Carl…ness.
Recently awarded “MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 20/21” for the QLD Prestige awards - Carl Wockner is a straight-up SAVAGE! (the good kind).
Latest single “Fool’s Gold” is a delicate balance of organic-acoustic POP mixed with singer-songwriter lyricism and honesty, which is exactly what you get when you’re first exposed to Carl Wockner, especially in a live setting.
Determined to pave his own path in modern music - Wockner uses multi-instrumentalism and dynamic production to take listeners on a journey through multiple genres and sonic excitement, all while telling a story.
“Recent singles of 2020 END OF ME, PAINT THE AIR, STEREO, CMB have been a collaboration with pop producer Ben Flanders. We added specific ingredients of Pop production with REAL acoustic guitar, hits, taps - vocal trills and voicing. These were all incorporated INTO the beat to give a nice earthy presence, and we even added Kazoo (on Better) just because.. I really feel like we just straight up need more kazoo in our lives!”
Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. The same album has received a 2016 IMA (Independent Music Awards) Finalist nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album. It was following this recent success that Wockner relocated his family to Nashville TN, USA as a strategic move for his evolving career.
Sept 2019, Carl was featured for an entire episode of “Backstage Marquee” a syndicate show aired across the USA featuring original artists set to be ‘the next big thing.’
Sept 2018 Wockner performed LIVE on National USA Television. The show HLN on the CNN Network for the segment “The Weekend Express,” featured Carl’s original songwriting and performance as a showcase taste of Nashville / Music City.
His rare “Live Looping” style solo performance matched only with his signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own. The live shows have been recognized throughout Australia and USA with multiple headliner performances at festivals and touring, and Wockner is now rumoured as one of the busiest musicians in Nashville, TN - aka “Music City.”
Since landing in Nashville, Wockner has released two EP’s including a Christmas release with the favoured “Santa Selfie.” Currently his latest single “Better” is noted as the best studio representation of his signature live performance style.
There’s something about Carl Wockner’s music that simply exudes peace. The peace you feel when you’re humming along to a nostalgic track, or the peace you feel when you just know everything’s going to be ok. However you connect with Carl’s music, you would agree this he is definitely onto something.
Carl’s first EP, the self-produced, recorded, mixed (all in his lounge room) Acoustic…ness, was released in 2011 to an overwhelmingly positive response. Single “Pictures” received airplay on Hot 91 FM and ZINC FM, the latter of whose DJ’s referred to him as “the man with the big hair and Golden Tonsils.” Carl was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2012 and 2013 MusicOZ awards: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, Blues and Roots, and Pop.

    I love that there’s someone finally explaining this in layman’s terms without watering it down to the point of babying, I feel like this answered every question I had about an acoustic overdrive that I’ve had for years and they were all answered in 8 minutes, absolutely amazing! Btw (this has nothing to do with the drive loop) how do you use the vocoder on the VE500 because you’ve gone through your signal chain before and never mentioned the guitar signal going through the VE500, just wondering if it’s split at the tu3 or somewhere else in the signal chain, I’m currently looking into building a very similar (basically identical 🙃) pedalboard myself so just thought I’d ask. Love your stuff, keep it up and I’ll keep listening to fools gold on repeat until it hits a million.

    This is quite possibly the best sounding acoustic overdrive tone I've heard. One question. I don't quite understand why you use a second EQ after the Tumnus. Couldn't you more easily use the treble control in the pedal to eliminate any unwanted high end? Obviously, I'm sure you've thought of this, but im curious as to why you do it this way. Thanks so much

  • @carlwockner

    @carlwockner

    Thanks mate, the problem is when you overdrive you create harmonic overtones. EG even though I cut out all freq above say 6k prior to the sound hitting the tumnus, afterwards there are harmonics and overtones above that freq again, so I hit it a 2nd time to tame those.

    That's a very useful video. Thank you so much for creating it. I'd also love to hear about your signal chain for percussive patches. As in, what effects do you have on when you use your guitar as a kick/snare, etc. Also, how do you go about getting the percussive sounds when your guitar only has a piezo pickup (which of course can be done but it's different than when your pickup system has a mic). Another useful video would be on reverb in the context of looping. I assume you don't use the same reverb settings for all of your patches, as using various reverb settings can help you 'place tracks in the mix' so to speak. Long decays and darker reverbs can push tracks back while short bright verbs can push things in front etc. Lastly, a video about the basic set-up for live looping preset-wise would be lovely. As in, a patch for percussive playing, ambient, rhythm, lead (like in this video) with a signal chain for each.

  • @carlwockner

    @carlwockner

    Hey mate, this will sound strange (given my spaceship at my feet) but I believe simple is best. I have no FX engaged for any percussion, and I have 1 simple reverb that I toggle on or off during my performance / loop building. But mostly it’s off when I build loops so they don’t get washed out. The percussion sounds are a tribute to this brand of guitar. And I avoid mic pickups in guitars since they pick up too much ambient noise when looping and hinder the stage wash of sound. When not looping though, some guitars don’t have a good enough piezo so blending in a mic can sound good. I personally love the sound of this guitar with just the piezo.

    @@carlwockner This is surprising but not disappointing, as I'm also a fan of minimalism in all realms - music creation included. It's reassuring to hear that an experienced artist can achieve stellar results (as evidenced by your music) with this mindset. What about recording/mixing then? Is your approach similarly minimalistic in that regard?

  • @carlwockner

    @carlwockner

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Lynx33PL well thanks mate. Mixing is a whole other thing in the studio but it all stems around a quality gain stage and instrument. With minimal adjustments. You should never be trying to make something sound “good” it should already sound good. When you’re mixing live or in studio the adjustments mostly are removing a problem. Especially in a live setting. Usually only have to do that with 1-2 frequencies based on the room and that’s it!

    next best option would be an AB switch basically creating an FX loop. It's what I'm in the process of putting together right now. Gonna run guitar signal thru everything (vocal fx, wah) up to a clean boost and then into an ABY before en EQ pedal acting as a high and low pass to shape the tone going into the OD pedal.....thinking either a klon clone or Digitech Bad Monkey since it has a cab simulator output that can add some warmth.... and then back out into another ABY (set to Y path) or similar pedal/box to send all guitar signals thru rest of effects (modulation, delay, verb, trem), and into the looper . (really hope this diagram shows correctly using my keyboard) Guitar signal__wah, octave, clean boost___________________verb, delay, _looper \___EQ-OD-EQ?__/ ABY 2nd ABY to rejoin signal path but this one stays on Y

    The helix Minotaur pedal seems to be comparable to the Tumnus pedal. Is there a specific reason to run the external pedal out/in? Is it tonal or personal preference? Could the overdriven be achieved just by placing the Minotaur pedal in the middle of the parametric equalizers. I would imagine the HX Stomp dsp would handle that fine.
