MXR® Dookie Drive™ Pedal (Pt. 1)

Billie Joe Armstrong’s guitar tone on Green Day’s groundbreaking album Dookie sounded dirty and punchy with the perfect amount of articulation to express the musicality of his fast, melodic riffs. He got that sound by running his signal through two heavily modified amplifiers-one scooped with a ton of gain and the other with a well-defined midrange. When it came time to mix the record, the band blended the two signals together in different ratios to match the vibe of each track.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Dookie, we’re releasing the MXR Dookie Drive. It captures the sound of both of Billie Joe’s amps in a single pedal so that you can dial in your own variations of that famous Dookie sound. We borrowed the amps themselves so that the MXR team could carefully analyze all the sonic qualities that make them sound so darn good. After much analysis and A/B testing, our engineers rebuilt the amps from scratch in pedal circuit form and fit them into a single housing. The High Gain and Clean Gain sections each have their own controls, while the Blend control allows you to mix them together just like Green Day did in the studio. If you want some extra scoop in the midrange of the overall output signal, just hit the Scoop switch.
The Dookie Drive isn’t just for Green Day fans-this totally unique pedal provides a full harmonic range of overdriven tones for a playing experience that is full of depth and dimension.

@@thadenmartin4713 everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I don't think you can dispute that Billie Joe grew immensely as a songwriter from that first record. There are some really goofy lyric and melody choices on 39/Smooth. Go back and listen to "I Was There" and tell me that's on par with anything on Dookie or Insomniac. There are some great songs on that first record, but calling it Billie Joe's best writing is wild.

Funny thing is, if you look at old interviews even Billie says he doesn't know how they got the Dookie tone on the album. He was basically using a 1959SLP Marshall Head modded with an extra gain stage and master volume. In the studio it sounded totally different than on the album. I'm sure the MXR pedal gives you a pretty good approximation, but if you want the true Dookie tone you're going to want an old Marshall plexi, or at least something like a JCM800 with a Vintage 30 loaded cabinet.

I love how you're actually using an early 80's Fernandes Revival strat with the late 70's Bill Lawrence in the bridge instead of a daphne blue squier with a cheap humbucker lol. I noticed that the gain knob doesn't seem to do anything when the blend knob is turned all the way to the "Pete" position, but it has a huge effect when I'm favoring the "Meat" side. I really liked the tones I was getting with the blend knob at about 11:00 and the gain around 1:00-2:00.

I bought one recently and put it this way...this is the best pedal I’ve ever used! And I don’t typically gravitate towards pedals but I’m a massive Green Day fan like this thing even through a Marshall dsl20cr is MASSIVE it gives me that sound of theirs that I’ve been striving to recreate for the better part of 7 years 🤟
