my career path: every salary I've earned in my 20's
Hello! Welcome to another sit-down video where I go through every job and wage/salary I’ve had in my 20's so far. In making this, I wanted to contribute to the conversation around salary transparency and hopefully inspire others to get more comfortable talking about financial topics. The book I mentioned, Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap, was a huge catalyst in my interest in financial literacy, and I encourage you to check it out!

Talking about money can feel vulnerable- and I definitely feel a bit vulnerable in sharing this! But it’s also important to remember that the amount of money you have/make in no way correlates to your value as a person.
Thank you so much for joining me, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

I have immense respect for people that grinded through the sub $10/hr wages. Something most people won't even consider nowadays.
this was probably the most normal salary progression I have seen. thank you.

This was really interesting to watch as a college student starting to enter the work world, thank you for sharing! I quite agree that salaries and job progression are not discussed enough even though these conversations are very beneficial for those with less financial education.

What did you study in college, only if you don't mind sharing? And how much have you found it impacted your career path?

Hey Julia! Thanks for watching, I’m really glad you found it interesting :) In college I majored in English language and literature. I originally chose this because I was considering going to law school (then I changed my mind) and I think it was still beneficial in the sense that it helped me refine a lot of the skills that I use for my job today (research and writing being the biggest). I think the most important thing is learning how to market the skills you build in college to future employers! Let me know if you have more questions I’m always happy to answer!
Thank you for the transparency! This is always inspiring

I started at 12 an hour in 2014 in high school. Currently I’m at 28.90 an hour. 62k net a year working half the year at factory 12 hour shifts. I don’t even know what I want to do anymore. I just want to retire but I’m only 26 years old.

I totally feel you. It's really frustrating to have to center life around work. A big part of why I was inspired to start doing youtube videos was because I wanted to feel inspired creatively again after realizing that no matter how hard I worked at my job it was only going to do so much for me, and I was going to have to find fulfillment, purpose, and joy elsewhere. It's a journey, and not an easy one, but I'm wishing you the best :)
love your transparency!
Nice video! You chose a job you preferred rather than chasing money, which is actually a good thing to do from a mental health perspective
7:57 “our company doesn’t do merit-based raises” What a scam. Why would anyone work hard for such a company?
@sabrayne

Agreed! I used to put in so much effort...now I give the bare minimum at work and put my energy towards things that I actually care about.

I feel that most companies don't do "merit-based raises" even if they say they do. Especially in the tech or defense contract sectors - it's all about who you know and how much rapport you have built with your network. The linkedin mill can help you find those jobs if you disregard all the recruiters spamming you with s1ave wage positions.
would love more finance videos in the future !
Thanks Sabrina! Inspirational :)

Appreciate the transparency and admire your drive to want to keep growing. It's good to be reminded that there is always somebody out there that is going through similar things.

Appreciate the salary transparency 👍
Great to watch this as someone a couple of decades into my career - we never had such transparency or information when I was starting out. Everything was just opaque and money was not to be discussed. Thanks for creating, I have no idea why the algorithm put this in front of me but was amazing to watch!

Trading time for money is never a great idea. For me I learned to make money independently from a job. So where am I today? Well my current base hourly rate is $1,105.40 per hour and is increasing by around $50-100 more per hour per month. Just listening to you I say hanging with your boyfriend isn’t doing much for you. My girlfriend has learned a lot from me and now also lives financially independent. So who you hang with can have a big influence on your life and financial success. Don’t settle for working time for money. You will never be wealthy. ❤
Nice how tough is content writing? Can you show me a day in a life video to get a better perspective? :) I am currently looking for a job in this dreadful software development market lol so far havent found anything so I ended up going back to study.
debra morgan hopping onto youtube??
Id be interested in your boyfriend’s salary and total household income. Expenses and take home pay/limitations to your current financial situation. 50k seems very low for New York.
@sabrayne
Ай бұрын
Yea, I should have made it more clear in the video but I no longer live in New York! Even with 3 roommates, living in New York was very expensive at this salary, which (among other things) was a reason we moved back to Michigan after a year. Hoping to move back one day when I get a higher-paying job, though :)
Life is hard rn
Why dopeople like remote jobs ? It's not that good for networking at early careers.
@sabrayne
29 күн бұрын
It's not for everyone but I honestly love it! It's given me the flexibility to move around without being tied to one location and travel while working. The networking looks different, but I've also made amazing lifelong friends at my job and have continued to network in different spaces, both online and in person.

At 3% raise per year, you got to work 30+ years to double your salary, then again your job have a salary cap or the company will just get rid of you these days. Tech jobs are the worst, at 35-40’s years old, your career is at its end, companies will laid you off and no one wants to hire you because you’re “old” and too expensive to be hire.
@ericgrube9954

lol, your career isn't over at 40 in tech, not sure where you're getting that from. Senior/Staff engineers, team leads, management, all great places to be when you're 40 as a software engineer. Also, play your cards right in tech and you might be able to retire by around 40 anyways.
no way ur living in manhattan at those salaries. something dont add up
@sabrayne
Ай бұрын
Haha, yeah, I don't live there anymore! It was definitely a challenge living there at that salary, and a lot of my income went towards rent. I was also living with 3 roommates (one of them was my boyfriend) and that was absolutely the only way I was able to make it work for the time that I was there. I apologize for not making this part clear in the video!
Can you make more financial videos including like expenses and maybe your bf too included as a whole 😂

Strong and independent are earning more than average m a l e, you moids can’t cope with that Lmao
i worked 0 part time jobs in college out of state all 5 years and used my family credit card to get doordash for every meal, gopuff, weed, gambling and 2000 dollar per month rent and 250 thousand tuition all covered by my parents...
If a guy in his mid-twenties was a barista, women would laugh at him and call themselves ’strong independent women’ for doing it
