MY BIGGEST WEAKNESS: I F#@%ING SUCK AT PLAYING FAST.

Музыка

Do i wish i could burn and shred like all my favorite players? F#@% yeah. Will I ever be able to? At this point, I sincerely f#@%ing doubt it. But I still love playing guitar. Even if guitar is f#@%ing hard! @jeremyversusjazz

    first time on your channel, I don't know if you want advice but my being a teacher for 37 years makes it hard not to give it 🙂. First you're not too old (old habits can be hard to break but they can be), and the type of pick doesn't really matter (I used to buy the cheapest ones from clearance bins for many years). Also there is no one way you need to pick you can alternate, economy, fingerpick but there are things that will make you better whichever type of picking you use. First go even slower there is no speed that is too slow when learning what matters is perfecting your technique (an ongoing battle for everyone) first get a simple idea like a basic sequence, a really good one for intermediate/advanced players is 123432 just meaning start on any note and play through a scale using those numbers for example in Am A-B-C-D-C-B then repeat (of course can do easier ones if a beginner) then while you're repeating it without stopping (it's important to learn to fix your technique while playing) force yourself to relax (this is where going slow helps) then focus on each hand individually making sure your pick is moving as little as possible barely clearing the strings & your left hand is barely lifting off the frets. Efficiency is the key too speed not moving faster (trying to play faster usually results in more tension and actually makes you slower) if you're moving an inch and can go to half an inch or you're already moving half an inch & can go to 1/4 you have cut your distance moved in half in both cases. Now think of this in another way if we're going to run a race and you have to run 100 meters & I only have to run 50 even if you're significantly faster you will probably lose the race because again shortening your distance gets you there faster. Only speed up when you can stay relaxed and efficient, and then only move up one metronome marking (about 4 bpm) and repeat. Also always isolate anything hard and simplify it till it's easy to play even if it means only doing the picking without the left hand or only doing a couple notes then add the complexity back in. (I do have videos that go into more detail if you want to check them out) either way I hope this helps 👍🙂

    @@jeremyversusjazz There is no set percentage but you want to retrain your playing so it's more something you want practice some drills/scales whatever with good habits but also become aware while playing & correct yourself when you see yourself tensing up for example try to relax or doing a large motion try to correct it all of your playing so this is where at first it can take some time. because if you're only aware of your technique when doing an exercise but then go back to old habits the rest of the time, you will not improve much. So most of the work is done in the first couple weeks of trying to change your technique so just do it till it becomes the new normal. Then it's just a matter of continuing to refine it and maintain good habits it will be a gradual change but you should see small improvements fairly quick & when I was saying slow down I mean like half the speed you were going then bring it back up over a period of weeks but keep in mind even if you only get 10 bpm faster a week after a month that's a significant amount 👍

    @@ericnaylorguitar do you think that Barry Harris 5432 pattern is not a good thing to work on I like it because it involves string skipping it’s got it. It’s from it’s also just a usable piece of vocabulary.

  • @ericnaylorguitar

    @ericnaylorguitar

    @@jeremyversusjazz it's fine for vocabulary work (and later speed) but if working to max speed start with very simple things that you use all the time like just simple scale runs that involve string changing, direction changing, shifting build up speed with simple things then start adding in work with arpeggios or intervals always focus on one thing at a time so if it's speed you don't want to complex of other things distracting you like string skips or complex left hand fingerings at first

    @@jeremyversusjazz 1) 🤔 Actually both, the cutaway of the babe and the coconut picks. I might wanna try those out. 2) Shred Guitar: A Complete System for the Rock Improviser by Paul Hanson. It's coming in tonight, so I haven't went through it yet. So don't quote me on how well it works as of yet. I've recently completed a book that teaches me the basics of the fretboard, and I'm getting greedy and going after playing speed now. I've wanted more speed ever since I started guitar, and I'm hoping this book will give it to me. 3) No prob! Keep up the good work!

    I'm not great at playing fast either, but sometime I need to be. I've tried a ton of picks and the one I landed on is the blue chip td 40 with speed bevel. It's thick enough to play fast single note lines, but not too thick where it gets hung up on the string and thin enough to play fast funk rhythm and 16th note triplets

    This is going to sound stupid, but I notice you groove with the guitar physically when you played the slow bits. Well it's all just a dance and you'll reach a point where you physically can't keep up with the metronome. Until you let your whole body feel the tempo your picking won't relax enough to allow a clean motion. I have found that more you feel the music the more free your right hand will get and the more locked your timing is. It's hard to explain but I liken the idea to playing drums. You need limb independence and synchronization both while keeping time with your core. If this makes any sense at all to you good luck. If not good luck anyways, guitar is definitely fucking hard...sometimes.

    I can see that when play at a comfortable or slow speed, your picking hand is moving way too much. When you go fast, It's clear you are more conscious of efficiency of movement but it's not how you play normally making it feel twice as hard. Try to focus on that efficiency of movement when playing slow stuff, it then just comes naturally as you speed up.
