Mutable Instruments - One Last Look (Marbles | Rings | Veils | Plaits | Stages)

Музыка

These 5 Mutable Instruments modules were my leaping-off point into my Eurorack/Modular adventure in July 2021. Nearly 2 1/2 years later, and literally 100s of recorded tracks using Marbles + Rings + Plaits + Veils + Stages, and it's time to say goodbye to my dear, old friends.
I'll be keeping Plaits, though, for sentimental value - it was my first-ever Eurorack Oscillator. Plus, I really REALLY enjoy mis-pronouncing it and make y'all crazy :-)
This video is a tribute to these amazing modules, as they leave my studio headed towards new homes around the world. I will miss them, bigly.

Sell your kids before you sell your Eurorack. I've embraced my GAS addiction and thankfully Behringer does 280HP for just £215 which means I can keep stacking those little beauties and eat beans and wear hessian sacks

You don't even need to pay for a case or power. I use old cardboard boxes and duct tape to make the rack, thumb tracks instead of screws, then connect the power to a flying bus board. Then I use a fashionable upcycled power cord from a toaster to connect the system directly to the mains. The smoke and light show is a bonus.

I started with Eurorack right around the same time MI was shutting down. I was vaguely aware that they were not producing any new modules, but I didn’t realize they were stopping production entirely. After frantically shopping around and seeing it sold out everywhere, I managed to score a new Beads-which I LOVE. I must have gotten the very last one off the shelves.

Man, I regret selling classic Rings/Marbles/Plaits before. Now, purchased them again at a relatively reasonable price, and keeping them, not only are they aesthetically pleasing looking modulars, but they're just classic in the end.

Good comments, man .. yes, I also am overwhelmed with the features, of this collection, (having what you're showing here) .. I've got one old module (year 2012) that is very basic, and easily understood .. compared to the multi-mode (it's not menu diving, .. but rather button diving, for Mutables). I believe what happens is there is many randomized facets that can happen at once, .. to the point that the musical-like impact is smothered, or destroyed, in our hearing. IF I can discipline myself on concentrating on 2 or 3 features, avoiding my brain from overload, and .. alot of times .. and the musical result, is satisfactory .. to even quite good. They're all good modules .. but, Stages .. as you've pointed out, standing pretty tall, in it's abilities. I wonder if I won't learning more about Stages, .. for years. I believe that Calsynth has good clone substitutes, to almost all of MI's line, .. though, I don't own any of them, yet.

@@VisionsMusicGroup Hey, I'll check that out, sometime. Somehow, I missed your mention of ALA, .. which could serve in the same way. Yes, .. it's great that there are alternatives/substitutes. I'm sort of in the larger modular person, though .. even if does entail another skiff, or whatever. It CAN get busy enough where even the more spacious MI layouts are a bit too close together, with enough cables .. ah, but it's a compromise, after all.

Mutable clones were my first and still my favorite. After later makes great clones, had them for years, and the save a lot of space. Will say the Atumbra atom (elements clone is a bit annoying to use with so many tiny knobs though🙂I don’t care if the trend moves away from them, or the are used too much on KZread-Beauty stays beautiful!

  • @katelikesrectangles

be careful with the tiny clones, you might not think it matters yet but the space and layout makes so much difference to how pleasant these modules are to use

Smaller isn't necessarily better, just saying... Eurorack is already fiddly, going into the compact clones has its own irritations.

I did consider that for the MI clones, but how I use Marbles/Rings isn't with my sausage fingers; it's modulation sources, so hopefully this will work out. And it's not like I'm saving a ton of space. That is clearly a BS excuse :)

I agree. Get a bigger case or use less modules. Getting the small modules (imo) is trying to have your cake and eat it. Generally speaking ofc. For some people it is great I’m sure. I had a couple and sold them to get full size ones back. Of course, all the MI modules are available on VCV rack, if you get yourself an interface to use it with your physical rack.

  • @lommelinn
    @lommelinn5 ай бұрын

If I were you, I wouldn't sell Veils and Plaits. Veils is just useful in every rack you will ever have and if you like Plaits and exchange it for a smaller clone, you may find that good quality knobs and space is more important on some modules than hp. I ran into this issue, and now I regret selling it.

100%. Veils v2 can’t be beat at or near its size, unless looking specifically for character VCAs or LPGs. Smaller Plaits clones are all awkward to use. And the only Rings clone even worth having (Rangoon) is barely any smaller than the original.

You (both) may be right about Veils, but I mostly use it as an Attenuator so it seems like wasted potential in my situation. The thought was to replace it with actual attenuator/attenuverter modules. I'm interested to see how uRings works out.

Just use the free virtual versions in VCV! I still use Rings and Clouds all the time. There are a few polyphonic Plaits clones, and even a polyphonic Clouds now. Veils isn't in the official collection but someone made a build if you really want it. I have a patch at the moment with 16 Rings into 32 channels of poly Clouds, possibly a bit much, but it's the kind of thing I do because I can 😂

I wonder if seeing Mutable modules will be like selling an original 909 or 303… probably not but they might at least retain good value. Personally I have a few but I no longer find them interesting and not playable like other brands can be. Beads is excellent though and a great clouds v2.
