Mutable Instruments

Музыка

Rings is a resonator. It takes any input (instead of just gates to strike the resonator, like karplus strong), and adds all kinds of charming musical sounds to it. Many people use it as a 'black box' without really resonating anything else but its internal resonator. However, this is because it sounds really good without anything else.
I stumbled on a Rings easter egg the other day, which included a list from creator Emilie Gillet which contains 10 examples of cool Rings patches that never made it to any video (at that time). I did eight of them in this video so I hope you hear something new and something worth trying out. And the easter egg, obviously, which is a big hidden feature. Here's the link tot the document.

NOTE: you can exit easter egg mode by repeating the procedure to enter it.

Couldn't agree more. It's such a beautiful module and I bet the originals will always keep their value.

I never knew Rings had that easter egg setting. Brilliant! Something new to experiment with.

"Long Signal Chain Excitement." That event chain is hilarious. My Rings module arrives in a few hours, I'm getting updates from the couriers now... Can't wait to try it out.

I really like your videos! There are so many tubers making modular videos that it's hard to be unique. But you always manage to bring something new. Great work! I think I need a Rings module now.. :)

Rings is integrated in my Shared System since the very start. This module matches very well with it's Make Noise siblings. It's just lacking a proper pink/white noise source but I think Woggelbug may supply that in a certain way. I love the RS-09 Easter Egg setting, with some distorsion and random step LFO on the drive amount.

Well, if you move the Ochd down into the 4HP spare, you have room for a Kinks :). I think the Wogglebug can create colorful noise by speeding it up with a DPO oscillator 1 out and then random out to the V/oct of oscillator 2 (or one of the FMs). The top oscillator outs of the WB probably also produce usable noise too.

Hilarious, I was just re-visiting those 10 examples tonight, and I said "I should suggest to Cinematic Labs to do a video on these". Figures, you already did. ;-)

I wish this didn't look as frightening and complicated to me as a pilot's flight deck, and I had the slightest clue what was happening here, but it's fascinating to watch and your videos are superb.

Sorry I missed this Nic, I've been running the channel with notifications accidentally disabled two years ago. A very late but genuine 'thank you' for stopping by. This is indeed a complicated video and it's indeed a bit like navigating with an alien spaceship. But it's wonderful to be 'in the zone' and compose with real voltage. It's not as hard as it looks, but it's a bit like doing easy things the hardest way possible.

I think for the second one (Feed back Rings' output into its FM input) she meant the frequency input, so you can still have it playing melodies with the V/O input.

Now that's a fun selection of 'other things to do with Rings'; I particularly like the 'string synth' Easter Egg. Given that the linked web page has a number of other suggestions for 'things to do with Rings' as well, might I request a few more of those be attempted and documented? Many thanks for the hard work; I enojoy your output.

  • @CinematicLaboratory

It's been a while but I think the glide comes from the MakeNoise Rene sequencer. There are a few notes in the sequence with glide enabled and the rest is automatic :).
