UPDATE: Season 3 included some changes to these mechanics. I have added my findings to the description, but here is the summary: Using a voice line adds 5 seconds to the mute timer (down from 8), and the mute threshold is now 10 seconds (down from 16). This means the new optimal spam timing is [use 3 voice lines, wait 15 seconds, repeat]. However, the mute duration still ramps up; it just happens after about 18 voice lines now (up from 12). So while this system is significantly more generous, you still cannot spam indefinitely.

Honestly, rather then this interesting yet convoluted system they made up to help deal with voice line spam. They could just add an ingame option to either allow, restrict (like the current system), or flat out remove the ability to hear voiceline spam from others. It might take more time, but it will be a good middle ground for everyone as there are players who actually enjoy the silly voiceline spam.

You can. You just have to "Squelch" the person that's spamming. It's under "Mute"

even just cataloging these things I feel is very important, let's us slowly decipher what's going on in the back-end of Overwatch and it's helped me reason behind certain changes like the Tracer rewinding without gaining hp after being damaged. I'll just say the scenario for those that like to dissect these things as well. Be tracer > Take damage > receive healing > Recall back before you took damage > Will you still be damaged or will you be full health GL hunting fellas :D

I think it's bugged rn. You are a Tracer at full HP and get meleed (-30) leaving you at 120HP. You grab a healthpack and are now back to full HP. CURRENTLY, if you recall after a few seconds you'll be back to 130 HP. It was never like this and although it technically makes sense it's most likely a bug. As mentioned above Recall doesn't remove HP so it is a bug.

The Tracer thing is not bugged, and Luigi- is right that it does not remove HP. How it works is very simple: when you press rewind, the game checks your current HP, and your HP from exactly 3 seconds ago. It then sets your HP to whichever of those two values is higher. People think it's a bug because you have to be damaged at the "3 second" mark, get healed, then take damage again, THEN press rewind. People wrongly assume that rewind checks their health over the entire course of 3 seconds - it simply doesn't. When using rewind the game is entirely blind to however high your HP was in the 3 seconds between those two HP-checks. It is intentionally coded to work this way, and always has been like this since launch. Through happenstance, a bunch of people are just hearing about it now and the rumour is being carried along with it that it's a bug. I've heard countless long-time Tracer mains confirm that it's always worked like this.

@@LoudWaffle ​ there seems to be a pretty special problem among overwatch players of not understanding their own game, even at the highest ranks. i’m relatively new to the game, and coming from a background of other competitive games, ive been really surprised to see how even top 500 level players seem to be clueless about so many mechanics and interactions of the game. it’s really weird. the only other game i’ve played where the community has this problem is nba 2k, where it’s debatably even worse than it is in overwatch

Crouching at the same time as using the voice line is a really good visual cue. That was really clever

I remember the first time they changed voice line spam. It used to be 4 voice lines on a single short cooldown but after the comms wheel update it got cut to 3 individual and longer cooldowns. I wish we could get the original back that shit was so funny

This can be used as an exploit also. You can intentionally spam a voice line to be muted this will also mute the voice line ultimate alert so the enemy is caught off guard more. Confirmed with "Bob do something!" on Ash.

I friend got ulted by an orisa yesterday because I didn’t hear the voice line but my subtitles mentioned it, wasn’t really paying attention.

My favorite spam is on Brigitte, its "Scandinavian style? No, it has to be/Scandinavian style? No, it has to be/Scandinavian..." the best part is, the loop time is long enough that the game doesn't stop you from spamming it (except for other players, i guess)

what they did is what many devs seem to unfortunately do: remove control from user and not tell tell them what they are doing, while assuming and homogenizing what users want to do it for them without permission or asking or any choice whatsoever software is devolving

I always spam "knock knock" on doomfist. The laugh at the end is glorious.

I've found that the most effective way to spam voice lines, is to choose the longest one possible. That way you can min/max your noise-to-silence ratio, and get the most out of your voice lines before you get muted

I was wondering why I don't hear spammers like I used to :/ I'm a veteran voice line spammer myself, and the best voice line in the game in my opinion is Hanzo's "duty is the only destiny I know", but it's best to spam it like this "duty, duty, duty is the only destiny I know".

Meanwhile Blizzard's line is never muted, Reaper, please : "BUY, BUY, BUUUY"

You won't have to wait long for thr workshop to come back since it's confirmed by the devs that it's returning in season 3. I'm excited!

I did some testing with a friend when this was first discovered and an extra thing is that I'm pretty sure using different voicelines sets seperate timers (tho they all get blocked by the same mute) meaning you should be able to cycle through and not hit a mute.

Blizzard: Oh a funny and harmless mechanic that players could just mute by themselves? No! We must mute it ourselves!!

I don't think so, since voicelines/comms (like ult status and hello/thank you) are separate from ult lines and the normal character chatter. Typically an ult line is cancelled when the character ulting gets stunned/killed right after using it.

I can remember in ow1, Ana’s “in the desert” (not sure exactly what it’s called) voice line was long enough that you could say it and by the time it finished your mute timer had got to zero. You could basically chain the voice line throughout the whole match

I think a really interesting video can be made regarding the calculations the game uses to determine the damage dealt to the breakable panels in the spawn ships. Each hero's weapons seem to do completely unjustified damage to the panels. Mcree needs to shoot it multiple times whereas lucio can one shot them. Why not just give the panels a hidden health bar and use the hero's base damage to calculate it?

spamming voice lines is the purpose of other people hearing you. we dont care if we hear it ourselves the point was for others to hear it. that's like equipping a skin but only you can see it and everyone else sees you as the default.

7 years of the game existence and I still don't know what "they say".

Voice line spam between Reins is courtesy as well as taunting. If I see two Reins not spamming at each other, it's because they're lvl1 endorsements and typing insults in match chat. Like Tbagging, it's a contextual language that makes the game more fun and social. If the enemy Junkrat doesn't respond to my DIPSTICK, you can assume he's lvl1 endorsement and raging at his team.
