My Chronic Illness Story - Chef Julie Yoon

What I haven't shared with you is that I had been struggling with chronic illness for at least the past two years. I was either too sick or busy going to a bunch of doctors to even find time to film this video. As you know, I shared that I had Bell's palsy while pregnant, and when I think about the timeline, some of my illness I've been dealing with may be correlated to that. But although it's getting better now, it's still ongoing and nothing has truly been figured out yet. I now believe some of it may be related to stress or anxiety, so I'm taking active steps to try to manage that better. I also just wanted to update you on where I've been during my year long break from KZread. I hope you noticed, because we sure missed you! Hoping for brighter days ahead and learning to deal with my "new normal." Leave a comment if you can relate if you're going through your own journey...you're not alone! It's wonderful to see you again. So thrilled that you are making videos and discussing real concerns and issues that do not have quick fixes! It takes a while to unravel and heal from multiple physical and emotional traumas. I can relate to that. I've always loved the vlog format and authenticity. Also...looooove my t-shirt! Wait a minute...you bought a t-shirt? I'm so sorry I didn't realize! Maybe it wasn't obvious because the customer information didn't say "mpuppybreath" haha! Thank you so much and we appreciate the support! Yay! ❤Glad you like it. You have always been a part of our Yooniverse and we couldn't appreciate you more! You're right that some issues don't always have easy fixes. I'm still trying to figure it out daily....yup I take at least one part of my day to try to research or do some sleuthing based on what I ate or did that day. Thankful that you always appreciate the vlog format and authenticity. It's a lot more freeing to be that way. I just didn't share earlier because I was literally suffering for months and wasn't healthy enough to film. It's nice to be back! Thankful to be back! ❤

@@mpuppybreath I felt like I needed to insert those clips. I have more from my time there and I'm wondering if I should compile those clips into another vlog or two. I'll have to look back at my footage - it was months ago! So thankful whenever I get to spend time with my parents. I don't see them that often. Glad you could see their hearts in those short little clips.

Julie, thank you for sharing! I haven't watched your youtube in forever but so glad that I did. Your symptoms are so similar (but different too) to my ollder sister who had her first child almost 3 years ago via c-section. Crazy amounts of vertigo, ruled out Meniere's, elimination diet, neurology consult after consult. She has cut out so much from her diet and still has underlying fear / anxiety that her dizziness will return. Will be praying for you!

I have addisons disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis. When you talked about the vertigo or dizziness, I thought about addisons disease, took me 10 years of doctor visits to figure out. If you have low sodium have the doctors look at you adrenal gland function. Be happy and keep it together, there are always folks worse off than you.

I'm sorry to hear you have multiple health issues you are dealing with...it must be so hard. I'm thankful for the tip about addisons disease and the dizziness. It's something to look into for sure. And the weird thing is that when I went into the hospital for Bell's palsy, they told me I had low sodium! I am definitely keeping my head up through this journey and just hope that maybe sharing my story might help others to feel less alone.

Dealing with chronic illness myself I'm very grateful that you shared your story. After random brain aneurysm, that went undiagnosed for 3 months I was dealing with debilitating migraines for a time. What resonated with me was the fear of doing something that will trigger them and feelings of loneliness or being misunderstood. It's hard to deal with something that's only visible on the inside and can come and go any minute. Hope you will find diagnosis or a solution and I wish you and your family lots of health!

I am so sorry to hear about your aneurysm and migranes. I'm hoping you don't get anymore and the migranes start to dissipate. I myself have just recently learned about aneurysms because unfortunately my mother-in-law had one too, so I had to recently go to all the specialists with her and learn more about them. It must feel lonely and I can imagine you feel misunderstood. It is difficult to seem fine on the outside, but have so much going on in the inside. I'm hoping you feel heard and seen and know that you're not alone. Wishing you and your family health as well. Thanks for sharing your story ❤.

Definitely! There were some dark days especially when I'd be lying in bed, and I felt like I was spinning and I'd just be crying. Or when I had bad reflux symptoms and felt like I couldn't even breathe. I'd run outside in the cold and just try to catch my breath. But all the while, my family was there...either physically helping me like Joe, or being helpless themselves, like Taylor. It started happening while Taylor was so little, and sometimes I'd be home alone with her and there'd be no one else to take care of her if I didn't pull myself together. So in a way, she helped me to muster through it - even on those tough days...because I had to.

Oh Julie, As I’m listening to your story, I can relate to everything you mentioned. Although it was more than 10 years ago, I suffered from GERD as well. I went and did exactly what you did-visiting the cardiologist (stress test, EKG), the gastroenterologist (endoscopy, colonoscopy) primary doctor etc. I could not believe the doctors’ diagnosis because I was doing what they said and still didn’t feel better. I think that constant worry along with the stress, panic attacks was such a vicious circle. GERD caused me to lose 20lbs., as I was trying to follow their diet suggestions. Panic attacks were rampant-I remember being in the parking lot at Woodfield to drop off the children and saw an ambulance, thinking I would need to be taken away if I could not get myself together….. Happy to say that things are better….mostly gone. I would love to be in touch with you….please DM me if you’d like to talk.

Thanks for sharing your story! So crazy that we had parallel lives and suffered from the same vicious cycle as you say. Isn't it weird that we go through all these doctors and nothing helps? It makes you feel so alone and helpless...not to mention frustrated. The panic attacks can't be helped in a way because you're just waiting to feel awful at any moment...I'm so glad to hear this was 10 years ago and you're doing much better now. That gives me hope! I'm doing better too but I had some symptoms even today- of course while I'm out driving with Taylor. Had to pull over and deal with it but luckily, they went away after some time. Thanks for offering to talk or keep in touch. So sweet of you!

Thank you for sharing. I have Multiple Sclerosis (diagnosed in 2012) and it can be a struggle to share with others or tell people how you feel or what is going on. Many people do not understand that fatigue for those with chronic illness is a nightmare which no coffee or amount of sleep seems to help. My best advice is to figure out your triggers (if you can) and give yourself a lot of grace. Much love to you my friend. And hoping you have many more good days than bad days!

I feel your pain. Back in 2010 I was diagnosed with Meneres Disease. It was awful, I was miserable. It robbed me of so much. I’ve even had injections. And reading about being dizzy doesn’t help much. lol. But I’m going to tell you the truth, I’m not sick anymore. I began to seek God and not bc I was sick. I grew up in church and God had been dealing with me. I began to pray and seek God. And in fact, I had just went through a couple of of weeks were my sickness I returned with a vengeance. But I had been seeking God for other reasons than needing healing. I’m Christian by the way. And I started noticing I was getting better and better and soon enough within a week or so it was all gone. I was sick for 8 years. Jesus delivered me. So I took a lot of meds too and even had injections. I couldn’t travel. It controlled me life. I went to doctor after doctor. I was told by a good specialist that one day there would be a doctor who could help me. And boy, was he right. Jesus is known as The Great Physician. And I’ll be honest, this happened to me. And now at 5 years later I am dizziness free. I am delivered!

Wow what a testimony that you were delivered from sickness...especially dizziness from the disease! Thank you for sharing. I am Christian too, so I truly appreciate hearing about this real life personal miracle. What a blessing and praise to hear that you are fully healed after all that suffering! At some points during my journey, especially the hardest days where the symptoms were unbearable, I definitely felt like God was ignoring my prayers or turning His back on me, leaving me forgotten. And I couldn't figure out why He would let me to continue to suffer physically, day after day, especially as a mom of a newborn and 6 year old, and especially when I was already suffering in other areas of my life, including financially - but that's for another story time. But I'm starting to realize that it's not like we are ever promised a life without suffering or pain. And like you, I believe God is still good and He got me THROUGH it not around it. I've come out the other side more grateful for little things and the good days or good moments...even though I still have the bad days. The journey isn't done yet and one day I hope He will fully deliver me from sickness like He has done for you!

I did get tested for gluten intolerance and it wasn't that. To this day, I don't know exactly what it is. I do have GERD, but the dizziness went undiagnosed. They said it was an attack on my vestibular system and that's about it. I'm thinking a lot of my symptoms are also triggered by stress, but I can't be too sure. All I do now is try to prevent those symptoms from starting and I try to change some things in my lifestyle. Luckily, the dizziness has been kept at bay, but unfortunately the acid reflux stayed.

No, I wasn't diagnosed with vertigo. I forgot to mention but I also went to an ENT and physical therapist and both of them ruled it out. I actually had a different kind of dizziness where I felt like I was rocking on a boat. The physical therapist I went to actually specialized in dizziness, so that helped me to retrain my brain, and it was what helped me the most. I do notice that on days where allergies are high, I start to get little pangs of dizziness again. I'm sorry your sister suffers from vertigo... it sounds so miserable. My friend has it too. Hoping she finds remedies to help her through it.

Great advice... for a time, Joe and I did do intermittent fasting, but we didn't keep up with it haha. But I'm sure it does reset your body in some way. And I agree with healthier nutrient dense food...fiber, and foods that are easy to digest. I do think it has to do with my stress as well and I'm trying to get a better handle on that. I agree that I haven't found the right doctor yet. I did see my primary care, a neurologist, GI, and cardiologist - but you're right that they mostly try to cure the symptoms and not figure out the source. Good word and reminder. Hoping I can figure it out soon!
