As soon as he saw the lyrics and finds out this song is about Jonghyun, Sulli and Go Hara he is gonna love this song EVEN more. This song just hits sooooo powerfully. The song title itself 8 is a shoutout to infinity, as in she will infinitely remember their actions and memories that they shared. The dragon is meant to be Jonghyun and the girl in the white dress is Sulli. This animation was perfectly put together and this should get song of the year for the meaning and depth to it overall.

I know I am very late, but I also want to add on that Hara was the lizard I'm pretty sure because wasn't her animal a iguana?! And when I heard what this song was really about (I mean I already loved it to begin with) I fell in LOVE with it and now that I hear it I get a little teary eyed, the fact that fans hated on those beautiful people and not many people stood up for them was just messed up I hope that those Angels Rest in Peace!

IU never ceases to make music that touches the heart. So powerful. Yoongi's production and flow here also blended in seamlessly, and I love it. Such a powerful song.

As far as I heard, this song is for her best friend Sulli, who committed to suicide last year. The lyrics is about how to let someone who was very important to you go and go forward, keeping them im good memories

I interpret girl as sulli, lizard first gone as jonghyun and dragon as hara. Before the lizard was gone there is seen "electronic gadgets off" the the plane goes through storm and that lizard on window fall then iu wakeup seeing no lizard in real life in the glass vessel. When she comes out of door the white dress girl is shown and she can't be iu cause the airplane animation had mole on left cheek like iu but she didn't and that girl running carefree and jumping of the cliff running indicate Sulli and her sudden death, while she was falling a dragon comes which can be hara and she picks up sulli and flies to the island opposite in direction of IU's plane and iu being only to able to see the go away one by one with tears by

Yoongi's verse said "eternity is a sand castle" because like a sand castle it crumbles like a faint memory. "See you in this island after eternity" so it means even though the "sand castle" which is eternity crumbles they will still see each other because they whatever happens they will still remember.

(credits IUteamstarcandy) IU never said this song is about Jonghyun, Sullie or Hara. That's IU for you. She will never tell you the full story because she wants you to interpret it however you see fit. If you realized, IU always gives a broad description of her songs but never goes into detail and I really love her for that. It gives her song so many different meanings to different people. But after reading what she said about this song, I do believe in the theory that she wrote this song with her friends in mind. UEANAS saw IU living her best life during her Love Poem tour. But I fell like after all the concerts is when she truly feels the loss of her friends. IU told us to allow ourselves to feel down, really feel the sad emotions because we are all just humans. But I can't help but wonder if she's doing the same. I really hope with all her hectic schedules, she takes a moment for herself. This is why IU team is just as precious and important to me. Like what she said, she's just Jieun, but with all her team, they make IU. Knowing that IU has a tight relationship with her team really comforts me. I really hope nothing but happiness for IU and IU team.

Omg I didn’t even think about sulli ... this songs makes much more sense now thank you beeen! Fun fact: in the ma on the orange screen there is a writing that says “do you want to erase your memories? Yes or No” Also I read many translations and Yoongi verse was translated in “the word forever is just a sandcastle” meaning how fragile forever can be for us humans.

You can see why IU is considered South Korea's National Treasure mixed with SUGA who is iconic himself. This collaboration is a Masterpiece. It has an echo of sadness in it's upbeat melody while capturing in the lyrics so beautifully the sadness of ones missed , and precious memories of joy for the time spent together with hope for their happiness where they are. Pure Genius ! One of the best heartfelt reactions I have seen here. hard not to break down when I hear this, but not being on camera i can. Everyone grab the box of tissues.

I cried as soon as I heard the first line followed by "Forever Young" (which is a classic 80's song about the singer's brother's suicide). Then the title 8, on the side is eternity, and I knew it was about Jonghyun, Goo Hara, and Sulli. It's okay to cry, and cry on camera because we all felt it too.

And I cried again while watching this. The lyrics was so deep and I can feel how IU felt when her closest friend left her without goodbyes. The lizard is supposed to be jonghyun and the animated girl wearing a white dress is sulli. She sees them out of the airplane window as she recalls their memories together. But she needs to let go of the pain and sadness to be able to move on and live with only good moments with sulli and jonghyun and that’s when the lizard(Jonghyun) disappears from the real world with IU and becomes a “free dragon” in the animated scenes where sulli finds him after running through the black trees and jumps to-freedom I guess?-staying young forever in her memories. Her previous comeback song «Love Poem» was dedicated to her friend Sulli too

IU did the melody (not the beat) and the lyric, that's why the lyric seems to talk about Sulli, Jonghyun and Goo Hara. (I think he wrote his rap part tho) But IU said that the video and the lyric refers actually to the age "twenty-eight" of both, IU and Suga. "According to IU, the lyrics are a confession of the story of a twenty-eight year old using "using a virtual figure and various metaphors". It has a theme of "self-reflection."" So the person who she can never see anymore is her younger self but she will meet her again in her memories. That's why the song is a collaboration between her and Suga, since they are both 28 years old. But honestly I think both are true. It's about her younger self and her age AND about Sulli, Jonghyun and Goo Hara. I like to think that :) Sorry for writing so much omg.

I really love Suga’s production style. As expected, Jieun’s voice is so calming. After reading the lyrics, and knowing how much it must’ve hurt her personally to lose two of her best friends, hoping that they are not hurting anymore. Also, Suga rapping/singing is really calming as well.

Actually, I always love your reaction. But this one is my favorite because you try to find out the meaning of this song. Yes, this song is about iu losing her friends Sulli and Jonghyun. Jonghyun is the salamander (because he like salamander) if you see it the salamander that iu saw on the plane is lost because of the storm and then she woke up and looking for the salamander. And then iu is checking outside then the transition is showing a girl who wear a white dress (she is sulli) i know that because of the mole that iu had is not on her left cheek so i think she was another person which is sulli. Then the girl with white dress is jump and the salamander catch her and they were going together but to the opposite way of the plane that iu is in. i dont think anyone has talked about this yet so iu begins by being asked by the monitor if she wants to save all memories. she is then in a house that is similar to Sulli house where she was sadly lasted found. IU plays in the house with someone who we never see but we assume that it is sulli. Sulli is depicted as the animated girl. Then jonghun is depicted as the animated dragon as his nickname was "charmander". Then there is also Goo Hara who was the lizard because her nickname used to be "iguana". the song begins with her asking her friends if they are happy now away from the hate. then the mv ends with her sad at her friends being gone, then happy that she got to relive her memories with them, and then is finally angry as the lyrics "are you happy now" echo in the background as she addresses the haters asking them if they are happy with what they have done.

Piggybacking off of the theory that this song is about IU's friends who passed away due to suicide (Hara, Sulli, Jonghyun), this song might mirror those who are going through mental health issues. The song sounds uplifting and cheery at first, but once you interpret and understand the lyrics, the overall meaning is so much sadder. Those who may be struggling with mental health issues might put up a front and pretend they are happy, but if you get inside their thoughts, you realize that they are going through hardships we might not have ever imagined.

First off, the first time I watch the MV i felt somehow sad even tho the song has "upbeat/happy vibes". When I read the lyrics, it hits me hard and I cried.
