This is fantastic work, and a really great analysis. It is great that you have chosen look at some of Queen's earlier work, it should be analysed far more. The construction and thought that is placed into this music is meticulous, I would love to see more from Queen analysis. The mixing and every single note tells part of the story of the song. Queen's music is often very full, and filled with a lot of details, it is big with a lot of sound and very orchestral, but it is also so carefully constructed that everything fits into each other perfectly. It is busy but it is still usually very catchy and listenable. I think that is really difficult to achieve, it is something I think that Queen and The Beatles were really good at. Songs such as Good Fashioned Loverboy, Seaside Rendezvous, Good Company or Bring Back That Leroy Brown, are known as novelty songs, but I really love these Vaudeville and Ragtime songs from Queen. They have a completely infectious and playful throwback quality. Feel good type of music, is often more on the simplistic side, and Queen obviously did that as well. Personally, I think it is really difficult to make positive music that still interesting. People tend to attach more validity to melancholy music or songs with messages. It is similar in concept to how people tend to naturally find antagonist far more interesting as characters then a protagonist. A writer has to be really creative to construct an interesting protagonist. Brian May is really a thinking musician, he thinks about every note. Of course a lot of those brass and orchestral type of sounds were created with the Deaky amp. It is interesting that you will often find these types of clever guitar solos on Freddie Mercury's songs. I do think they challenged each other to think more creatively. Perhaps this might not be as interesting from instrumental perspective, but another reason why Queen were able to make these types of songs really work for them, is Freddie Mercury's singing. The amount of expression he added to these types of songs is something you do not hear from other vocalist to the same extend. He could really change the colour and tone of his voice to express the correct emotion. He sometimes changed his voice from word to word. It is sometimes easier to convey sadness or melancholy, conveying more nuanced positive themes such a playful, infectious and whimsical quality in the voice is really difficult. I do think Brian May tries to capture that same voice and expression in his guitar. It would be awesome if you could look at something like The Millionaires Waltz as well, that is another very under appreciated song great work!

Thanks for the interesting thoughts. Totally agree with everything you said. I have a very wide taste in music but Queen has pretty much remained my favourite band since I was about 10 and never faltered. Their earlier albums are my favourites - but I enjoy their whole catalogue. I've listened to every single song, numerous times by now (some more than others, obviously) but they never get old. Good call on Millionaire's Waltz (it's going round in my head as type this!).

I see you do reactions as well, I don't know if you have seen The White Queen (As It Began) - live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975 or The Great King Rat - Live at the Rainbow 1974 (audio only). These live versions are amazing and they are better then the studio versions I think.

I really liked your discussion of Brian May's guitar work in this song. I love Queen and their music, but am not aware of all the intricacies of Brian's solo work. He never seems to stray from melody, but always adds something special. What seems simple to me, you have broken down to show it's complexity. I subscribed.

Brian used wah-wah also in the song Great King Rat, but for a lot of his solos in the studio he used wah pedal only in specific position for the tone he needed also by using Deacy amp! He also tells about his guitar orchestrations in the documentary (Making A Night At The Opera) He speaks about brass, trombones etc..in his song Good Company! Check it out!

Forgot about the GKR solo, of course it's saturated with wah! 🙄 That's a great documentary BTW, I've seen it a couple of times. Loved the stuff about Seaside Rendezvous and how they mic'ed Freddie's voice coming out of a speaker in a tin can or something for one of the vocal fx. We actually recreated the same technique in the studio with my own band for one of our singles!

I like how you analise Brian`s work. To me, the Queen songs where Brian adds some of his "gimmicks" are often also my favourites. "Good Old Fashioned Loverboy" is one of them, then also the more elabourate " White Queen" down to the more epic orchestral short bit in "All Dead All Dead". Also how you aproach how Brian rather makes hios solo`s add to the song, making it part of the mood or sentiment like in "Flick Of The Wrist" or "Mustapha ". This is maybe what i admire most in Brian, and to me, sets him apart from most other solo guitarists. The way he rather adds to the song as a whole then stick out with a prominent solo. ( Edit ) I would also like to mention one of his solo album songs, where he may be getting as close to metal as possible, "Resurrection" with Cozy Powell. And then there is afcourse his work with Edward Van Halen and Fred Mandell and Phil Chen in "Starfleet ". If ever Brian jammed, it was here on this mini album "Starfleet Project" You may want to look into that, stuff like that is rare =).

I think that Brian says that he uses the Deacy amp and different combinations of his switches to get the sounds of the other instruments from his guitar. I agree that Brian May is an outstanding guitar player, I believe my favorite guitar player, actually. He is unique in his style and tone.

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THIS IS VIRTUOSO So under-appeciated. The way he over-pushes sharp in the 'abrasive' refrain is wild to me. The sixpence tapping the pick-up. (Hedoes use his finger more these days) He also uses a little amp made by John Deacon that really compresses. The Deacy Amp. IsawQueen live many times in the 70' and they were LOUD!! Lol. I love that you really GET IT. Thanks for this 🙏🏽❤

BRILLIANT! Now Brian isn't exactly regarded as a shredder, but I say anyone who hasn't studied his methods will have some difficulty reproducing his work. But us fans know that the guitar playing is just the tip of the iceberg of his contribution to what was Queen. Now the final thing I never hear anymore take into proper consideration regarding his tone is Feedback. Its essential! A day at the races has alot if "strings", ie quartets, by Brian, an that cant be done without frequency shaping and feedback. I love your competence in music. We har perfectly overlapping musical interests. From prog to baroque. So Im glad to follow this channel. And finally your accent is entertaining enough in itself. I want it in my next life.

Cool idea - looking forward to it! My #1 of all time is still J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr in their song Get Me. There are actually three separate solos in it, but the last one in particular is fantastic. It has a really bluesy feel to it, somewhat reminiscent of Slash's famous solo outside the church in the November Rain video.
