This song sort of puts the emphasis on the bass, but Alex and Neil as usual nail their parts as well. The cool thing about Rush is you can listen to their songs three different times focusing on each individual player and come away impressed by each of them, every time.

Those are triggered by Neil, via midi interface with various parts of the kit. In this case his cymbal(s). He also uses a couple pads, and a trigger by his hi-hat and double bass pedal. If you notice, the piano parts are in sync with Neil's cymbal strikes.

That was what I thought at first, but I don't think it's possible. His traditional Sabian cymbals don't have triggers (no wires) so that isn't it. Whenever you see footage of his left foot he's keeping time with quarter notes. The only possibility is the little black trigger by the snare but he has snare hits exactly in time with the keyboard sounds. I've watched about 7 different live versions now and Alex is stuck by his pedals through that section every time even though his guitar sound isn't changing, so I'm convinced (as "Free Beat" says) that it's Alex and that he doesn't trigger every one, but instead triggers 2-3 sequences.

@@geebjen Neil has extensive triggers built into his kit. Many of the toms are actually shells built around triggers. I do think you're right about the cymbals in this case, though. Neil has several foot triggers, so it's probably either Alex's or Neil's feet.

I don't think so, they didn't show it, but I think Alex was triggering piano chords from his Taurus pedal rack

My favourite Rush instrumental is "Where's My Thing / Here it Is!", and its best video would be "Live in Dallas". Neil Peart has a great drum solo partway through the song.

They all have triggers, Peart included. Depending on the song and who is able to trigger for that song, gets the job...All their triggers are their own recordings, not someone else playing them for the recording. It's all RUSH, all the time! IMO Greatest band ever. 3 virtuosos...playing a 3hour long concert of perfection.

@@chriskangeter8993 Right, and they're Triggered sounds, not triggered sequences. Each individual sound has a manual action behind it. (AFAIK the swing accompaniment in the drum solo is the only "not played 1:1" piece of music.)

They don't play to tracks. But Neil the drummer would have e-pads with changable samples in them. So he could change what sound he'd get when he'd hit them.

Yay!! You are falling for Rush. We love it! 2112 is a 7 part suite, a little over 20 minutes long and tells the story of a man who lives in a dystopian society, finds a guitar, in the year 2112. Definitely a masterpiece, would recoend the pfficial Rush video because it is comic book style and includes liner notes and the lyrics. There are two parts of the suite that are instrumental but would recommend watching in its entirety so you get the tone of the song. This album also was a defining moment in their careers. Their 4th album and was on the verge of being dropped by the record label. They were told they needed to write more radio friendly songs, because their previous album did not do well commercially. They decided to go out on their terms and answered with 2112. The album is not full concept however side A was. When you are ready, it's a must. My personal fave is Natural Science which you should also do. Lol

Back in the day ABC's World News Now would play Leave That Thing Alone over their scrolling weather forecast. Long time ago.

Rush aren't your usual rock band, once you get around the fact they aren't that stereotypical rock garbage, your mind opens up to what they were all about.

Jaco Pastorius!! Crazy licks!!

While not an instrumental 2112 has longer instrumental sections. It was meant to "answer" Label executives who with their contract up and dissapointing sales of their previous album, were pressuring them to produce more radio friendly singles. They decided instead continue to follow their own creative path and literally go out on their own terms. They created a 21min song abt an imaginary oppressive civilization that crushes creativity to maintain control. The song and album caught fire by word of mouth, sold great, and bought the freedom from any future Label interference/pressure. It's their "magnum opus" and has some of Alex Lifeson's best guitar work. Cheers.

Please check out the precursor (or Part 1) of this song, called “Where’s My Thing?”. The live version from Dallas, A Clockwork Angels tour is the best! Geddy Lee goes mental on that song and Neil Peart has a short Drum solo in the middle! It rocks like heck!!

One thing about Rush is that they have these hilarious intro videos for their tours full of inside jokes and an incredible of self degrading humor. 2112 is a story. My first toe dippin into this Talented Trio. Xanadu Live from Exit Stage Left from the early 80’s really showcases their talents. Geddy and Alex with double necks and Geddy’s is a guitar and bass. Shows how 3 can sound like 6.

Nice to start the day with some Rush. I am not a musician but you mentioned Geddy tucks his pinky in like a guitar player. Alex and Geddy met in junior high when they were 13 and both started playing guitar then. A few years later Alex started a band and they had a different bass player but this guy's mom didn't like him playing with these guys. LOL So, Geddy changed from playing guitar to playing bass. Geddy has also published a book on his bass guitars. Cheers

I love that Alex was once abducted by Ricky in an episode of the "Trailer Park Boys."

The Rush in Rio vid has this same song with more "in front" bass.

A lot of the sounds (piano) are triggered by either foot pedals or the drums. Neil adds a lot of sampled sounds during his drumming. On occasion, they'll have someone playing a keyboard off-stage. It's for specific songs where keyboards were recorded by them and mixed in. The end of The Spirit of Radio comes to mind. But those songs are few. The vast majority is Geddy, Alex, and Neil working at 110% to fill out the soundstage.

@@Bass17yl Maybe not in the latter part of their career, but for a few tours earlier on, there was someone off-stage pounding the keyboard for the end of The Spirit of Radio. I was watching them in an arena, on the side, about halfway up, and watched this guy playing the keyboards at the end of the song. It's that keyboard you hear playing that single chord as a rhythm after the lead guitar at the end of the song. The man was tucked away on the right-hand side. You could only see him if you were on the right and elevated a bit. That was probably in the late 80s at the time. It was a great concert, btw.

@@bobcarn Fair enough. I’ve never heard of them doing this. They’ve always said in interviews that they never had other musicians and always wanted to do it all themselves. Maybe they decided that after trying a backstage keyboardist a couple of times?

@@Bass17yl I remember an interview with him saying that (maybe the same interview you're referring to?). I seem to remember him saying they really debated whether or not to have someone onstage with them, but decided against it because it was the three of them that record the albums and got the band to where it was, and it felt wrong to have someone else onstage who wasn't part of the band. I don't know how long they had someone "helping", but it was just a couple (or even the one) songs. I know after Permanent Waves, they recorded songs with the purpose of being able to duplicate them live. Well, for the most part. I remember at least one song on Moving Pictures (Witch Hunt) was not played live for a while until they got some technology that let them duplicate the studio mix. But then we jump ahead to 2012 and had Clockwork Angels where they didn't need to, but wound up putting a dozen string musicians onstage, which really gave an awesome sound to those songs. LOL

3:34 See all those pedals in front of Alex? That's a Moog Taurus Pedals foot operated synthesizer. Geddy has one also in front of him under his keyboards. Either Alex or Geddy will play it when they need keyboards, but Geddy is busy on bass. Or when they need bass, but Geddy is busy on keyboards.

You might also check out The Garden, by Rush. Its not bass-centric, or hard rocking its just a fantastic song (grab the lyrics before viewing). The guys in the band have all said its their favorite Rush song. Anyone with kids and friends can def. relate. Its hard to see or hear with a straight face. Lemme know...

Alex is playing (triggering) the piano via synth pedals on the floor while playing the guitar lick. Pretty much whenever you see one of them "fixed" to their mic/equipment area, they are either changing instrument effects (brief) or actually playing, with their feet. Very little (almost nothing historically, a bit more towards the end of their career together) was tracked.

I think you shoul check out Limbo, another great Rush insrumental.

Piano effects from Alex Lifeson synthesised foot pedals. In fact they all play triggers/sound effects etc
