This type of video IS a necessity, I believe. Yes, many just want to see burnouts, and unfortunately, engine carnage/failure. Those of us who once did things like this, want to see a successful build and appreciate the time and effort put into it. Patience is a key to doing it right. Keep doing it right. I applaud you. On your bearing clearance, you said .022. You wrote .0022. That's a big difference. 22 thousandths and 2 thousandths 2 tenths is a country mile in this situation.

I was in in the shower when I heard him say .022 thou and instantly said WTF? Lol. I misspeak in my videos all the time. I try to add text when I catch my mistakes. 2 thou and 2 tenths of a thou, aka .0022 sounds about right.

I always put the cam in first so you can reach right through the bottom of the block and pull it through. Just a little easier on a guy. Looks like a good healthy small block good job.

Thank you, I just learned what not to do. Main bearing clearance same as ring gap 22 thou, the oil pump is safety springed not safety wired and beat the hell out of the cam bearings putting the cam in. But practice makes perfect and expensive.

I didn't know about that roller bearing for the camshaft, hella cool stuff.

I have a '73 Bronco I put a '92 5.0 HO in back in 2005. Blew that up awhile ago, rebuilding the engine in a similar fashion this summer. Look forward to hearing your rig rip it.

I don’t think you can just remove that roller bearing on the cam gear. You need counter sunk bolts on the cam thrust plate for that timing chain. I could be wrong, but check your camshaft end play to verify.

I agree. The gear bearing keeps the cam from moving in, the other bearing keeps the cam from moving out.

All I know is you need your own engine dyno ASAP. I personally LOVE seeing engine assembly work like this and then seeing it put on the dyno and tweaked to maximize performance. (Engine Power is one of my favorite shows from Power Nation).

I've installed several flat tappet cams in the last couple years and I've never had an issue with Howards or Isky cams or lifters and I've built a bunch of circle track/hotrod engines over the years. I've heard alot of local engine builders talk about cam failures in the last couple years but I've been very fortunate, I guess. Always use the recommended oil from the cam manufacturer and make sure to adjust your valves correctly and not too tight, so many people adjust valves to tightly.

I'm going to rebuild my 289 engine and you inspired me to do this now it's just gathering parts and finding a good machine shop and gathering money

I put in a new oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket, new water pump, and valve cover gasket on my 1992 F150 last year. This is a very low mileage truck (less than 73K). Had to take a lot of stuff off the engine in order to get the engine high enough so when I dropped the oil pan it would clear the crossmember. Had to drop the oil pump and pickup tube in the oil pan in order to remove the pan. There was no gasket anywhere in the oil pan, There was a gasket between the pump and pickup tube but for the oil pump where it mounts to the engine block , no gasket in the pan, on the pump and engine block. That was the case also when I replace the oil pan gasket on my 1995 Mustang GT. I'm thinking that the two machine surface (pump and block) are so even that when bolted together oil seepage is nonexistent or so minimal that it doesn't effect the oiling of the engine. I reinstalled the pumps without a gasket because that's how it came off the engine. Oil pressure is great Found the 1992 F150 on Craigslist in 2014 was listed as 1992 F150 less than 47K original miles $5500.00. The guy I bought it from said he got it at an Estate sale and thought it would be fine to haul his camper but told me that the 302 engine was too small. He said he needed at least a 351 or bigger engine.

Our cam specs are really close, im running a older lunati roller and I can tell you this camshaft doesn't make alot of vacuum. So if you've got power brakes you need to run a vacuum canister. Since your manual transmission your good there.

Trying to get rid of my lifted Jeep and get into something similar got my eye on a 78 at a local dealership 😉 well I believe it's a 78 dent side anyway I want it 68s to hard to find and ppl rather them rust in there yard unless you got the $ to pay here in Georgia mountain area.

Thinking that cam is going to go higher than you think, but you have the bottom end to go as high as it wants so should be good. My massaged stock bottom end 351 does 7k and those 302s have nice tiny bearings and less stoke. With aftermarket rods i wouldnt be afraid of 8k unless youve got some lead pistons. I like your clearances, ive been called old school but i still like to see .001 -.0012 per inch for anything thats going to see high rpm. My 351 came out to .0032 on the mains and .0025 on the rods and i run 10w40.

But being on disability time i do find a motor to build and get the money saved up for what they are asking .sombody always beats me to it . So you removed the torrington bearing from the camshaft timing gear because the cam thrust plate must have countersunk bolts attaching it to the block so the bearing has a completely flat surface to ride on... Curious, do you now have it riding against those bolt heads? Did you check camshaft thrust clearance after the timing set was fully installed?

Did you mean 2.2 thousands clearance because 22 thousands clearance would be .0220 and 2.2 thousands would be.0022 i worked in a machine shop learned a lot about measuring in decimals

Hopefully you do something for oil control, such as a windage tray and crank scraper. The higher you spin it, the more critical it is to control oil.

Im an old timer and maybe I can learn something new. Our line of thinking was always the top piston ring is closer to the combustion and takes more heat than the bottom ring , therefore it will grow a little more than the bottom ring , tightening up just a hair more than the bottom ring. Everyone I ever knew put a larger gap in the top ring. Has new technology or different thought changed that line of reason?

Nah, nah, nah... keep them assembly videos coming. I soak the information up like a sponge! Every bit of new info is always helpful. Same with brand recommendations of engine parts! I have a 460 waiting to be built and i have never done a complete build before. Im greatful for videos like this! :)

His is a bump side. But the dentsides are just as nice. I have a 76 f100 that I will be restoring to a bicentennial. 302 auto 2wd long bed. Love the truck and can't wait to get back to driving it again. Been sitting for the last year after a huge life change. Never takes much to get em back going though. After 11 years I had her running again in a weekend. Best of luck to ya once you get your project going.

Some people might get confused by your explanation of the measurement you got when clearancing your mains. You said .0022 is 22 thou, which is 22 thousandth. .0022 is 2.2 thousandth. That might throw some people off.

I have lost count of how many times you have rebuilt 302's for your F100, Mustang, Town Car, Etc. As much as I enjoy watching you I have a few questions about your process. 1) Why are you using a 2-bolt production block; 2) Why not use main studs and/or stud girdle with a 2-bolt; 3) What are the rod clearances(journal and side);4) What head gasket thickness are you choosing;5) What lifter modification kit are you using without machining the lifter bores for proper alignment and sizing; 6) are you degreeing the camshaft or are you trusting the manufacturer is honest on the cam card? I know the Mexico block and value, the correct code block that matches what was in the truck when new has sentimental value, but at what point does all that become moot in this project and you choose to build a replica Boss 302 with Ford Motorsport/SVO/Performance or similar block so you can turn 9000 rpm and NOT blow it up on camera?
