My Abusive Father Locked Me Inside For 30 Years | Minutes With |
Ойын-сауық
In this week's episode of Minutes With, we sat down with Katy Morgan-Davies, born into a London cult. Known as the 'Communist Collective' and led by her father Aravindan Balakrishnan (AB), it operated as a cult of personality. Katy discusses being locked in the house for 30 years, the power dynamics of the group and the abuse she suffered at the hands of cult members.

This is an amazing case for nature vs nurture. Spent nearly 30 years being taught that cruelty is the norm and still had so much kindness in her heart. I wish her nothing but the best in her future what an inspiration 💓

"You can't be free if you're hating other people." Wise words. I wish the best for her. She deserves all that's good in life.
You can still hear the tremor in her voice reliving this CPTSD. What I truly wish for her, if she hasn't already, is to be given THE BEST trauma therapy, psychiatrist and psychologist to helo her bury this horror story. No fee. Private medic. And absent of a waiting time. She deserves this. For the sake of leading a whole life. 💜

You’re so so obviously right it should go without saying… but the NHS waiting lists are huge! I experienced serial sa and physical abuse by dad known to mum and was isolated from school. I had to wait 3.5 years for regular therapy and lost a promised place in a therapeutic community last minute because of funding - on that basis I don’t hold out huge hopes in Katy’s case

It’s the UK, they have the NHS.
I had a chance to interview Katy for my channel and I am glad I contacted her. She is one of the nicest person I have ever met, in addition she is so brilliant.
She’s come SUCH a long way. I’m just so proud of her. I remember hearing her after she was freed (not sure on how soon after) and her language skills were very much affected. She’s composed. Clearly done exception self growth and a lot of work on language and everything else. Just so happy to see this. I really hope she now gets to move on and up and live the life she deserves.
My God, this poor woman. Her capacity for forgiveness and compassion despite being raised around so much hate and violence is so inspiring! I hope wherever she goes in life, she's happy and finally feels the freedom she always deserved.
I wish this woman nothing but the best for the remainder of her life. What monsters they must have been.
Brilliant, resilient, beautiful. The fact that she knew it was all crazy talk even though isolated from the outside world. Wishing her a soft landing, safety, softness and warmth she missed in childhood
coming from such evil parents she as a complete heart of gold this lady i wish her all the happiness in the world i really do
her intrinsic forgiveness shows how kind she is
I remember watching a documentary on television about this cult. She is so extraordinarily soft spoken and also strong considering that she’s here to tell us her story
Word’s can not express how remarkable this woman is. I wish her nothing but love and happiness
Wow! She's amazing! More power to her!
I became familiar with her story through the 2017 BBC documentary ‘Cult Next Door’ an absolutely heartbreaking story. Wishing her all the best.
So sad she had to experience this sick cult, but so glad she knew in her soul things weren't right, that is what saved her. I sincerely hope she gets the support she deserves, no one should ever have to be subjected to a cult. Wishing her healing and love ❤️.
So much respect for this lady, having gone through what she did, she does not hate, does not wish harm on others, I wish her only happiness and contentment for her future
This woman is absolutely amazing - I wish her nothing but positivity and solace 🧡
Many people in the country are nowhere near as articulate & well spoken as Katy who I find truly inspiring. I think she's very beautiful also, I hope you realise that Katy, not just on the inside but the outside too 💕 Thank you for telling your story which I'm sure will help many others
What an intelligent and brave woman - to experience years of abuse & emotional manipulation and come out the other side is a victory. Wish her all the best X
what a sweet angel. sending her so, so much love and strength, i hope she continues to heal from the pain and rawness of experiencing the world anew after decades imprisoned… seems impossible to grasp to me, but i am in awe of her goodness, it is so clear and seeps through her every word
Katy is so well spoken & intelligent. It is really impressive, especially hearing about the life she was forced to live. I can't imagine her recieving that great of an education while being in the cult. I'm absolutely impressed & so glad she was able to get out. She seems like such an amazing person!
What a beautiful soul surviving all the evil she endured Wishing you all the best ❤
I saw the documentary about her case years ago and often think of her. I hope she is doing well, she deserves the best.
It is just unbelievable , when you have care free , happy childhood . Lots of little friends and cousins , parents doting over us . Then you hear this horrors 😥😢 And I wonder how much more nasty happenings are around as at this very moment .
I can understand how she believed it, she was born into it and grew up in it... but I just can't comprehend the adults who joined. I'm glad she got out ❤
Wow, I've seen other videos about this cult but I haven't heard her story. She's AMAZING and I'm so proud of her and how well she is doing. She knew her household was wrong and she knew what was right. I can't imagine her childhood cracking down around her and reviling a better world and one that she missed out on in the beginning. She deserves so much more love and kindness.
I'm pretty speechless at the hell this poor woman went through. You are so brave to even recount the things you went through, let alone go through it all. I honestly hope that you have the most comfortable, relaxed life from here on and you are treated with the kindness we all deserve.
What an incredible woman with an incredible amount of strength. I wish her all of the happiness in the world for the rest of her long life
She spoke in such a graceful and elegant way, it’s amazing
Absolutely crazy to think things like this exist in the UK. A fantastic Lady, I wish her all the happiness in the World, She certainly deserves it. Shame it was recorded in a tent on a roundabout.

Very brave. At least she had a team of two, herself and somebody else to reason out the dilemma being wrong to be living that way and for the need of freedom.
I have seen a documentary about this cult beforewith an interview with both her and aisha. It was a very good documentary and one where she was a bit younger I am guessing. It is amazing the see she made so much progress!
Wow! This was great to see an update, she's so much more confident! Well done Katy
What a beautiful soul, she’s learned skills and gifts she shouldn’t have had to learn but they will equip her so she can live a safe and happy life she so well deserves more than anything ❤️ you’ll shine bright brave strong beautiful soul ❤️
What an amazingly badass person, that kindness is just inspiring.
It makes me sad that it took such a long time for somebody outside to care or notice things weren't right... When her mother committed suicide, none of the police checked her welfare. Child protective services never investigated. They didn't seem to question anything about who she was, where her records were, why she wasn't in school or her living circumstances. And when she escaped as an adult they treated her as a runaway teenager and completely dismissed her and didn't investigate anything. They questioned her with her abusers in the room, which shouldn't happen in any domestic violence situation because the victim can easily be scared and coerced by their abuser into not speaking. Which is what happened to her. They didn't seem to even get in a social worker or anything to delve into the situation and didn't connect her to any services to help. I mean, it should've been clear from talking to her that she was trapped in a cult. Instead they sent her back. It's terrible.

Thank you Katy for sharing your story. You are an amazing person! I’m so impressed with you!!!
I see so much of myself in Katy. I hope she gets to have all the joy in her life that she didn't get before. The body does keep the score (-Bessel van der Kolk) and it's terrible how you keep feeling the injustice in your body long after gaining freedom and safety, but with her resilience and mindset, I'm hopeful for her that she can forgive her body, too, and enjoy every moment despite it. ❤
Katie is a remarkable woman and explains everything so well. Thank you Katie.
To go through all that she went through and still be so kind and caring shows just how wonderful of a woman she is. You are strong!! You are beautiful, and you have such a wonderful heart. May god bless you and watch over you. I sure hope you have since found the happiness and love that you so deserve.
Phenomenal.......she's is just phenomenal!!! @LADbible I hope you have her on again! I'm sure there is a lot more to tell....She covered soo much. What a lovely person.
Such a strong woman, it's amazing she shut out the brainwashing and didn't turn into one of those monsters. May she have a blessed life now, she deserves it but it still won't make up for all those lost years 😢
Wow! What an incredible woman! I’m in awe of your bravery! I hope you get the love snd support you need.
What an unbelievably strong, compassionate, wonderful woman!
You can see she is such a kind soul, it's very painful that this was a part of her life. I hope she & the others went on to live better lives. It feels to me like the man had some sort of mental health - I wonder if that was looked into.

What unfathomable things happen to people ! Katy has such warmth & kindness instead of bitterness & hate.
Thank you for videos. My intentions are to learn all I can about this kind of activity to see how it goes unnoticed by so many.

So often we hear about people that suffer and don't have the courage to escape. Congratulations Katy you are a courageous and beautiful person, Godspeed.

Such a beautiful, thoughtful lady. Stunning. I wish her every love going forwards 💙🙏
She is so lovely and gentle - I hope she is happy and well
Incredible and intelligent lady I hope the very best for her ❤
This brought me to tears and not just because of the terrible things that had been done to her but because she was able to remain good and decent and her heart remained pure in spite of it all. Someone else said in the comments above this is a perfect case and argument against the whole nature versus nurture. This baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult was physically, emotionally and psychologically abused and yet through it all she never gave in to the dark side. She is the light. I wish I could meet her I have such pure love and respect for someone who has been through so much. I wish I could know how she is doing now … if she is coping and handling life… does she have friends a husband or family now ..? I pray she is doing well. God bless her always.
God Bless you sister.
What a sweet woman she is. She understands forgiveness as Jesus taught. Bless you, my sister. I hope all you're disabilities and apprehensions are healed, in the name of Jesus.
The love of control can lead people to do really vile things. I wish all the captives the best.
i'm so happy to see Katy doing well, there's an interview with her for a news programme some where and watching that and learning about what she's been through broke my heart. Lots of love to her and all the other survivors
If I hadn't known her story and just saw her mannerism I would say this woman was raised right. It is incredible how kind and loving she is, even to the people who hurt her so much. A 1 in a billion type of person!
WOW you are so powerful and got out of it! You must be so strong! I wish you only the best in all the world!!!
Kudos to this woman. Because I probably wouldn’t be even speaking straight in her case let alone outside and enjoying life.
What a beautiful lady, inside and out. Bless her.
Beautiful soul.
I can't believe it is her, a while ago I read about her story about her cult. It's amazing to hear from her perspective
She's a fricken saint. She has remarkable empathy for someone who grew up in those conditions.

Proud of you, love you, and wish you nothing but the best❤️❤️❤️
I'm always horrified by how cruel people can be to each other..... Don't understand.....
My mom tried to do this to me. She didn’t “allow” me to work or have friends or date. I finally got away from her when I was 23. But I struggled for a while longer until I met my husband. She was so pissed when I got married.

@@the_local_bigamist It is actually very common in Asia where parents are like this. I am not being a dick. I hate this type of parenting too. In Western countries you don't see that type of parenting very often, this person probably compared how her friends' parents treat their kids differently than hers. I am not siding with her mom or her, I've seen parents where they lose their children because their kids do not understand the sacrifices and type of love that the parents are providing. They do not understand the intentions their parents have to be the best parents they can be. It is quite saddening for both sides. Sounds to me like her mom just needed to learn how to let go of her baby, but again I don't know what other problems she had with her mom, so I can't say much. It is a very sad situation to be in for both sides.

Brutal story and self portrait inflicted upon this beautiful young woman, which was never her fault in the first place ! Really I think her parents should be put in jail and her grandparents, the same and her brother right there with him. They are sick people and we need to stay away from those kind of people and be kept away from their violence and mental instability..
