My Cancer Press Tier List

As was reported might be the case, it turns out that the first day after chemo is pretty OK, but then it gets progressively worse until day 5 or 6. I'm now on day 7 and feeling OK. I've had many (but not all!) of the expected side effects, but my appetite has been good, which is very good for the quality of life! Glad to be through the worst of the first treatment, but obviously I've still got a long way to go. I wouldn't want everyone to think that Day 7 is indicative of how you feel while you're doing chemo...if you had seen me on Day 3 I would have been 100% horizontal.
I hear it tends to get a little worse every time (though I've got some tips for how to maybe make a few things hit a little less hard!) Really glad I was feeling good enough to make this video! It was nice to do something normal.
Thanks y'all.
Hank

    So this is pretty funny to me because one of my spouse's co-workers was thought to have lymphoma but actually has TB. They all work in radiology so when something looks like one thing and is another it is rapidly shared news. THEN my 17yo went in for testing, we were going "Come TB!" Until the kid pointed out that he would be in isolation if he has TB so we were back to "Come on Hodgkin's Lymphoma!" So I am here for the comments and resources because my kid has to start Chemo shortly. And I can't find a good book on what to expect! Seriously, how is a nerdy librarian supposed to work under these conditions!?!

    LOVE this. As a cancer veteran who just got re-upped, I have learned that attitude really helps. Maybe it is just because attitude is contagious, and those of us in the patient role in the cancer movie set the tone for the rest of the cast. It also makes it clear that we are actively involved in the process and it isn't just raining down on us. The score card is brilliant. My sister in law is battling cancer right now, a rare form, and I have to say Hank's videos have been very uplifting for all of us. You need to really look at what you have said here. Turning the illness into profiteering? Do you know how much good Hank has done for other people in this world? And if you only had any idea how little money KZread videos actually make, you would be mind blow. It's not what you think it is, He's not "getting rich" off of KZread videos. He's not begging for sympathy, he's telling HIS story, and it's HIS story to tell. This is Hank's outlet for dealing with his cancer. He is allowed to make videos, and talk about it, and he's HELPING so many other people also going through it. You realize some people with cancer, NEED to hear from others who have it. Some families going through this (like ours), is THANKFUL that he is sharing his story and doing his best to stay positive and educate people about it. Your Toxic negativity about what he chooses to do is sad. I get it, you are hurting because your parent is going through this, but you need to find a way to deal with your thoughts and feelings, so that your family can better move forward and be positive. Cancer sucks. No matter what. It just sucks. Hank is doing amazing things here, and he's an amazing person who has given back to so many. I think this is one of the funniest videos any person could ever make in response to getting a cancer diagnosis, this is absolutely gold. If this was a stand up comedian he would make an entire half hour special out of this where they going depth about each article. You did it in a condensed 5 minutes and saved every one time, this is exactly why you and your brother are some of the best content creators the world will ever know. I wish you a speedy recovery, and I definitely recommend picking up a GameCube and a couple of games from the early 2000s, NBA Street is very good, along with Star wars rogue squadron 2, and the original animal crossing. And if you want a narrative focused game I would highly recommend Paper Mario the thousand Year door or any installment of the paper Mario franchise for that matter.

    I've been fighting cancer for 20 years (CLL) or a third of my life. Fortunately bio technology has kept moving forward and has bailed me out every time I fell out of remission. This year was the hardest with a stem cell transplant which appears to have worked very well. My journey has extended from MD Anderson in Houston to Fred Hutch in Seattle. My first recommendation for those with cancer is to find the experts that specialize in that particular disease. I have been fortunate to have been treated by some of the best leukemia doctors in the world. My second recommendation is to manage your treatment. Doctors are very busy people and can't keep on top of every patient. You need to be pro-active in how you approach treatment. I've been a big fan of your work for years and wish you the best in the future.

Also, happy for Tilda to get recognized for writing a really thoughtful story, possibly because they're engaged with the community. Same! I got started on SciShow before vlogbrothers, back when Hank was presenting everything, so he's the main brother in my head. I guess lots of people know John first from his YA novels. But I also think a lot of the "John Green" mentions come from article writers feeling like they have to explain the brothers in "vlogbrothers" after mentioning the channel's name, which they kinda have to mention since it's where the announcement was posted. (Of course this only applies to the articles where John is mentioned a couple paragraphs in, not the ones where he's in the title.)

    Hank, 3 years ago you did a video called "The Sudden Obliteration of Expectation" that was so influential to the way that I deal with my anxiety and the rapid change that characterizes young adulthood that I felt the need to share it with my dad. It changed the way that I approach life so profoundly that I routinely go back and rewatch it, because it's just that big. In the two videos that you have done surrounding your cancer diagnosis, you've hit on something similar again. The strangest combination of perfectly timed humor and genuine serious understanding and so many other little things is just... Exactly what I've been needing right now. Thank you for being the "adult" [scare quotes not intended] in the room for me over and over again. We learned a lot about Leukemia and Lymphoma. We learned that we could get through anything, together. Remember during treatment week to be kind to yourself. Oh, if you get the metallic taste from chemo, orange juice I'm told still tastes great. On the off treatment week, Remember not to overdo it. Everyone loves you and only wants you to be well, so take care of you. Use your time to discover something new. I sincerely hope that you will be telling people in 13 years that you're that many, cancer free. ❤

    Quick warning: Stardew Valley is *not* bummer-free, because some of the special cutscenes you get with the characters can pack quite a punch! Shane and Alex are two examples of characters who have some really sad storylines, so watch out with them. (There might be more; I haven't seen every scene!) In general it's a comfy game, but I didn't put it on my recommendations list in the comments for the cancer sharing video as I figured the storylines for some characters would be a bit much right now.

  • @sarahmihuc3993

    @sarahmihuc3993

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep! I have seen pretty much all the scenes, and I agree that Shane is probably the darkest storyline. For no-bummers, I'd suggest sticking with Leah, Maru, or Emily, or Elliott, Sebastian or Harvey. All the stories have slight mentions of past struggles, but these should be manageable. (For example, Leah's past struggle is problems with an ex. Maru's I think has to do with being conflicted about moving away to follow her dreams iirc?) For a similar level of light, almost no bummers, I would also recommend Pokemon Scarlet/Violet btw. Overall it's a very positive game, just some mentions of past bullying and there is a sad old dog who gets saved/healed by the protagonists, but the first scene with him is a bit tough (you can avoid this storyline by not doing any of the herb side quests). And lastly, for a less-bummer version of Stardew Valley, I recommend all the Harvest Moon games that it is based on. They generally have zero bummers iirc, maybe a little bit if you follow certain storylines but less than Stardew Valley. I think most people agree the first 3 games for N64/GameCube/GameBoy are best (and can surely be found on an emulator for free), although all of them are good including the Rune Factory spinoffs, there are several Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games available on the Switch. (Rune factory has more of a fantasy world vibe and focus on killing monsters but still the same core concepts of farming, friendships and romance as Harvest Moon)

    My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2006. I was 11. It was one of the scariest things I've ever been through (the realization that your parents aren't invincible and won't be here forever always is), and I can only imagine what it was like for him when he was told that he probably wouldn't make it until the end of the year, but I remember him making jokes like this. It was more for the rest of us than it was for him, I think, but it helped immensely as we moved through his treatment and adapted our lives for cancer stuff (and he's been in partial remission for about 15 years now, yay!). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I appreciate you and John comforting all of us and giving us funny, bittersweet updates. I think all of us would understand if you didn't, but boy howdy does humour make facing uncertainty more bearable! I admire y'all for it. I hope you're doing okay and that in due time you'll get to "reveal" that you're in complete remission!

    @@Embersfire542 Someone I know was diagnosed with stage IV liver cancer (don't know the exact type) that had completely ravaged her. She was given a terminal diagnosis with less than 6 months to live. That was over 15 years ago. She's been in remission for more than a decade and was recently able to recieve a liver transplant. Looking at her today, you would never know she was sick. It's important to be prepared for the harsh realities cancer can bring, but miracles can and do happen. In the present day, depending on the cancer, remission or even cure is becoming less of a blind hope and more of an expectation. Best of luck to you, your mom, and your family!
