For those who don’t understand the M&M bit, Van Halen were known for having the venues they were playing at have a bowl of M&Ms with no brown ones to make sure that they actually cared about the band
@devinsinderwitcz9134
Жыл бұрын
It was actually a clause in the contract to make sure the promoters read it. Bands will tell you how bad electric can be at some venues along with crappy stages, dressing rooms, etc. The clause ensures if the promoter doesn't meet the contract demands the band doesn't get sued nor are they forced to play the venue.

@@cliffords2315 I had heard from a friend that EVH told Steve Lynch to not do any tapping while on the tour. Did you ever hear about that?
I just found out the craziest thing about this pedal. I had it in my room which I don’t usually do and I was just about to sleep and had the lights off and realized that the knobs on the pedal have glow in the dark paint on them. I guess so you can see the knobs on a dark stage

The sound it made actually really actually blew my mind I think I'll buy one
Haha, quick cool story about the BROWN M&M LEGEND: Lee Roth recently put out a video explaining that the reason they added that clause in the rider was because their show was so extravagantly involved that they needed every concert venue to be very careful and precise in their industrial setup of the arena/stadium or else serious injury might occur to all kinds of people from electrical to structural failure. A lot of venue teams weren't following every detail, so they included the tiny "brown m&m" clause as a reveal so they would know immediately whether or not the crews had read the entire thing. They let the legend live on with them as prima donnas for a laugh and more publicity. I thought that was pretty badass.
@devinsinderwitcz9134

Actually not prima donnas. A lot of roadies have been seriously hurt or worse at venues because of crappy stage setups, electrical issues, etc.

@@TomFaron he is actually quite a good player (the guy in the video). He was playing some van halen tunes but you have to realize eddie used a lot of other effects stacked on top of the amp itself. The only problem with the setup that is missing is the eq. It sounds way too saturated but maybe thats due to the gate. I have a 6505 and these amps and or pedals sound much better with an eq. Without it can make a good guitarist sound not quite as good because of the muddiness... Just my humble opinion sir.

Hey, could you do another distortion pedal shootout? Your last one was in 2012, so obviously many more have come onto the market since then. Thanks for all the videos and keep them coming.
it's eddie van halens original paint job with a mixture of ductape and paint, you can see from their earlier material that it was originally white and that the red was added later as far as i'm aware being a massive EVH fan. pedal looks awesome btw

Very cool
EVH painted the original Frankenstrat black, then added a few strips of masking tape and painted it white. After switching to the bumble bee for the second album and not being happy with it he went back to the Frankenstrat but first added a red paint layer.
@catdumpling
8 жыл бұрын
+Severinate Dammit, beat me to it ;) . Just to add, Ed never had a "reason" for adding the stripes, aside from the fact that he thought plain black was boring. He just grabbed some masking tape that he had laying around, taped it up, and sprayed the white. After the "Bumblebee" one didn't turn out very good (playability-wise), he decided to "spruce up" the black and white one with red paint. Kramer "copied" his black/white/red scheme, but the stripe pattern was very different. In fact, Ed didn't like how new his Kramers looked when he went to the factory to pick them up, so he asked Paul Unkert if he could "beat 'em up and make 'em look old". It turns out we may have Eddie to thank (or blame, depending on your personal views on the matter) for the whole "relicing" thing.

+catdumpling I read a long time ago where Eddie said after their first album, some guitar companies started selling copies of his black and white, so he added red to make it difficult to copy. He didn't want people to think he was endorsing those copies.
@catdumpling
8 жыл бұрын
Ednerd Could be. The fact is, Ed has changed his mind (or at least the story) over the years. When he did the interview several years back (right after the uber-expensive Franky repros came out), he said he just got tired of fighting with the black and yellow guitar, so he went back to the black and white one. He said he didn't really want to go back to just black and white colors, so he sprayed the red over it. FWIW, he said he never could get the black and yellow one to work the way he wanted to, which is why he didn't really play it much (it was probably used more for photos than actual stage/studio use!) As great of a guitar player as Ed is, he's...kind of full of himself, and always has been. I think the praise got to him early on and his ego's been a little over-inflated ever since. That's not to take anything away from his playing or the great songs he's written, I just think people shouldn't necessarily take everything he says about his equipment as 100% truth.
I'm looking for a overdrive pedal that lets me control the overdrive using just the volume knob on my guitar. When turned down to 3-4 and it sounds clean with a little dirt and as I turn up the volume I'd like a proportional overdriven sound without a huge boost in volume or change of tone , this is what made the classic Vox, Fender & Marshall all tube amps so great. I would also like to retain the picked or plucked percussive dynamics come through even when the overdrive is cranked.
@grindstone25

Tbh you may need a compressor, get whatever overdrive suites you just make sure the compressor comes after the overdrive comes before the compressor in your signal chain and you should be all good.

The MXR 5150 overdrive is the same price as the Wampler Pinnacle overdrive. Here in the U.S. Both of them are made to give you the brown sound. Both cost 199 USD. I'd love to see you do a comparison video of the two to see who gets the closest to the brown sound.

Wampler is great but I’d just get the MXR; the man himself worked on it and that smart gate is nice!
Great video. They really should've brought in the EVH phase and flange though. Used the phase for lead parts, the flange for copping that Unchained tone, and really put that 5150 overdrive through it's paces. Still good otherwise though.
Pete you seem petty cool love to meet ya come too amerika!
: / Hey, that bit with the M&Ms was funny! I wanted to shed some light on the history of Eddies personal stripe design. ( From the mouth of Eddie himself! ) HE said that he first got the stripe idea by accident. One day he had his ALL WHITE strat body and wanted to give it a more exciting look, something that made it HIS OWN, ( just like his playing ) I added that by the way, he did say that last part about just like his playing.. But he did say he wanted to create something that was his and made the guitar stand out. All he had to work with at the time, was canned bicycle paint ( a can of red, and a can of black ) So he put masking tape ( not duct tape ) all around the guitar, and then sprayed it black! He said he took the tape off and it looked good, ( it was now black with white stripes! ) Then he re taped the guitar and painted it white again! ( this was his very first striped guitar, the white and black one ) Then later, he taped it up again, and painted the guitar red! And that was the main guitar he kept and used. It was red with black and white stripes! ( Im sure most people who know about Eddie, also know he did the same thing with another strat body, using black with yellow stripes ( i personally dont like that one ) My favorite is the white with black stripes look. ( but i also really like the blue and black stripe colors on Wolfie's bass guitar! if you havent seen that one? check it out. Its really nice, and its like Wolfie's "own" version of the "Van halen stripe design" ...... So yeahh, that is the story of How the van halen stripe design came about.. Just like all the other inventions and modifications Eddie came up with! HE JUST WENT FOR IT! : ) I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU EDDIE! I LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU SOMEDAY IN HEAVEN! ( and ofcourse jamming with you too! ) OH AND PS! I ALSO WANT TO SAY TO THE CAPTAIN... WHY DONT YOU EVER PLAY GUITAR ON YOUR DEMO VIDEOS????? I HAVE HEARD YOU PLAY AND YOU CAN PLAY! YOU PLAY VERY WELL! YOU JUST HAVE TO STOP THINKING ABOUT IT, AND JUST FEEL IT AND LET OUT WHAT YOU ARE FEELING! THAT IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT! INDIVIDUAL SELF EXPRESSION! THIS IS WHAT EDDIE WAS ALL ABOUT! HE JUST PLAYED THE WAY HE FELT, AND TRIED TO GET THE SOUNDS HE HEARD IN HIS HEAD AND WANTED TO HEAR FROM HIS GUITAR! HE WAS JUST BEING HIMSELF!!!!! WE ALL NEED TO DO THE SAME WITH WHATEVER INSTRUMENT WE PLAY! AND YOU CAN TOO CAPTAIN!
maybe that pedal would sound better through a different amp. that victory amp does not sound good at all.
seems like it would be cool for versatility if you tracked say dirty tracks with a 5150 and clean with a fender in the studio like a LOT of people do. But it's not really as ballsy as a 5150. Probably a decent compromise for live use though is you want to bring a fender tube combo and use this for you high gain tone.
I bet right when Lee gave his salute he wanted to say "GREEEEEEEETINGS"
3:35 for discussion about the setup, 4:24 for start of actual demo
It sounds MUCH better without the carbon copy added. Imagine the guitar part in a mix as opposed to solo and you can see how much that added brightness could really get in the way.

First note that resembles a demo at 3:29 for those wanting to see how the pedal works. Spoiler alert: 3:29 is just the sound of the amp without any pedals. And to be fair, 4:28 (out of a 9 minute video) is where you get to hear the absolute FIRST sound of this pedal.
i love the brown m&m joke. 😆
The EVH striped guitar is decorated as such because that confusing pattern is much the way Eddie's mind works.
Nice
Love the Van Halen banter!
Video and audio quality on this one is just so incomparably superior to the videos with Chapman that the latter is starting to look like a parody. Whatever you're doing or changing, keep at it.

Reminds me of a modded mxr M-142 Distortion II
Hell yea
still nothing better than a good tube amp and good cab for overdrive. I don't think it sounds like vintage EVH. if you listen to the isolated guitar tracks from VH1, Eddies sound is not that distorted. He loved a lot of overdrive and volume, but liked to keep the tone fairly clean. Not to mention a lot of his tone comes from his fingers and technique. Most overdrive pedals sound like thrash metal distortion and that just isn't the brown sound. Not a bad pedal, but the best VH sound I ever got was from a Peavey 5150 block amp paired with the Marshall 1960 Cab with the 25 watt greenbacks.
great
My question is does the noise gate works when connected to other pedals? Or do i need to buy a separate NG MXR pedal?
RiP Eddie
How about a blindfold test MXR 5150 Pedal vs. EVH 5150III 50 watt vs. EVH LBX 15 wat lunch box??? In other words if I only have $200 can I get away with the pedal to get the Edward approved tone, or do I really need to save up for one of the amps?
Sounds like a box of rocks with that amp
It sounds awesome with the bright carbon copy, but by itself it's way too dark. This might be the amp though, it sounds like the high end is breaking up on clean. Might sound difference through a Deluxe or SL, something where the bass breaks up before the treble?
Wow peter has a sense of humour, cool!
That OD button is vestigial. And with no light to tell if it's on or not you can't even trick your brain into thinking it's doing something. But this pedal has a very generous amount of distortion.
