My Daily Grind: Making a high quality and strong 2x72 Belt Grinder
Ғылым және технология
Here's a making of video of my 2x72 Belt grinder. This project took me a long time but I took the time to make quality parts for this very solid (85 kg!!) machine. 2KW motor, horizontal and vertical position and adjustable table. I'm sure this machine will last a long time and I'm looking forward to use this grinder for future projects. Please subscribe to see my future projects and follow me on Instagram (Bart Harkema #Bartsmetalwork) for my daily grind.

Small suggestions: Please move the welder away from the iron dust next to the grinder. Thank you very much for the inspiration with the height-adjustable table.
Best design i saw. Couple of sugesstions 1. Place sparks separator near down rear roller (plate close as possble to belt with 30-45 degrees to it) to turn sparks down. 2. Place main sparks "trash can". Under front down roller box with water with easy dismount. It will not holds all sparks but even if it will catch 70% of it - it makes your workshop cleaner and much easy to cleanup. Good luck and thanks. Like and Subcribe :)
This video taught me 2 tricks to unbend or stretch metal. Thanks for that!
Beautiful design, love the attention to detail.
That hammering for getting 90deg. Just fantastic! Thank you!
Not many guys use a dial indicator, pantograph or shaper to make their belt grinders but was DELIGHTED to watch your serious metalworking skills. Beautiful design and execution!!!

I enjoyed watching your movie. You showed a decent and very careful job: smooth welds, elements perfectly polished and sandblasted. For me, the icing on the cake are brass washers and a beautifully engraved ID plate. A very good varnish on carefully prepared metal allows to believe that your grinder will actually work for many years, as you expect. I was particularly delighted with the use of cold forging to achieve exactly 90 degrees - I buy this idea gratefully. Compliments from Poland, your grinder is very distinguished by the quality of workmanship. :)))
Interesting to see all the different machines used in this project and thanks for including how the welds warp metal and the different ways of correcting it.

A very nice machine. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Really Beautiful Work! Some of the best TIG welding I've seen! Very Nice! I'd LOVE to have a nice 2 x 72 belt grinding rig like that!! Congrats!!
Metal warping from welding was a constant cause of stress while I was building my 2x72. At one point I even threw a chipping hammer putting a large dent in the side of my table saw 😔. I loved your solution to the problem, I only wish I had thought of that. Beautiful machine and great video 👍

Hi Bart and a good day to u. I'm a Senoir Master ASE and have fabbed race cars, race quads, custom equipment of all sorts and in my mind am an excellent fab guy. The best compliment that I can give u is that I would "trust" you to make any part I may need but was unable to do. I am currently rehabbing a spinal and SI joint fusion and would have zero fear of having u make something I need and would even be ok with u making any mods to it u may deam necessary. This is coming from a person that more often than not has scrapped parts I'm not happy with. Great work as always Bart!!!
Nice, well done. Just wanted to say that flame treating that plate would also have allowed you to flatten or straighten it to the desired position, but stringer welds in the right place as you demonstrated did it too! Thanks
What an outstanding build. I love your attention to detail and you document everything really well. Seems like an almost perfect design. 👍

Yes, and the angle grinder works great to. It looks like a hacked DIY tool but I use it a lot. Even know a have the big 2x72 ready, the smaller one is great for small work.
Beautiful craftsmanship. I haven't seen a shaper or a pantograph since my days in the Navy (1960's)! Wonderful tools, nice to see someone still using them.

You're welding like a god
Beautiful design and fabrication. In one shot, you were cleaning your metal prior to welding. I saw what looked like brake cleaner in the background. I hope you're not using the brake cleaner for weld prep. I saw a story about a guy who did that and all that horrific heath problems he got from inhaling the phosgene gas created by the combination of brake cleaner and argon gas. Love the fix for the warped plate.

Thanks for the compliment and tip about the brake cleaner. I did use it but not a lot and will use something different in the future. Anything you can recommend?

@@bartharkemametalworks2299 I use mostly acetone or occasionally lacquer thinner and haven't had any problems. They both evaporate so fast that I go thru a lot, but switching over to one of those chemical squeeze bottles and applying to a rag instead of the metal helped consumption quite a bit. I was shocked when I saw that story. I use brake cleaner and I weld; just by chance I never combined the two. The poor guy had all kinds of side effects - I want to say vision loss, kidney failure and on and on. I'm going to see if I can find a link to that story and try to post it here for you and your other subscribers (I subbed after this video). Your fabrication really is outstanding.

I can't find the original story I saw, but a quick google of "welding brake cleaner" or "phosgene" will turn up many results. I just read one where a guys buddy died from it.
