MXQ Pro 4K Upgrade Secrets

Welcome back to MBOX Frustrated User Guide. Have a old MXQ Pro 4K MBOX running
Android 6 or greater? In this episode (published 4/30/19) I turn one into a new Android TV box with Leanback Launcher and voice control mic for just $5.26!
As of 4/15/21, the little gooseneck mic I used in this video still works great but more expensive USB mics purchased since then, don't. For best results, get something that looks exactly like the mic shown. Also, LeanbackOnFire has been updated, several times. Get the latest (4/15/21), LeanbackOnFire_v1.25-release.apk, from: github.com/tsynik/LeanbackLau...

    If you have boxes with Android 7, please watch dai.ly/x81bjyc MBOX Ultimate Upgrade Secrets on Dailymotion. Most of what's revealed there should work on your boxes. So, if you're not familiar with Dailymotion, know that instructional videos are muted there by default. You have to unmute them using the speaker icon on the taskbar located at the bottom of the video player. Otherwise, there will be no sound. Also, HD Quality is set to 144p by default. To make the video watchable, you have to increase HD Quality to at least 480p using the Settings menu at the top right of the video player. Go figure... At least the videos are not censored. Regarding wireless microphones, I own several air mouse remotes with built-in voice control microphones. G20 (less than $10 US) is my favorite, but all of the USB voice control remotes I've tried work fine. Stay away from similarly advertised BT voice control remotes for Android TV. None of the ones I've tried, excepting the BT remote that comes with Amazon Fire TV sticks, work very well. That one works great, but you need a Fire TV stick to take full advantage of it. Good luck! Thank you for your kind comments. They're very much appreciated.

I have another question about why my MX Q PRO tv boxes with android 7.2 keeps restarting after I installed the new launcher updates. It happens every time I open an application ,sometimes it stayed for a minute and then it restart again, I can make it work stable.I will appreciate it if you can help me with this process. @@isaiah9696 1. Have you updated Google Play services (get the latest from apkmirror.com, NOT Google Play Store) and installed Google.apk as shown in the videos? It's doubtful that Google.apk would have been factory installed. If you haven't done those two things, I would start there. 2. Problem occurs with all launchers or just some? It's hard to believe that the ATV launcher could be causing any problems whatsoever. It even works fine on my old MXQ with Android 4.4.2. 3. Problem occurs with all apps or just some? If just some, which ones? 4. Assuming that you have updated Google Play services, and that you have installed Google.apk, and that you have tried more than one alternate launcher, and that the problem occurs with all apps, on both boxes, then the next thing I would suspect are cracked solder joints where the power cords connect inside the AC adapters. If you wiggle the power cords, can you make the boxes restart or shut off completely? If so, that's the problem. If not, then it's NOT the AC adapters. Try a different version of Google Play services. Google Play services is updated every few days. Given the trouble you're experiencing, I'd stay away from new versions targeting Android 11. Might be best to try something tried and true, requiring Android 6+, targeting Android 9. 5. Hope this helps. When you get to the bottom of this problem, please leave a post designed to help others. Good luck! Thanks for commenting.

    Please watch dai.ly/k2o5azuTmeQerLwTPFH MXQ Upgrade Secrets Part 3 on Dailymotion. It's your best bet for MXQ with Android 4.4.2. Results are Fast and Great with capital letters, absolutely amazing! So, if you're not familiar with Dailymotion, know that instructional videos are muted there by default. You have to unmute them using the speaker icon on the taskbar located at the bottom of the video player. Otherwise, there will be no sound. Also, HD Quality is set to 144p by default. I got Haystack TV Version 3.88 from Aptoide TV v5.0.3. Unlike phone installs, where the final step indicates "creating desktop shortcut," no shortcut to the Haystack TV app is created on a TV box running phone/tablet launchers. This is true even for new TV boxes running Android 9 Pie. Unless you prefer to navigate through Settings/Apps/Haystack, you'll need the Official Google Leanback Launcher, the Leanback on Fire Launcher, or one of the two ATV launchers to find it.

    If the HaystackTV and PlutoTV apps aren't showing in Leanback Launcher, it's because they're not installed on the box. To get PlutoTV, open a browser and type in: download PlutoTV. To get HaystackTV, open a browser and type in: download HaystackTV. If you get them from PlayStore, they should install automatically. If you get them from apkpure, or apkmirror, or similar download sites, use FileBrowser to install them. The MXQ Pro MBOX in the video has Android 6. Here's how to do it on Android 7 and above: Navigate to Settings, Apps, Leanback on Fire, Permissions. Once in the App Permissions window, click on the (i) App info button located all the way to the right of the app name. Once in the App info window, navigate down to Home App (No) item and click on that. It changes to Home App (Showing the current default). Click on that and then choose Leanback on Fire from the list of currently installed launchers to instantly make it the new default. Back all the way out, then press the Home button on your remote to see the results. In the event these instructions don't work for you then download BaronKiko's LauncherHijackV4.03.apk from github.com. Works every time. Thanks for asking!

    According to alibaba.com there are hundreds of manufacturers of MXQ Pro TV boxes. Those manufacturers may have all started with the same recipe, but experience shows the boxes they cook up are very different. MXQ is not a brand name. It's just a generic term like pizza. Miracast settings are built into many MXQ/Android 4.4.2 firmwares, and how-to use them is shown in the episode of MBOX Frustrated User Guide titled "Making Do with MXQ." If your MBOX doesn't have a Miracast setting, then download AirScreen - AirPlay & Cast & Miracast 1.9.1 from APKmirror.com. There are currently four variants. If necessary (and it shouldn't be on an old MXQ with Android 4.4.2), I'd start with this one: www.apkmirror.com/apk/ionitech/airscreen-airplay-miracast/airscreen-airplay-miracast-1-9-1-release/airscreen-airplay-cast-miracast-1-9-1-android-apk-download/ Thanks for commenting!

    Both my MXQ and MXQ Pro 4K work perfectly with 2.4G (USB) wireless keyboards. I have at least 4 different 2.4G (USB) keyboards here. They all have trackpads. They all work perfectly. But Bluetooth wireless keyboards generally do NOT work on low end TV boxes, because even though advertising might specify Bluetooth, they tend NOT to have it. Manufacturers treat product specifications they way cooks treat recipes. When they don't have a specified ingredient, or if it's too expensive, they substitute something else, or just leave it out. Good luck! Thanks for commenting. Please like and subscribe as it really helps the channel.

If you've never visited DailyMotion, then depending on what browser you use (Chrome works best) you may have to unmute the volume to get sound and for a nice, sharp picture, you may have to adjust the playback resolution. Volume control is on the scrub bar at the bottom of the player and resolution control/HD Quality is in the Settings menu at the top right of the video player. Thanks for asking!

    before peopel starting doing random flashing. from what i know there are at least 2 different version of that box if we just ignore the different ram sizes. the s905 and the 905x. those firmwares are not interchangeable. for the 905 non x there is only that android 5.1 firmware available and its utter crap. as a media player nothing works properly even if you update kodi. so i ending up using coreelec for some time now and just upgraded to 9.2.0. would not suggest that combo for flawless 4k experience for different reasons but 1080 no problems at all.

    Did you even watch this video? It's not about random flashing firmware. It's not about boxes running Android 5 or 4. It's about adding voice control and Leanback app support to boxes already running Android 6 or greater. Your solution, CoreELEC, doesn't support voice control and can't handle Leanback apps. How is that better? And, why would someone even need CoreELEC on a box that already handles Kodi 18.5? It adds nothing.

  • @tnxmatze

    @tnxmatze

    @@LawrencePina of course i did but i probally should have things more clear. the reason i mentioned flashing is because peopel see that box, see android 6 and try to update their box with android 5 installed. you find peopel bricking theirs in many cases. i have that box with android 5.1. i can only imagine the system is as bad as it is with android 5, also your titel gives the idea of some sort of an update but i would guess for most of them click on that titel voice control doesnt matter. so the thing is on my box many settings just dont work, like changing refreshrates as an example, especially with kodi. so coreelec is the only solution for that. it makes it almost useless as media player. you should take it as additional information for random peopel watching this video.

    More than likely a system update changed the default on-screen keyboard app from whatever it was to Gboard, which, in my experience, doesn't always work on all boxes with all streaming apps. Just go to Settings, Keyboard, and change current keyboard to "Remote controller input method," or Android keyboard (AOSP). Choosing Google Indic keyboard (usually there on Android 9 TV boxes) also fixes this problem. If worse comes to worse, you can always download one or more replacement keyboard apks from apkpure.com or apkmirror.com and try some of them. The big advantage of Gboard (assuming that you can get it to come out when you click the search icon in a streaming app) is that it allows you to search using voice control. Most of the other keyboard apks do not.

  • @LawrencePina

    @LawrencePina

    2 жыл бұрын

    The powers that be have recently decided that KZread apps shall no longer work on Android 4.4.2. Thanks Google! If Android 4.4.2 is what you've got than it might be time to replace that box with an H96 Max RK3318. Why? 1. They're ridiculously cheap. 2. They come with either Android 9 or 10 and the latest firmware updates can be downloaded right from www.h96tvbox.com/. 3. I give the H96 TV box company a 100% score for truth in advertising. Repeat: 100% score meaning that every advertised feature is actually present in the box I purchased (right from AliExpress) and works perfectly. Can't say that about the last Tanix box I purchased. Can't say that about the last Mecool box I purchased! 4. Both the AC adapter and the remote control from my old MXQ work perfectly on the H96 Max RK3318 I purchased. With these extra parts I can transfer the box from one TV to another without having to unplug the adapter or move the remote. 5. It's the only TV box we own where CEC actually works properly with our LG and Samsung TVs. 6. Bottom line: It's not the fastest box we own, but for the price, I can't fault it. On the other hand, if your box has Android 5 or greater, then KZread should still work. If not, then go to Settings, Apps, KZread, Uninstall Updates, "Do you want to do that?" - Yes! Ok! Next, visit apkmirror.com (NOT Google Play Store) and search for "KZread for Android TV." Download an armeabi-v7a (NOT arm64-v8a, not X86) variant that supports your version of Android. Install it using File Browser, not App installer. Problem should be solved. You can also try searching for the tablet version of KZread. Just enter "KZread" (leave out the for Android TV) and do the same. Both versions should work for you. There are also at least two Smart versions of KZread that should work on boxes having Android 5 or greater. You can search for those and try them as well. Good luck! Thanks for commenting. Generally speaking, yes! Both wired and wireless models have always worked perfectly for me. Regarding the USB microphone, though. I was wrong about that. The little goose neck mics shown here (I have two of them, bought at different times from different vendors) continue to work perfectly but more expensive USB mics I've bought since then do NOT work on any of my TV boxes. So, if you want voice search capability, stick to the little goose neck mic, or even better try a G20 air mouse remote. Good luck. Thanks for asking!

    "Whenever..." suggests that you do get the box to restart eventually. I would have been nice if you said how. It also would have been helpful if you indicated the make and model of your MBOX, what version of Android is on it, what version of GooglePlay services is on it, etc. Lacking that info, many boxes have a power key setting. In Android 10 on my Mecool KM9, power key definition can be set to SUSPEND, SHUTDOWN, and RESTART. Try changing it. Many boxes also have HDMI CEC settings. If CEC is ON, try switching it OFF. Switch OFF CEC in your TV settings, and also in the settings of any other devices you have connected to the TV. Most of the HDMI cables supplied with TV boxes don't fully support CEC. Some don't work at all. Some cause startup malfunctions similar to what you've described. The hang up could be a result of the box failing to start your other devices. It sits there waiting for them to start, but the HDMI cable it's connected to can't so it. Common problem! Hope these tips help you. Thanks for asking. Please remember to like and subscribe as it really helps the channel.

    The mini desktop USB microphone that I used in this video is first shown at 0:13 and shown again at 8:39. Regardless of what anyone tells you, any USB microphone that you already own should work on any MBOX having Android 6 or above, provided that you plug it in, update Google Play services, and install google.apk. If you don't already have an external USB microphone, then any USB air mouse remote with built-in microphone should also work. Just plug in its transceiver, update Google Play services, and install google.apk. Unlike external USB microphones, USB air mouse remotes with built-in microphones also work on boxes with Android 4.4.2. They're not particularly responsive on boxes with Android 4.4.2, but they do work! G20 is the model to get. G20s work great on every box I own - Android 4.4.2 to Android 10. Bluetooth air mouse remotes with built-in microphones haven't worked very well for me. Good luck. Thanks for commenting!

    1. Try upgrading Google Play services. Get the latest for your version of Android OS from apkmirror.com. 2. These boxes don't have very much storage space. It's important to uninstall all of the nonfunctional apks. Leave at least 4 GB free storage space so that those apps that do work will have room to work. 3. ATV launcher (from Canada) also works well on this box. It's newer, less buggy than Leanback on Fire launcher, and you may like it better. 4. Has the firmware been replaced with an incompatible version? If that's the case, you'll have to reinstall the original firmware to get the WiFi working again. If that's not what happened, then try resetting the box to factory defaults and see what happens. If you don't have the original firmware, then you could set up an inexpensive WiFi repeater (about $10 US when ordered from AliExpress) behind the box and connect to it by wire using an ethernet cable. Watch MBOX WiFI Problems Part 1 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qq6FsriYgLm6e84.html and also MBOX WiFi Problems Part 2 for details on how to set that up. Good luck. Thanks for commenting!

    There at least two official KZread apps - one for Android OS and one for Android TV OS. There are also (unofficial?) SmartKZread apps. To see what works on your box: 0. If you haven't already done so, download and install the LeanbackonFire launcher as shown in the video. 1. Download both Aptoide and AptoideTV from apkpure.com. 2. Try installing AptoideTV. If that doesn't work, install and launch Aptoide. You don't need both versions of Aptoide, just one or the other, preferably AptoideTV. AptoideTV should work perfectly with the LeanbackonFire launcher. 3. Choose My apps/Available Updates/KZread. Also check for other versions of KZread. Even though AptoideTV may report that this version has not been tested on your box, it doesn't mean that it won't work. You'll have to install it and see for yourself. 4. Remember that Mediabox launcher does not show leanback apps in the app drawer. If Mediabox launcher is all you have, you'll have to use settings/apps/name of app to launch them.

    Assuming this is an ordinary failure and NOT the result of someone having installed incompatible firmware, then you should easily be able to restore the box to factory defaults using the toothpick method. There are many videos showing how that's done. There's a reset button inside the A/V jack. You just unplug power. Keep that button pressed with a toothpick. Reconnect power and don't release the toothpick until you see the green, Android robot booting up. After that, just follow the onscreen instructions. Watch the videos showing how to restore a TV box to factory defaults using a toothpick. It's easy. It only takes a few minutes. On successful reboot, install the upgrades shown in MBOX Frustrated User Guide and you'll have a really great working box. Good luck. Thanks for asking!

    Subscription apps are not my thing, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work, so long as you install a Plex variant matching the version of Android installed. As of 12/31/21, the latest Plex: Stream Movies & Live TV variants available from apkmirror.com require either Android 5 or greater, or Android 6 or greater. Suffice it to say that the variant requiring Android 6 or greater is not going to work on boxes with Android 5. And, the variant requiring Android 5 or greater is not going to work on boxes with Android 4.4.2. You'll need a much earlier version for that. Good luck. Thanks for commenting.

    Not something I would try but since you asked: mxqproject.com/tutorial-s805-update-the-mxq-s805-box-to-android-5-1-lollipop/ Before doing this read what others have said carefully. At worst, you may brick the box. At best, you probably lose Wi-Fi and in some cases, even the use of your remote control. If you're not willing to give up those things, why not just follow the MBOX Frustrated User Guide procedure? It makes a big difference. Nothing stops working. Even the remote works better than ever. How to connect Bluetooth headphones

  • @LawrencePina

    @LawrencePina

    4 жыл бұрын

    Original MXQ specifications do not call for embedded Bluetooth hardware. That's why Bluetooth accessories generally don't work on MXQ boxes. Usually, there's no Bluetooth chip on MXQ motherboards and no Bluetooth system support in MXQ firmware. That having been said, it might be possible to add Bluetooth audio out to such a box, using a wired USB dongle intended for use with the 1/8" (3.5 mm) analog audio out jack on a PC. These generally cost less than $5, with free shipping. To make the TRRS audio cable you need, watch and "MXQ Audio Secrets, Parts 1 and 2." Make sure the cable you've hacked works on a stereo as shown in those videos. When you're certain that the cable you've hacked works, unplug the stereo end and adapt it to the 1/8" (3.5 MM) audio in jack on the Bluetooth dongle. Power the dongle from a USB port on your MXQ or with a phone charger, and assuming that the device supports blind Bluetooth pairing (big assumption), you should be able to use Bluetooth earbuds and headsets on your MXQ. Nice project, but I'm not sure that it's worth it. Even if you get it to work, it'll be Bluetooth audio output only. You still will not be able to use Bluetooth input devices, like controllers, keyboards, and remotes. Thanks for asking!

Just bought a $2.78 (with free shipping) "BLS-TX3 USB BlueTooth 5.0 Wireless USB Transmitter Adapter 3.5mm AUX Stereo Jack Cable For Headphone Speaker" from AliExpress and tried it on my MXQ. Unbelievable! It works great. Not only that, but it worked right away. No difficulty whatsoever. Turned on my MXQ and tuned into an Internet radio station. Plugged the BT adapter into USB 1 on the MXQ. Observed the adapter's blue LED blinking. Turned on my BT earphones. They paired automatically within 30 seconds. Observed the BT adapter's blue LED now on on solid. Plugged the included 3.5mm audio cable all the way into the BT adapter but only about about 1/2 way into the MXQ's A/V jack (NOT all the way in). Left and right stereo came through the BT earphones loud and clear. Perfect! First time ever on my MXQ that something worked right away. It actually took longer to write this update than it did to get the thing working!

  • @LawrencePina

    @LawrencePina

    2 жыл бұрын

    Because you're downloading it from the wrong place (Google Play Store?) Find the About menu item in Settings and note the version of Android installed on your box. Then, visit apkpure.com/search?q=netflix and download a 32-bit xapk package compatible with that version of Android. So, if all you've got is Android 5, don't bother downloading any package requiring Android 7+, because it's not going to work. Once you've found and downloaded a Netflix variant matching your version of Android, use File Browser, not App Installer to install it. Most of these procedures are covered in other episodes of MBOX Frustrated User Guide, so you might benefit by watching those as well. Good luck! Thanks for commenting.

    Leanback on Fire alpha version 2 is not perfect. It (like many other Android apks) does crash from time to time. But in my opinion, it's still the best Android launcher out there. Hopefully, the developer is working on it. In the meantime, just restart the box and it should work fine again. Three tips: First - When editing Leanback on Fire favorites. be sure to use button navigation mode. If you use mouse mode, you'll be able to make choices, but they will not take. And, even when you've used button navigation mode to edit LOF favorites, you sometimes have to launch an app or at least cycle the home button on your remote before they take. Second - Launcher Hi-Jack is up to version 4.0.2. Make sure you have the latest version. Third - To cycle through all of the launchers on your box simply by pushing and momentarily holding the Home button (on your remote) run Launcher Hi-Jack and make sure that hardware button detection is checked in settings (Click on the 3 dots at the upper right corner of the screen, choose Settings from the app menu, check all but the last box). Another Leanback launcher that you might wan to install is the ATV launcher (from Canada). Alice UX Lite also works, but doesn't support leanback apps. It's fun to have them all on the box. When you tire of one, just press Home on your remote and easily switch to the other. Hope this helps. Thank you for the feedback!
