You can prevent tears in most cases by avoiding epidural and following your body’s cues for pushing instead of coached pushing. I have had 4 babies all over 8.5lbs with no tears….each time just listening to my body for pushing.

I didn’t have an epidural but my baby was going into distress right at the end and I could barely stand anymore plus the pain was absolutely excruciating so I pushed like mad to get that baby out of me and still no perineal tearing, I did experience 3 labial tears tho which I honestly think might be worse, sometimes tearing is out of our control, it’s not that bad.

Just had my baby. This advice is so great! But my recent experience made me realize there are women out there who physically cannot do much of what is recommended for easing labor and birth. I was really limited with my mobility for 7 weeks leading up to labor due to a severe knee injury ( major meniscus and ACL tear) which kept me locked in a brace from shin to upper thigh - no weight bearing unless locked straight, so no movements allowed with my knee bent bearing ANY weight. Also on crutches post surgery and unable to walk much. Shower allowed but no soaking. I did do perineal massage 3x/week for 3 weeks. I was able to an ‘unmedicated’ birth (I did use nitrous oxide which was my jam!), was able to respond to my body through that, and only had 30 minutes in the last phase before 10 minutes of pushing. No perineal tears. Only minimal labial tearing (a stitch per side).

A great way to apply the oil is with capsules and having your partner apply the oil is also a great way to connect… but be careful because at this stage you can have the baby due to ummmm…. The perineum is the stretch of tissue between the genitals and anus. So, you'd sit on the ball with it pushing the tissue upward, and I'd imagine you breath so that it'll push against the resistance of the ball, strengthening the area. It'll help with getting that area used to bulging and stretching during birth, as well, I'd think. As you can tell, I'm not an expert on this specific tactic, it's simply based on things I'd learned about it. Take it with a grain of salt, lol.
