How to Study Only 2 Hours a Day yet STILL Ace your Exams

We all know that spending more time doesn't necessarily mean better results. I learned that working for 2 hours a day at an intensity of 10 is better than working 10 hours a day at an intensity of 2. In this video, I'm going to share all the strategies that I learned throughout high school, college, and medical school that boosted the value of my study time, giving me more freedom to enjoy other things I love.

I have been using Remnote for almost two months. In the beginning yes it was all free, but now it has started demanding subscription for things like image occlusion, which as you know is vital to studying anatomy. Is this a foreshadowing of what is to come? Will more and more features be unavailable for free? I made it my default studying up but now I am worried that I will eventually lose data. Should we stick to (free) anki???

You have motivation... but to not study, or do a task at hand, but you do not have motivation to study, etc. Try changing gears, and turn your motivation over to studying. To be honest I thought the same and what I believe is the solution to this is to set the bar lower. Realisticly speaking having a B or C is good too, but if you only want A's this pressure is gonna take you down in the form of procastination. Because what happens if you study hard and don't ace? It's gonna hurt your ego and you don't want that. At least this is the case for me and now I need to work from the bottom all the way up till I'm satisfied with enough B's on my exams.

I never understood how people could spend like 12hrs studying on the weekend, even when finals came around I didn't study that much. (I just graduated from high school so this was my experience in senior year)I usually gave myself one hour per day at home to finish everything and 2hrs max per day on weekends because I found that having slept well and a clear head allowed me to study more efficiently. And it also helped not to procrastinate when you know you won't be there sitting for hours and not being able to finish your work, it's way easier to get one hour down and put stuff away.

University is a lot different! I was that kid in high school who just paid attention in class and could count on one hand how often I studied throughout the year. In college, you gotta study. Professors often won’t teach you everything in class (not enough time). Not trying to scare you though! It all depends on your college, your major, how well you retain information, etc. I found I had MORE free time my freshman year than I did in high school (because they keep you in class 8 hours a day, in college you control your own pace *also didn’t have any sport responsibilities*). In the end, PLEASE don’t fall into the trap of studying too much. Use your time well, pay attention in class, and study what you feel rough on. As an engineering student, wayyyyy too many of my peers focus too much on school and are missing out on a lovey social life. Each person has a different reason for studying too much, but they’re almost always bad ones. Going into my Junior year now and I almost always leave Fridays and Saturdays for just having fun and goofing off. Gotta have some time for yourself on the other days too though!

I have been in a lot of tight situations for exams. What has helped me the most is making a simple list (per chapter) of just the concepts/terms that I need to know. I only write the names (no definitions), and I then realign them from the most important to the least important. I then type out (in my own words) the definitions of the terms without looking at notes. I double-check and repeat. This system has helped me a lot in exams.

However, with the quantity we need to learn in medicine, my previous methods were simply ineffective. I was forced to study the testable materials and let go of my principles.

My own way worked so I should stick to them, I don't have to compare myself with these people. They are just here to guide us :)

I really found comfort in both of your comments, so thank you so much for mentioning your own experience too. I relate so much to this and I might not have even realized the reason why I am feeling so burntout might be that I am trying to be someone I am not, everyone studies different and that's totally fine! Let's all together try to do what makes us feel best and more productive than what appears to be good on the surface but would not work for us. Best of luck!

From what I’ve heard from Elite students, in advanced classes 4-7 hours a day should be enough. If you need more you are being inefficient. You do need some quantity but it has to be a quantity of quality hours. 2 hours a day can work of course if you mass it over time. 2 hours each day is better than 6 hours the night before an exam

Interesting how different my experience was. I was a high performing student who barely studied all through tertiary education, and I did almost nothing except learn in class. Usually taking notes at the rate at which I was understanding the lecture, letting myself fall behind to think if I needed to. In some harder courses I had to study a bit for the exam in order to learn the things that you only learn by applying your knowledge, but in most courses, it was only a matter of confirming my understanding. I found a focus on understanding rather than optimizing for the exam gave me a bit of an advantage in classes whose professors liked to throw in never-before-seen trick questions on their finals.

If you're in high school, it's simply not worth it to spend that many hours a day for school. Whether it's just as a personal challenge or if you want to be able to go to top, top schools. These top colleges look at the student overall. Their school spirit, their involvement in their own high school, and extracurricular activities. Another thing that is heavily looked at is SAT and ACT scores. I don't remember off the top of my head but many top schools require a score of something around 1300 and 25 respectively (it's different for every school). If this is for college, however, it's still not worth it, no matter the major, to go for high honors. Just aim for 3.2 or higher. Unless you have a scholarship that requires a minimum GPA or if you're in a program like nursing where you need a higher minimum GPA. Schools/employers don't just look at GPA or scores. They look beyond that. They look at how motivated you are for your school and for your future. Any clubs that you join or any orchestra/band or any competing that you do for your school they'll look at all of that. You can even pick up competing in math or reading or anything of the such. Anyway, I wish I could help you a lot more but I really can't since I don't know your situation that well, I would love to know more about it so that I can assist you more. Feel free to DM if you'd like.

I study like 2 hours a month lmao. I rarely ever take notes and I definitely wouldn't ever review them. The way I retain information is by asking questions in class constantly. A solid 10-20 questions per class per day and I no joke have not gotten anything under an A for any exam or final grade. Studying works for some people but not everyone learns things the same way. For some people, studying might even make you do worse because reviewing notes on a topic that you don't really understand isn't going to change anything. You didn't understand when you wrote them down, you won't understand when you review them. For these people, I recommend instead asking questions about things you don't know. Don't be afraid to ask questions you assume everyone else already knows because if you don't know, most likely others don't know either and you'll be doing them a favor by asking. Look up external reviews and explanations. Sometimes I'll reference video essays on the topics that I'm trying to write about and form my ideas based off of that. Maybe even try to explain/teach the concept to someone else. Often times you'll find that you understand it a lot more than you thought you did because in trying to find a way to explain it in simple terms that others will understand, you'll find yourself understanding it even more. If studying doesn't work for you, then don't beat yourself up over it. If you're spending 10 hours a week studying or 10 hours a day studying and it's doing nothing, then you're wasting all that time when you could be trying different methods. This idea that you NEED to study to be successful in school is silly. When I first started working on cars, I could've read the service manuals a hundred times over but it never would've worked as well as actually doing hands on work. When I was learning physics, I could memorize all the concepts and formulas sure, but none of it stuck as much as me connecting the concepts to my real world experiences. But of course, like I said, everyone learns differently. If studying works for you, then more power to you. It's never worked for me and I'm okay with that. As long as you find something that works, that's what matters most. When my students tell me that they just don't understand the material, I ask them to explain what they do know to the best of their ability and I'll fill in the gaps, but for the most part they actually do understand the material and just let that uncertainty be the reason why they got answers wrong. They doubted their answers so they changed them to what they thought was right, only to be wrong. That's the way the cookie crumbles I guess

my advice for you is to not get so hung up on the details. What matters is that you become a civil engineer, it doesn't matter if you do it in 5 years, 10 years, or 30 years. All that matters is that you end up accomplishing your goal. To that end, I will say this, make sure that every A and B is a moment to be proud of yourself, and everything lower is a learning experience, not a punishment. Grades are meant to tell you where you're at, not a punishment and certainly not for your parents or anyone else to look down on you for. Far too many students were raised in a way where they do everything for everyone but themselves. They get good grades and the first thing they do is show their parents because they want to make them proud. That's fine, but they should really be proud of themselves first and foremost. Never set goals for others, it's your life. Lastly, you might experience "senioritis" your senior year, but I'm here to tell you that there's no such thing. It's not you being lazy and just wanting to graduate, it's the fact that your whole life you were told that graduating high school was a huge thing and that it's a massive goal. It's been your whole life and you don't know anything else. What's really going on is that you just achieved a big goal for the first time and you just don't know how to handle it, so you ultimately feel underwhelmed, and now that you finished this goal, you no longer have any drive to "reach the end" AKA "your goal" so you really need to make sure to have lots of goals ready. Keep your eye on being a civil engineer and stay motivated. It's your life and you're the one who decides how far you make it, so make the most of it and above all else, enjoy the journey. You'll only ever get to enjoy youth for so long and you'll never get to redo this, so seriously, take it slow and breathe a little. Enjoy what you have and minimize your regrets. Participate in school events, go to games, go to the dances, join clubs, and just enjoy being young with minimal responsibilities. Worry about being a "grown-up" once your bones start hurting lol.

I am still getting good grades. I feel smarter now because I'm having to do it in a short time. The constraint of time has trained my brain to process information faster. When you have to work a real job - this skill comes handy.

Such a valuable skill, as long as we are willing to invest the effort up front

I used to cram back then cause I'm confident I'll just be able to easily remember all of the lectures but when I got into senior high I just end up falling behind and failing. So I dived into this learning how to learn whole to fix this...Now I'm currently testing my learning approach plans. A great advice: Focus on the learnings not the (grades, competition).

I need less time studying! I am on call 24/7 in a small practice and I have children. Not every student has over 2 hrs a day to dedicate to studying. So I really appreciate this video!

my biggest issue in UG was turning my highlights into flashcards, and turning labeled diagrams into unlabeled diagrams. a program that can do that would be god-tier, as my PDF textbooks would be my primary learning sources alongside oneNote from class lectures.

I’m one of those guys who studies less and does ok by studying smart. Though it is full focus in lessons and lectures trying to get the concepts and in my free time only work on my weaknesses.
