@@ShawnTheDriver you gotta listen to the Ghost Note version!
The band was formed as a 10-piece group by Michael League in Denton, Texas, after his second year at the University of North Texas, in 2004, “Because I was so bad,” he recalled, “I didn’t place into any of the school ensembles. So Snarky Puppy was my way of getting to play.” The group has grown into an international super-band made up of "...a wide-ranging assemblage of musicians known affectionately as 'The Fam'." In more than 15 years since its founding, about 40 players have performed in "The Fam" on guitar, bass, keyboards, woodwinds, brass, strings, drums, and percussion, but six of the 10 members on the first studio album The Only Constant remain on the regular roster. Many past and present band members were students at the University of North Texas. As for who writes these melodies, it's probably Michael League, he's credited with the compisition. He wrote all the tracks on We Like It here with the exception of two I think. Another one he collaborated on.

Yesss brother! I never knew I needed a Flugelhorn solo in my life until I watched this! Love your reaction as always.... I agree with another commenter here. There's Tio Macaco (Just a blast of a song!), Sleeper (wow) and Jambone. Then I would suggest moving on to the Family Dinner Vol. 1 series of videos (You already watched the one from there with Lalah Hathaway). It's so fun to see them working with some amazing vocalists. I would recommend the two with Malika Tirolien, there's also one from Shayna Steele that floors me every time I watch it and one from Chante Cann that is so much fun!

I mean I played the trumpet for most of my childhood, and I know what it sounds, feels and looks like when you just can't reach those high notes. But I will never have the talent that he has, nor the knowledge of music theory to even attempt to improvise at his level.

Yes, he has a degree in clarinet performance from Queens College. Met him when he was doing a gig at Catalinas in Hollywood, back when I worked woodwind artist support in the 80s and 90s. Very gracious and kind man. While he's mostly known for playing bass these days, you can hear him doing some very finessed and restrained work on bass clarinet with Miles Davis on the Siesta soundtrack.
