@Jannes Ebeling Just like how we have physical features, music preferences that helps us relax and etc; our brain works a little bit different from others so that the concept of a study method may help everyone, a bit of tweaking and finding the method that works best for you is still the most effective ultimate study method that you should follow.

As a pre med student who uses most of their time studying I just recently figured out that I am not studying effectively and with my MCAT right around the corner it’s terrifying to risk changing my study habits because I’ve been getting great results however after hearing thoughts on not writing notes and how it’s been working well for you I’m going to give these tips a try

  • @xevve5959

i suggest not to try new things as you have your exams in the corner because trying new things if your exams are close will cause inconsistency in your normal way of studying , which as you said gets you good marks as well ( this was suggested by kharma himself btw ) so try sticking with your normal note taking or try if you want to just a suggestion . good luck

I am in my first year psychology and did the same in the first semester, endless note taking, which I realised after the exams, had been pointless. I now focus on relisening lectures, reading lecture notes and looking at past exam papers.

  • @InversePacman

I'm a 3rd year psych student who struggles with ADHD, so reviewing lectures is a daunting task in itself, however I have noticed that when profs provide a single past paper I understand what I should be studying more clearly and can relate it to the lectures. Problem for me is, none of my profs provide past papers anymore and I cannot seem to find any that are geared toward psychology, have you managed to find any resources which provide just that? Thanks!

@@InversePacman Hey! I've not been through the UK or US university systems so not sure if this will be relevant or not (I am a psychology student though). When I didn't have access to past papers I would make my own. I'd go through the lectures and think about what the most important things to know seemed to be, then write questions covering those topics and also write out an ideal answer based on the lecture information. Then after a week or two I'd try to answer the questions from memory and compare my answers to the 'ideal answers' I'd written from my notes. If you have friends in the class it can be great if everybody writes their own questions and shares them because then you can see what other people think are the most important points and good answers to these. The first time you do this you could even make a time to talk with the lecturer or tutor to see if you are on the right track in terms of identifying the main things they are looking for.

Wow. This "not taking notes" thing is so relatable. I recently switched to not taking notes too when I realised the ultimate fellow that assists us in the examination hall is our Brain. All information needs to be stored there, whether through writing notes or directly from text books. So yea it is a waste of time sometimes and can give you a false sense of accomplishment Thankyou Nasir for these amazing and lesser known tips 🙏

I feel like many are stuck in writing and typing notes and that so much emphasis is on this technique to learn for exams that we forget to study how to study and what works best for ourselves! Good luck to everyone in finding what works best for them! ;)

Thought I’d do the same a little study group of mine teach the others out weakest areas e.g. I would teach an area of linguistics that I’m not confident with so the person in the group who is confident can tell me if I’ve fully understood it. We also teach each other what we’re really good at so the others can learn from us. It works really well and you learn a lot of extra skills too. To teach is to learn.

Well I did most of it wrong and exactly how you said and am going to have an exam in two days. Watched this video because I felt like I haven't studied at all and just feel bad mentally. What hurts most is that active learning and spaced repetition are methods that my sister uses all the time. I knew it is better, but I was just stuck on this idea that I need a summary of everything and can only look at the questions / old or example exams if I went "through everything". It's so passive and time consuming but it's easier. Thank you for your advice. It was important to me to "officially" be called out doing these mistakes / inefficient methods.

I totally agree with the use of past papers being really helpful, but unfortunately in my country where I study medicine there is no such thing. There's no place where the past questions are stored. Of course we try and ask students that have already finished the year about their exams, but professors know that and deliberately try to come up with some crazy questions every year so that we don't "just learn past questions and pass the exam". It leads to the questions being more and more specific and out of context, so its really hard to prepare for it. It feels like the significance of students knowing the most important part of material is gone and now they just try to make us fail. From what I gathered from your videos studying in UK feels more balanced and focused on practical knowledge instead of memorising every little detail that probably wont be useful when we finally get to practice medicine in hospitals.

I only study 2-4 hours a day but I meditate, exercise, eating a healthy diet, I use my bike to spend time with nature and sleep 6-8 hours a day. I still can retain informations using output method and practice testing.
