That sounds adorable! I'm still in high school and quite openly furry, although not in America so there's a much smaller chance of finding any furry friend groups in one place in real life but you've given me hope to try once I get into uni ^w^

I'm gonna be in college in a few months from now, and I decided to sign myself up for a themed housing thing that was LGBT+ (I'm still in the closet). Knowing that most furries are queer and also probably nuerodivergent, this comment made me really happy to know that I can make friends!

I pretty much have had the complete opposite experience. To dumb it down: 95% of my experience with furries is Harbee’s twitch stream. tbh I’ve probably gotten more isolated since I joined cuz I see all this furry stuff I want to go take part in but I’m too nervous, but I also spend less time with my friends cuz I am doing things related to it that I don’t want them to see or find out. All my friends are anti-furs so no chance I’ll tell them, and I’m too nervous to look for furries irl cuz i don’t want to be caught associating with them. Hell I’ve spent 20 minutes hyping myself up to hit enter on this comment.

Can relate tbh. I actually don't think I've ever interacted with someone who is a furry while knowing they are a furry, even online, besides this comment, for this exact reason; just can't be caught associating; I've purely consumed furry content. The idea of going to a furry convention just makes me think of all the logistics to hide that I'm going, which honestly just sucks, so I won't do it for the forseeable future. I was hoping this would change a bit in college but my school don't even have a furry club 😭. I've seen furries around but only this one guy who wears Nomad Complex and this other guy who has a fursuit head.

I've felt the same after I confessed to myself that I'm a furry. (The "20 minutes to hit enter" was highly relatable.) I was super anxious about doing ANYTHING furry related. It's so sad that we're forced to stay like this... I'm much more careless about it now, basically everyone I know knows I'm a furry - my friends were mostly just neutral about it. I'm sorry your friends act as such...

Been in the fandom since like 2012 or something, i was very young but just totally adored what I had seen. And now here I am back home after FWA 2024 with some slight PCD, just excited to go to my next con. Going to a first "big con" (TFF 2024) has definitely changed me in some way. That feeling you get is addicting.

I used to play animal crossing (this was before I even knew what a furry was) and I was genuinely disappointed that you didn’t get to BE an animal character. 😭

That's pretty cool, I can see your Fursona is a dragon and I personally can't decide out of wolf and dragon for my character.

The feeling with the first suiter I can relate. I met the first suiter on a Cos-Play convention of a co-worker. It was a purple bat and most of all, and those in the fandom know those are rare as heck, FEMALE Suiter. Not only suit but the person inside. And I felt so stranged out as my dad was with me and I was in the predicament: Does I ask her for a photo? A hug? She was adorable! But then my dad would see and I might feel weird. But I did it and asked for taking photos of her. And it was glorious. ^^

hehe glad you found what makes you happy harbee. but I have to giggle a bit at how recent it all is for you. I went through a similar process of self discovery but it was 2 decades ago for me. ^_^

I have a similar story and I am still dealing with it. I'm only openly known as a furry on Discord and probably will never tell my family about it, knowing that, at least my parents, don't like furries. I am very secluded from the fandom still, barely knowing anyone who is a furry, but want to explore more but afraid too because of my parents. I'll definitely explore more when I get to college coming up but glad to hear that there are people who've struggled with there furry side just like I have/do ❤

i think my experience was pretty straight forward! i always had a preference for anthropomorphic animal characters growing up; i would watch the lion king 2 over and over again because i had a crush on kovu. i still do, tbh! i was obsessed with the legend of spyro trilogy and this one character called cynder the dragon, who is spyro's gf in those games. had a fat crush on her LMAO and still do; actually, i still have most of my childhood character crushes! then when i was around 13 and started getting on the internet more and more, i found that there were other people who liked "furry" characters, and that led me to take several "am i furry?" quizzes, which ultimately ended up in me being proud to call myself a furry by the age of 15. i was taught to always be myself and that being unique is good, actually! so, i was never silent about the things i enjoyed. so naturally, my whole family knew about all my special interests like sonic, mlp, spyro, etc!! now i am 24 and couldn't be prouder to be a furry, although the community is kinda tearing itself apart with the whole feral vs anthro nonsense, but i wont get into that. its always nice to hear about other people's experiences, and i think that your old sona and your new sona are both very cute! i have never really had a solid fursona, i always change mine a lot and there have always been huge periods of time where i didn't even have one. my current one is a black fox named after myself, and he is just my regular cartoon persona as a furry, so maybe he will stick around this time :D

I got in the fandom by uh... Seeing like... Some random thing online and going "Who's this person?" on a hate post. I read into it and saw their friends and saw a community and couldn't stop thinking about it. I had felt similar feelings for quite some time and I had been in the gacha community for a bit (Yes, I know, the gacha community... I'm not in there anymore.) and I just went, "yeah sure" and uh... My life is different now.

I actually became a furry in 4th grade when i had a so called "crush" on a kid (i didnt know i was ace and thought i HAD to have a crush to be normal) and the kid asks "are you a furry" and i thought it was something cool so i said yes :D and a little later since he was gone i looked it up on my school i pad and was like Shit i am a furry and realized being a furry was seen as weird / bad and stuff so i mainly kept it to myself now i enjoy drawing furry art and im thinking of trying to find a fellow furry but for now whenever people use "furry" as an insult or when someone says their 20% xyz animal and someone calls them a furry, i usually hold back. but i bet i wont find a furry because many fear telling anyone and its a phase that furries "think their animals" ??? if you actually think your a dog physically you'll probably need therapy no offense and also that furries bark at people {watches the anti furrs bark} blink blink

Had the same experience with furries as well. Have just been in this community for about half a year and met other furries for less then two. But damn do I feel like I've found my place finally. Guess all my schoolmates joking about me being a furry was right haha

The Fandom changed my life too, before becoming a furry i was quiet and very shy but now thanks to the fandom i've broken out of my shell and i've made soooo many friends

i joined the fandom summer 2018, i was just watching some random animation videos and suddenly saw a video with telephone, though it looked adorable and instantly got obsessed and made my sona a few days later ahahah. and ofc since the first furry i saw wasd a dutch angel dragon i ended up making her one, and she has blue as her secondary colour ahhaha just call her a fluffy dragon instead of a dutchie now tho

Relatable beginning

Cool. Thing is, from what you said, you're a bit like I was when was younger. I had an interest in it all, before I knew others did also. Took me years before I found out about furries. Was not until I got my first job, got my own PC, and got myself online for the first time. By then, I was 20. I got to see my first set of furry art, aside from my own, and many furry sites. Such as YeffStar, now known of as SoFurry. I did say, "furry art, aside from my own," for I did start to make some furry art, before I found out others where doing the same. And yes, as the name implies, YeffStar had lots of NSFW furry art and stories in it I got to see for the first time also. I was very addicted to that, as something so new to me. I was 20, so didn't matter if I had seen such things. ^.^ Should not be surprising I had an interest in furry art and such from the start. For as a kid, I was bombarded by anthro and animal cartoon characters, and the shows many of them be in together. Be them Snoopy, Droopy, Chilly Willy, Bugs and Daffy, Tom and Jerry, Garfield, Heathcliff, Mickey, Get Along Gaing, ShirtTails, Paw Paw Bears, The Green Forest, and seemingly countless others. And I loved all of it! ^.^ When I discovered furries online, I didn't think of myself as someone wanting to be like them. I knew I was one of them, instead of an outsider looking in, due to our mutual shared interest in all things furry. Having any shame for it. There was none. The idea of furries was so new to most at the time, and furry things was just seen of as funny animal art, and as such, fairly mainstream. It was not seen of as unusual to have an interest in such things. If you was good at it, you might be just though of as someone who might become another animator some day, like so many others. And at the time, noting outlandish about that to basically anyone. In school, I was never seen for my interest in making furry art as odd. Some who did like my work, would make requests of things they would like to see me draw. I remember some girl had asked me to draw Scooby Doo for her. It ended up looking more like Marmaduke, but she liked it anyway. As for my family, no issues there either. True story. ^.^

I kidna wish i had a better introduction to the fandom like this. Makes me feel some kind of fomo... It was all the bad stuff you often hear too much about, all the mean people, bullies, and haters of people who aren't furries. Ngl. It kinsa sucked. I later in life met some better people but they quickly realized my perception of furries was tainted from the start.

i started exploring it after reading about the chlorine gas attack in the news, but hid my interest from everyone, including a furry i worked closely with professionally, until January of this year

I live in a rural town, been here my entire life. I’m a furry and so is 4/5s of my freind group. Only one who’s not is still a supporter and loves the art style and content. Thing is, I still haven’t come out to anyone other than my freinds about being a furry. Tho some of the school knows after some minor mistakes of saying shit outloud. Sadly the town I live within doesn’t understand a LICK of what the difference between furrys, therains and zoos are. They just group them all together. Saying shit like furrys think they are animals and fuck animals which is disgusting. That is mainly why I Havnt come out to any adults, for I fear I’ll basically be outcasted by my home town for stupid rumors. Doesn’t help that there has been a MASSIVE increase of people in my town, random people from places like California or Washington and they come in the town and hang flags upside and talk about this will be the last stand and say “stop the invasion” (about people moving in) when they are the “invasion”. If I came out it would spread like a flame to fry grass or shit like Facebook and suddenly there would be people trying to cure and pray for my help. Already a guy doing that saying that tarot cards and fortune cookies or being a homo is sins and you go to hell. Got an entire posse of people following the self proclaimed “preist.” Sorry about the huge paragraph. Just got overly vent full.

I have known to at least some degree that I am one since High School, so thats a minimum of 14 years. For some reason I still don't even have a Sona. Sadly I never got to have an experience like yours with the furry club, because the College I went to didn't even really have clubs, let alone one for that. Think this year I need to figure out a way to get to at least one con since I have never been to one. Do you know if the one at Virginia Beach is any good? I figure it being in the same state I live makes it the most accessible, even though I know noone and wouldn't be able to find a room.

I basically have the same story. I've been lurking at furry stuff for 10 years without really engaging in it. But look at me now, i have a fursona since few weeks, and i'm going to a con in a few month! You can do it!

Basicly the same for me, I mean my favorite pokémons allways were Lucario, Vaporeon, Vulpix and Mewtwo. Then in the summerhollydays 2022 (i think) i found out about the furry fandom and instandly loved it. And so far i brougth 3 of my friends into the fandom. (the PathOwOgen is real) It's been so fun i can't even discribe it. yeah have a good day i guess

My thing is I always liked this idea. I have... well an odd relationship with the concept to say the least. But long story short I bought a rexouium avatar in VR Chat and at that point I was like "eh frick it if I have a furry avatar Ill just get into furry crap"

Still don’t know to this day how I joined just woke up and I saw a furry and said yep I fell in the furry hole

I was already looking at creature and anthro art on dA and preferred furry avis on IMVU long before I knew I was a furry. The fire began when an ex-friend jokingly called me a furry for wanting fingerless paw gloves. It never clicked to me that it was something outside of dA and IMVU but having virtually no knowledge of the fandom, I got curious and did a Google search (thank God nothing gross showed up) and that was it. I was a furry. And I, similarly, found my people. 🥹
