My DIY 2005-2021 Nissan Frontier Automatic Transmission Service

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On today’s episode of DIYWILLY, we will do a much needed transmission fluid and filter change. The truck has about 170,000 miles on it and we are the second owner and have no idea if it has ever been changed since new. When the fluid drains in to the bucket, the color is near black and well over due for a change. The vehicle owners manual suggest transmission service at every 30k miles interval.
So follow along as we continue to improve and repair our 2008 NISSAN Frontier 4x4 Crew cab.

    Thanks man, appreciate the video. Just something I learned from somebody a while ago which was really helpful - when pouring quart bottles, pour with the side that doesn't have the spout down. It feels counterintuitive, but you can tilt the bottle almost level before fluid comes out. Really helps with hitting the funnel. Thanks again for the video and your time.

    Little update here I ended up doing it successfully. I don’t have a garage that fits my truck and there’s hills everywhere here so I had to do it on a little flat-ish spot in my yard and even it out best I could with rocks😂. Anyway I got about 5 quarts out it was a little below that on the bucket but I spilt a good amount on myself so I just put all 5 quarts in. Dip stick looked good on cold and hot. Haven’t had any issues and it is shifting a lot better than it was. Something I noticed I’m not sure if you did but all those bolts on the screen have numbers on them so I just took a picture on my phone which made it real easy putting back. Those studs with the nuts were a little odd but made reinstalling it easy.

    This would apply to the 2005-2019 Frontier. The 2020 & up Frontier has the new 3.8L engine and the 9 speed transmission which are different from the previous model. On the 5speed transmission there is really no need to drop the pan, or mess with the "filter" on a normal service. Regular drain and fill service is all those transmissions should ever need if they are maintained. They don't have a real filter in them, it is really only a screen in there to catch any large debris. I guess if you feel better cleaning out the pan and the magnets, then fine, but I don't see any real value in the extra work during regular maintenance. I bought my 2019 Frontier new, and I did it's first transmission fluid drain & fill at 20,000 miles (as well as the transfer case and both differentials) and I plan to do that every 20,000 - that is the "severe service" schedule in the manual. I don't do what I would consider severe service usage with my truck, but I feel like following that maintenance schedule is added cheap insurance that will help my truck last a long time. The transmission fluid at 20,000 miles was not noticeably dark. Also, to check the fluid level the truck has to be running & at operating temperature. Cycle through all of the gear shift positions. check the level in park, and you have to rotate the dipstick 180 degrees so that the screw hole in the dipstick is opposite of where it would normally sit - if you don't do that you will not get an accurate reading on the fluid level. The Matic-S fluid is almost clear looking on the dipstick and can be difficult to read at times.

    I bought mine used and the fluid was not changed in years. I did the drain and fill and the transmission did not like it at first. I actually got a code. I waited a few weeks and drained and filled again. The transmission eventually stopped sending codes as it got accustomed to clean fluid. I drain and fill one a year now regardless of the mileage that was added.

    I wouldn’t bother changing the screen next time. Just do a simple drain and fill. As the fluid was so bad you might want to do it again in a few thousand miles. I do mine every 15-25k miles. It takes me less time than an oil change at this point. I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF as is is significantly cheaper and has been used by many people including myself with excellent results on these trucks.

    Hello Brent, Yes I wanted to see inside and check the condition of things. The screens/filters are not expensive but yes agree that next time at 25k-30k will be a drain and refill. • @gibbsmeedat3954

    @gibbsmeedat3954

    7 ай бұрын

    My guess is the manual is being extra cautious. see how clean his screen was at 13:36 when it came out and how dirty the fluid was? That means it's not really filtering the contaminants; it just catches anything really big. If the fluid comes out reasonably clean and there aren't transmission problems, there's no reason to change it. plus, it's a screen so you can just clean with brake cleaner and replace. @@nicholasheuermann9221

I am considering not bothering with the "filter" as it is just a screen, and if it doesn't appear from the bottom that that screen is not full of debris, just leave it alone and put on the new pan, gasket and fill her back up with fluid. @@DIYWilly I bought a 2007 Frontier a couple of years ago. Immediately after I bought it I took it in for service and check up to see what I had got and what needed fixing. I asked the shop (Nissan of Corona) to change the trans fluid. I swapped the radiator to see and avoid the dreaded SMOD and did not see any sign of transmission fluid in the coolant. The Nissan shop warned me that changing the trans fluid with so many miles on it (about 149k) might actually cause problems. They were right. About 5000 miles later the transmission started slipping and I ended up having it rebuilt. YMMV but my lesson learned was either change the fluid per the service intervals, or leave it alone until the transmission needs overhaul/repair.

    @@petereastwood7868 Well that’s one way to look at it. out of sight out of mind I guess. If it works don’t fix it. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a great comment..

    @@DIYWilly Now that my trans has been rebuilt I plan on changing the fluid per the book. But the warning the Nissan shop gave me was for a high mileage but never flushed transmission. I don’t put a lot of miles on my truck so it will be a few years before I need to flush the trans. BTW - I just finished the secondary timing chain tensioner shoe repair and I watched your video on the subject (and others) several times to see what I was getting into. Helped a lot. Thanks. Between cold weather and waiting on parts it took me a ridiculously long time, but it all works well now. It’s a great little truck.

    That’s great new that you replaced the tensioner guides. Sounds like your taking good care of the Frontier?
