Thank you for linking the kit. You kept naming off the components, and all I could think was "I have some of this stuff, but the rest is going to be a nightmare to source." I hate trying to buy individual parts for projects like this, because you end up buying from 8 different shops, all charging shipping fees. That's why kits like this are so much more convenient and affordable, unless you're buying in bulk to build or sell your own kits. Great content. I didn't even know I wanted this cart reader.

I've been looking into making one of these for a while now and even ordered some of the parts but I was really confused as to the general build process. And then you uploaded this video and all of my worries are gone. Thanks for making a perfect guide and giving me the confidence I need to get into the retro modding/DIY electronics hobby. Won't be able to get some of the parts until late February at the earliest due to AliExpress shipping times, but nevertheless, I truly appreciate what you have done here.

It took me until the cart reader test for my brain to finally go "Wait a minute. Leaf Green doesn't have a battery. Only Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald do, and it's only used for the clock. The save isn't reliant on a battery."

I've built a V3 a couple months ago and it's awesome. I mostly use it to transfer save files between my SNES cartridges and my analogue pocket. However, when sourcing all the parts to build, you'll likely end up with enough parts to build a few of them. I currently have two extra ones available to sell, includes 4GB SD card, a USB cable and printed case. Message me if interested!

while you're correct in saying the GB/GBC color games usually do have a battery to keep the save, most (if not all) GBA games don't use the save battery for the save, its usually for a real time clock. the leafgreen you had in frame doesn't even have a battery in it :P

This was a really fun soldering project, and it's really satisfying to be able to use my own copies of games on Everdrives and MiSTer. But one problem I had: It apparently fried my Retro-Bit copy of Holy Diver (mapper 268, which isn't supported anyway). Smoke even came out. So it might not be good to use on repros. YMMV, though.

Great seeing you make one of my most recent builds. Thank you for the tip on the female pin header trimming, as that was a PITA for me. Did you by chance have any issues dumping Famicom games on that slot? My slot from AliExpress was a bit sus and I've ordered replacements, but I thought I'd ask you just out of curiosity.

Something I picked up from @MarkFixesStuff when you need to hold something in place temporarily and flip it over to solder. Use a small piece of bluetac to keep it secure. I found it very useful when I recapped my Saturn, it was the revision with all surface mount capacitors.

@@bricethompson1922 I don't think you can do that directly, this can be pretty power hungry and the wiki highly reccomends you don't plug it into USB ports on devices and instead plug it directly into a power only phone charger, and even if the MiSTer was providing enough power it would need some code to read games from this, but you could dump the carts onto the SD card on this, then plug the SD card into a computer and transfer the roms/saves to the MiSTer over the network or by plugging in the MiSTer SD card also and copy them.
