound or kill against soldiers in lower-quality harness (Fourquevaux).

    Another benefit of crossbows over bows is that you can have them pre-loaded. For example, if you need to maintain a consistent rate of fire upon an enemy, you can have a line of shooters with a line of reloaders behind them. The reloaders can reload the empty crossbows and hand them to the shooters, which allows the shooters to be basically always shooting and never cranking, especially if you have 2 extra crossbows and loaders per shooter. Basically the medieval equivalent of a line of turrets, or the European version of a carousel. NOTE: For those of you thinking "Well, if you have more crossbows and more people, why not just have people crank their own crossbows?" and the reason is that the people rapid-firing the crossbows will be acting as protection for the people loading, while when you load your own crossbow, you're just sitting there in the open vulnerable to attack. There's also the benefit of a mechanical-action mindset, where a person can repeat the same task over and over again better if they aren't distracted by swapping between tasks.

  • @AzureBeatPony

    3 жыл бұрын

    Materials problems. Most crossbows were wood prods, and simple wood bows have a fundamental limitation: you cannot have a draw stroke more than about 1/3rd to 1/4th it's length. From memory that's about the ratio, and the thicker the bow, the worse the ratio. So a 6" draw stroke mandates as much as a 24" bow. To get an 12" draw, now you need minimum 36", and more like 40" bow. If you want a good draw length and big draw weight without a cam system, you need a long bow. No one want's a 60"+ bow mounted on their crossbow, so you need to compromise usability with effectiveness.

    Against unarmored targets yes, not against armored targets. Mechanical broadheads wouldnt have been much use in medieval battle. If you where shooting against armor you would want the heavier projectile with a bodkin tip, which the medieval bows fire as standard and most modern bows cant handle well. If you shot the same weight of bolt/arrow out of the modern bow, the projectile speed would take a huge dive. Its more a case of intended use. The medieval crossbows do have a place, just its place is set in history/fun not modern day hunting. Skall touches on this in the vid and tod workshop covers it in excess.

    I love crossbows, i own seven of them ranging in pull from 50 to 250 pounds and I love hunting with them. My favorite one is a Barnett Wildcat with a sawed off stock, it pull 150 pounds, it's lightweight, portable and can take anything from doves to deer. Where I come from you need a hunter's license, firearms carry license, game tag and an up to date hunting club membership to be able to hunt with a rifle, handgun or shotgun, it can become very expensive very quick., If you want to hunt with a bow or crossbow all you need is a hunter's licence and the game tag, it's way easier and less expensive and it's one of the reasons why I like crossbows so much, that and the fact that they are accurate and powerful man powered weapons while also being relatively simple.

    Get some 60 or 80 grit sandpaper and sand the wedges across... Opposite direction you would do a sword. Doing that really helps keep wedges tight by increasing the friction. Any metal wedges used for anything should have scratches like that in them, if they are smooth or worn in the direction the wedges are inserted give them a sandpaper treatment.

    Ars Moriemendi (The Art of Dying) was a HUGE part of medieval paintings. Basically it means that "If you were a good person, you'd go to heaven when you die." Therefore, when you depict someone getting injured or killed in a painting or a mural, you make sure they don't appear very bothered, because to otherwise would mean that you believe they wouldn't go to heaven, and that's slander to the point that it could cost your life.

    For me, I honestly care more about the spanning method than the ballistics. (I don't have a collection, but I've tried my hand at making them.) Because I shoot them for fun, it's more of a plinker, I'm definitely not intending to shoot a charging knight through his shield. So, for a fun target bow, I want to spend more time shooting, less time fiddling with a windlass. What Tod calls a "Latchet Crossbow" kzread.info/dash/bejne/potozruhaLzNY5s.html That's about the most practical one, because you don't have to carry a separate device, pick it up, use it, set it down, set a bolt, then aim, and shoot. It's self contained, that's what I like about it. About as fun to use as a spring piston air-rifle. (Mine is scaled up. IDGAF if it's period accurate, but about as close a copy as I could make, scaled up for a longer draw.)

    I know, you want to role play as, whatever your character's name is. So, you want to minmax the most powerful thing you can possibly handle, then brag about it being at least half again as powerful, but if I'm out hunting, I have a Shotgun. Somebody breaks into my house, I'm probably not reaching for the arbalest. The arquebus, and the musketoon aren't even loaded. I might pick up one of my warhammers because I have a few (Therefore one might be handy) and I don't have to worry about swinging through the wall into the next room. If it's for fun, then my primary concern is that it's fun, and not a PITA to play with. If a dragon attacks, or zombies, I'm sure I'll figure something out.
