My 1st composition doll restoration

Ойын-сауық

Please note: I do not recommend putting your composition dolls in the oven even at extremely low heat. Please watch videos all the way through, as my process for recording is sharing everything I did in the process that worked, and what did not. My videos are both HOW TO and HOW TO NOT, LOL! I share my mistakes so you won't make them yourself. Thanks for watching and for comments! I appreciate them all very much!

Very nice Liz! The thing about moisture in the composition is that it keeps it from crumbling. It's a wood thing and I wouldn't expect you to know that. For a first time, it's a lovely work. I'm impressed.

Dodi's Dolls thank you for your kind words, coming from you that means a lot! I am thankful that my dad was a carpenter and cabinet maker, he showed me how to do wood projects and started me on my dollhouse building when I was 13! I know about wood, even how to whittle wooden dolls, but not so much about composition dolls! I’ll get there though, it always good to learn new things and keep a humble heart of a beginner. That’s how we learn the most! Thanks for always commenting and sharing your knowledge!

Thank you, Tammy!!! I used acrylic paints and then an acrylic matte spray sealer, to give that shine back. The matte still has a shine, as you can see. I will make a video on these eyes, it’s easy when you break it down into steps. I wish I had made her eyes a bit bigger. But she’s is my first compo restoration, you have to start somewhere! Thank for all your kind words and info on your videos, you inspired me to try!!!!

You did an awesome job for your first try Liz, she turned out so sweet! ..But, HOLY MOLY! .. Let me pick my wig back up off the floor..LOL. 'you know you can put composition dolls into ovens to cure because you've put paper in an oven' From where do you find that information? Lucky it didn't crack far more! PLEASE do not expose antique/vintage composition dolls, or any doll that might fall apart with age, to extreme temperatures of any kind! Even sudden changes in climate during shipping can ruin a doll for good! Ruby Lane has a vid on Wax dolls and this happened to a guest speaker( who should have known better TBH) who should have let the doll 'warm up' to the climate BEFORE unpacking her for display. The ONLY exclusion will be the china bisque or the pot dolls. (but not their cloth/leather/composition bodies.. If it aint china, or clay, don't cook it! You CAN use a hairdryer to speed up the curing process of Milliput though, but again, be vewy vewy carefie of the heat! Never expose them to water, so do not bath them, or clean with a lot of water. Do not store dolls in garages/lofts, or any outside storage that will experience damp and extreme temperatures. Keep them away from AC vents too! I don't have a vid channel on youtube yet as I don't really have the time to fit vids into my busy life just yet, but add me on Facebook and ask anything you are not sure of, or want to know how. Sealie Clem. Come over see my restorations, and revamps, too! Anyone interested in doll repair/restoration are also welcome to hook up on FB with me too!

LOL! Hope you picked your wig bag up! I did clarify, it did make more cracks, so lesson learned, don't use polymer clay! I also didn't recommend anyone else doing it, as I stated, it's a How-To and a How-To-NOT. LOL! Thanks for your kind words and taking time to comment! Bright Fairy Blessings!

Hi Liz, nice work! May I ask you - what do you use as a fixative after you've painted a composition doll? May I use a matte spray fixative from the craft store? Thank you! I need some guidance as this is my first compo doll project.

I use a matte spray as well! You’ll notice that it still has a sheen to it, even if it does say “matte” on the label. But I think it’s the perfect level of sheen between a matte and a gloss, because that’s what the composition dolls looked liked brand new. It works for oils and acrylics, and it dries fast, so it’s easy to spray on in thin mists, in several coats (as many as you’d like) without running! Another alternative is a matte brush on varnish, if you can’t be around fumes. But you have to have a good brush, plenty of lighting and a steady hand to get the coat even, but I’ve used it as well, with pretty nice results! It’s good for smaller doll projects, whereas the spray is more ideal for larger dolls, as it covers more surface more evenly. Make sure hat you’ve let any paint work on your doll dry for a day or two before putting on the fixative, I made a mistake once and it made my paint bleed and I had to start over! Thank you for watching and commenting! Hope this helps! 💕🧚‍♀️💕

What type of paint did you use? Did you use plasters for the blushing? Did you spray a matte fixative over all your work? I have Horsman Buttercup that I want to try to restore!
