    Lee, I bought a brand new Audi Etron RS GT in Jan 2023 for £130K. I sold it in Feb 2024 for £65K! This was the best price I could achieve, even though I had only done 4300 miles. This cost me nearly £1000 per week in depreciation and over £16 per mile! They are a complete con, driven by political motives.

The problem seems to be these people who 'get bored' with their car, and feel the need to get something different every few years... And if that's the case, then why not just LEASE for 4 years, and keep swapping it in for a new model?

I’ve made my way through several Clio Trophy’s, 182, old 3 litre BMWs, old c43 AMG, type R civic . Z4 Coupe and convertible and outside I currently have a e63 BMW 650 v8. Most of them hold their value , cheap to buy, no debt and I’m too old to care what other people think of me to worry about having a new number plate. Highly recommend doing what I’m doing. When I was in business, it made sense to lease a new car every 3 to 5 years, and I would. Now I buy nice, well maintained mainly European cars, second hand. Last year I sold my 2011 turbo diesel Touareg after 5 years, paid $27k sold for $17,500 so $2k a year depreciation. I then bought a lovely 2015 Audi A6 Biturbo S line. I paid $30,500, new that car was $130,000. It looks and drives newish. It’s the only way to go.

I saw him frantically waving at me so i stopped and went to him. Luckily the window was just open wide enough i got the key. Talk about complicated i needed my pliers to turn the key and its three turns. We got him and rang his wife who came to collect him. The local recovery people could not get it onto their vehicle. So Porsche had to come out, It was the second time ot hadn't done 800 miles. Its going back they'd had enough and getting a petrol Porsche instead.

We did a trip from Sheffield to Edinburgh for work and what should have been a 4 hour trip took us 8 hours due to faulty or absent charging points. We thought long and hard about what we would have after the PS2 and have gone back to a diesel BMW M340d which goes beautifully, gives us over 500 miles per fill up and no waiting. Do I miss the PS2? yes in a lot of respects as it was a superb car. Would I get another EV? definitely not at the moment. hmmm, lets analyse. My e-NV has done 108000 miles, in that time the battery has degraded to around 80%. Currently the battery is degrading roughly 1% per 10000 miles thats been the case for the last 60000 miles. Bear in mind my van is 9 years old and the first generation of battery with 24kwh. His porsche has over 90kwh, and if that degrades similar to mine in 20 years time he will still have a battery capacity of 70kwh, hardly throw away stuff. Plus on a diesel you have DPF failures, EGR failures, injector issues, and all sorts of other really cosrly issues an EV DOESNT have. So, think again, EV`s have a use, they are not for everybody, but if the use suits, they are great, AND, if you have solar you can run it for nrearly free for 6 months a year depending on your daily usage, mine is 40 miles a day and it costs nowt for 6 month to run.

    EV batteries are expected to last up to 20 years before they need replacing, so not really so different to ICE cars. Sure range will slowly deteriorate over that time but performance on ICE cars degrades over time too with 000’s being spent on engine maintenance during its lifetime. Personally I think that the bigger issue is the pace of advancement with EV technology and the relative lack of investment in charging infrastructure. At least people have finally wised up and are not buying EV’s to save money.

  • @onederment

    @onederment

    And when an ev battery does need to be replaced it still fetches quite a high value. It's sure not a throwaway part. I suspect in 20 years there will be new cell tech that will allow your old EV to be able to do 5000 km on a 20minute charge that costs only 10000€ to upgrade. No clutch replacement, no mashed gears, no burst gaskets and crap in the oil. Seems to make perfect sense to me. Also if you just trickle charge your battery with a low charger the degradation of the battery is far less. If there are cheap second hand EVs buy one as they are easier to maintain

I bought a motorbike under two years ago, there is a new model of it out now and I went to look at one at the dealership I bought it from and they weren't interested in doing any sort of trade in as they had surplus stock of the old model still (they have 3 lol) but they want to shift the new ones and not increase the amount of old ones they are holding. It is replacement batteries that are the achilles heal of BEVs. The costs are outrageous. In many cases, they are apparently just unavailable at any price. Dealers don't have them and can't get them. There is a simple solution. Modular batteries that are interchangeable among all manufacturers. You could specify the number of battery packs you want when you buy your car. Multiply the range by 1, 2, 3 or 4 ..... and pay accordingly. The interchangeability would massively simplfy the logistics of providing replacements. Take this a step further and we could do away with charging issues. When your batteries run down, go to a service station that will swap in a fully charged set for a reasonable cost. In and out in 10 minutes. Neither will ever happen though because it just makes too much sense.

    Pump all the petrol you need in less than 10 minutes with at least twice the range and no extra drain on power when operating interior temperature controls. Running around looking for a charger and waiting for 30 or more minutes to get on your way is ridiculous.

    Lee as I see it, your only option is to drive your Tincan to London and park it there for a week or two till it gets stolen and then claim form your insurance company, yourll still end up in negative equity on your loan but at least you will be free from the car.

    Once you are 50% through the total amount payable (inclusive of interest) you can hand it back to the finance company and walk away. It’s called Voluntary Termination rights. 100% he’d be better doing that than rolling 20k negativity into another agreement to pay interest on again.

    I wish i only had a problem like this to worry about, haha! I know someone who bought a 10 year old electric car, got it for almost nothing as the batteries were getting quite low, lost a third of capacity, maybe down to half in very cold weather. A clean well kept car otherwise. But, his trips to work, to shops and usual errands, were 5 mile round trips, one charge would last well over a week, he could charge on his driveway, he was really delighted with the whole deal.. These cars really do work for some people, depending on their situation and mileage needs. For some people but not others. For them, other solutions are needed. Might be hydrogen ICE or fuel cell, or other power systems.... or a nice vintage classic petrol car that will appreciate in value! The "Swapout" system would be a good option, you buy a car but not the removable battery pack, you rent that and pay for the power it is charged with, they are removed, swapped, and refitted fully pre-charged at the service station with no wait time apart from having a machine click the battery packs out and in. The car is thousands cheaper and you don't have a dying battery a few years later to ruin your car's value..

    So if everyone gets an EV like they want, just how many charging ports at stations will be needed and will they be building waiting rooms for us to sit in so we don’t freeze our bits off? I’m disabled and every aspect of having an EV would be absolute hell for me. I doubt they’ve given the difficulties disabled people would face a moment’s thought and that makes me angry because in a lot of cases like mine, those of us with mobility issues don’t have the option to walk, cycle or use public transport so we’re utterly dependent on a car and we’re going to be quite literally driven off the road.

    I don't know who this fool is. But I'm surprised he is not sleeping under a bridge with financial stupidity like this . I assume there is/was some snobby one upmanship involved in buying an electric car ,people with more money that common sense. And now the embarrassment of being enticed into what is basically an expensive scam has come home to roost . I drive a 20 year old little peugeot which cost£ 970 2 years ago with 39000 miles on it. No repairs ever needed, uses no oil or water, boring as fxx but I know it will complete any journey. Wouldn't swop it for any fancy car ,electric or not . People are being duped into parting with large sums of money, this is the end of the road for EVs.

    Basically a mobile phone you drive around in. The new model instantly makes the old ones obsolete and resale is about 10% - 20% of the purchase price. Slightly better, but that's the general idea as you say.

    can i ask a question? so like,. a mobile phone has a battery health indicator in settings. so my old iphone of 2 years old, when charged at 100% was actually only at 89% of its possible deteriorating capacity. do you have a way of checking your battery health in your car, or via diagnostics kit or tester,. it would be interesting to know how much your car has lost in true battery health and if when charged to 100%, how much you have actually charged against its origional battery health when brand new. this would also be a great indicator of added depreciation of the cars true lifespan. even so,. it appears that if the battery is 65k to replace,. obv you car is worth less than the battery and by all accounts, at the depreciation rate id est 6 years before it reaches less than 10k to buy, / sell if the battery isnt already 50% dead . one thing is for damn sure,. There will never be a classic car status on an electric car. lol,. more like a future nostalgia cult following.

    > one thing is for damn sure,. There will never be a classic car status on an electric car. Talk about a totally ridiculous prediction. There are people who collect classic tanks. There will definitely be plenty of people who collect old electric cars - they aren't even expensive to maintain. Batteries will be much cheaper in future and easy to swap.

    I remember about 10 years ago I went to a Car Exhibition where they were selling EV. I went up to an Audi Stand and asked them how much a replacement Battery was for it, but they claimed they never knew. (I asked because I'd heard they were £25,000 to replace) All they would tell me is the cells should last up to 25 years! SHOULD and UP TO means nothing in the real world! I stayed with petrol and will do until there is no more petrol being sold!
