Great choice after doing Tool. Gojira deserve a detailed exploration just as much. It's hard to pick what to recommend by them since they have so many good songs. Born for one thing, Grind, Space time, Ocean planet, Flying whales, Global warming, Oroborus, Wolf down the earth, Liquid fire, The gift of guilt, Born in winter, Magma, Lowlands, Pray (live at Red Rocks version), just to name a few.

Too many good choices! Gojira have been steadiy evolving and for me managed to retain their unique edge and distinct sound. If someone is especially into the more minimalistic, moody and experimental sides of Gojira, their performance of Blow me away you(niverse) from the Link Alive is in my opinion a complete and utter masterpiece that sounds unique even for Gojira

Just noticed nobody mentioned the reversed ending. It's a reverse of the melody from the next song on the track, esoteric surgery. The Art of Dying is about letting go of your material life & being content with your life before you die. The into is like the ticking over of life, then the demise happens and you get a sens of clarity on your life, the outro riff is the process of dying and the reverse ethereal melody is the soul leaving, perhaps finding peace elsewhere - so the music style/changes tell a story in of itself

I am so happy you did this! Mario Duplantier is definitely a top drummer for me. Even in his drum solo videos, he tells an entire story with his drumming. No other instruments required. Joe Duplantier has so much tone in his vocals despite the aggression. He lost his voice for quite a while after his mother's death, but he has sounded much better recently. Overall very unique. At points the music gets sort of droney, but it always fits perfectly with the mood of the song. All around fantastic band and a great first choice for a song as well. Would love something from the album From Mars to Sirius as it's my favorite or L'Enfant Sauvage. 🤘

Well said. Joe's vocals are insane for me at so many levels. His voice is so brutal and angry on its own but he has this ability to deliver a soul crushing harmonies on top of all that. I would say it's a huge package of all emotions possible mixed with classic growls/screams. Love how he pulls all these sounds and energy during their live performances. Honestly I'm super thankful to have an opportunity to hear their music, attend to their shows. It's more than a band for me

So....... Just like you, I slept on Gojira for a long time. I heard just a little bit of them here and there in the 2000s, along with a little bit more of them around 5 years ago. I liked what I heard, but was just into other things at the time. I finally decided to binge listen to their discography about a month before Fortitude came out, just to see what all the hubbbub was about. Since then, I probably spent about a thousand bucks on their concerts and their merchandise. It is the most I have spent on a band in my lifetime. I've been listening to metal off and on, but mostly on, for 40 years. I have not been as into a band since my teens, and wonder if having spent that kind of money, along with intending to spend more, by default makes them my of my favorite band of all time. It has probably been 20 to 25 years since I have liked the band enough to take the time to begin reading and memorizing all their lyrics. I really liked that you heard the Sabbath vibe. While I did not catch that, I have caught probably a dozen great bands from the past in their music. Motorhead, Metallica, morbid angel, Meshuggah....... I've even caught a sublime vibe and heard Nick hexum from 311 in his voice, along with even having caught vibes that remind me of video games such as Red Dead redemption and modern warfare in a couple of their songs. I could go on all day about them, but highly recommend you do what I did, which is stop sleeping on them. They have so many great songs and this one consistently fits in my top five. In any specific order, I would say these are the other four that round out the top five for me. You must react to more Gojira In the wilderness From the sky Mouth of Kala Inward movement from the link alive Subbing

Gojira has a great back catalogue, even better tracks to come. Another Drum masterclass but 'all about the cymbals' is Mgla Exercises in Futility V. The most interesting hypnotic band. Just beyond human musicality on a drum kit from his classical percussion background.

Man, i wish i could travel back to 2017 when i discovered this band. You keep finding new favourite songs with these guys, it’s incredible. You definitely have to check out some live stuff. They used to be death metal early 2000’s but became more and more progressive with time, which is fine, but their old stuff is next level. Some recommendations are Remembrance at The Link Alive, some pure old Gojira, or The Axe at Brixton Academy is also a good one to get into. Curious to see which kind of Gojira you will like better of the two as the videos are 10 years apart, and there are many many more epic Gojira tracks, it’s nuts. Cheers man!

“People in trees playing pan pipes” cannot move in Belfast without falling over them........LOL. As always I love the care and attention you pay to the song, and it’s production. They are amazing live, Mario is relentless and the rest of the band are super tight as well. I definitely get Mastodon vibes as well in places, no bad thing as I love Mastodon. Also love the Sabbath reference as Geezer and Bill were so underrated, jamming in the back.

So glad you got round to Gojira, they are something special and their catalogue is varied and deep (they've evolved their sound over the years). Here's my go to list of Gojira tracks for any new listeners and reactors. I might have tweaked the list if I was specifically tailoring for your musical intellect, but all in all this gives your a flavor of every album & picks up on their best work IMO. 3rd album: From mars to sirius - The heaviest matter in the universe (very heavy) - Flying whales (Gojira's signature track) - Where Dragons dwell (youtube: live at hellfest 2013 - a MUST see!!, don't miss out on this reaction) - Global warming (youtube: live studio) 4th album: The way of all flesh - Toxic Garbage Island - The art of dying (legendary track, glad you've ticked it off) - Vacuity - Wolf down the Earth / or / esoteric surgery 5th album: L'enfant sauvage - The gift of guilt (live Brixham academy) - L'enfant sauvage - Born in Winter - Explosia 6th album: Magma - Stranded - Silvera - Pray (live at red rocks only) - The cell / or / shooting star (live at bbc) 7th album: Fortitude - Born for one thing - Amazonia - Sphinx - Another World /or/ New Found 2nd album: The link - Embrace the world - Indians - Rememberance (live at Link Alive) 1st album: Terra incognita - Space time - Lizard skin / or /clone - Love (from 'link alive' ideally) / or / Blow Me Away (You)niverse

What I like about your videos is that 1, you seriously immerse yourself in the music. 2, you expose me to new bands I've unfortunately never heard of with your "this reminds me of such and such feel" and 3, you bring my attention to sounds or relationships that I hadn't put together myself. Joe Duplantier (their vocalist) is a vocal monster, because among many things, the fact that the scream technique he uses is basically taking a note and screaming it REALLY hard is just... I don't know how he's done it for so long. The melody combined with sheer aggression makes for a wall of emotion. He has had to dial it back a bit in recent years, but he's still a beast. As for the drummer, that's his brother Mario. They're an insanely talented duo. Mario's drumming is unlike anything else I've heard (as far as how much emotion and feel he puts into it goes). The combination of their talents, plus the talents of the other members? There's really no word for it other than "impressive". Welcome to the world of Gojira!

Funny you mentioned Mastodon. I think they did a tour with them and Gojira opened for them (they weren't as big as they are now, they were just becoming big at that time, I think it was around 2016). Here's a kind of funny story: I saw them live at a concert they did in Tijuana, Mexico. Somehow the venue screwed up and there was basically no marketing so the place didn't sell even half the tickets, more like a third for how empty the venue was. We were in line because the venue had an electronic music stage and you needed to be in line to enter where Suicidal Tendencies, Gojira and Mastodon were going to play so once they opened the doors everyone got in. Suicidal Tendencies played and it was ok, not many people left. But then Gojira played. It was a pretty bizarre concert. Everyone was so chill and I was thinking "hmm maybe they don't even know who Gojira is" but then when Gojira called out to the crowd almost everyone went crazy. It was like everyone just wanted to enjoy the concert and watch the guys play, didn't care much for slam or headbanging or anything. I got confirmation when Gojira finished their setlist and almost half of the people left, I stayed for Mastodon for one song, and me and my gf just looked at each other like "are we seriously gonna stay after that amazing show to watch these guys?" (we were there for Gojira). Don't get me wrong, Mastodon is ok, not a fan of them but Gojira was, and is, on another level in my opinion

I don't know why, but watching you react feels like chatting with those of my childhood friends who played in bands and were really (and are) into music! Such a bunch of versatilely talented dudes, as we say in my country, "music has ruined a plenty of promising athletes" (it's a joke people, calm down..)!

If you fancy something a bit different from Gojira, check out A Sight To Behold. The arpeggiation in that is incredible. It’s like a mix of metal and Vivaldi.

Maybe some of their older work? Remembrance is a good one, vacuity is another good one. There is also a good dual song containing the songs “From mars” and “To Sirius” that paints a beautiful story

Fun Facts: - Joe Duplantier is one of the few Metal vocalists who can scream in pitch. I'm no expert on the matter, so I can't explain how it's done, but I like what I hear and that's good enough for me. : ) - Their heavy sound make many people think they tune very low but in fact the lowest tuning they use is D (someone correct me if I'm wrong). - You should also know that Mario Duplantier took 7 years of Jazz drumming lessons to become a better Metal drummer. One part of his practicing routine involves 1 hour of kick drums only, where he starts from a slow bpm and speeds up progressively until he reaches the maximum speed possible.

@@zachrabbit5463 - You're right, this song is in open C minor and it's probably the only open tuning song in their entire discography, the rest of the C tuning they use is drop C, in songs like Adoration For None, All The Tears, Born in Winter, L'Enfant Sauvage, Mouth of Kala, Planned Obsolescence, Shooting Star, The Way of All Flesh, Toxic Garbage Island or Vacuity. There, I just corrected my initial comment but still, the bulk of their work is either in D or drop D.

First Tool, then Gojira. If somehow you find the time to check out Orbit Culture this month then Christmas will indeed come early for me. Either way, I'm all for checking out Gojira's new album this year, it was easily one of my favorite albums to come out. These guys are legends, you are in for a killer ride.

This song sounds exactly the same live as it does on the record, down to the growl-sung vocals. In fact I’d say they’re one of the few big bands (these guys are massive, they’ve played Red Rocks, the Rose Bowl, and Madison Square Garden) that sound better live than they do on the record

Tool, Jinjer, and Gojira are my current favorite bands. All three have the best drummers in my opinion. "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe" and "Into the Storm" are pretty good Gojira tunes. You can't go wrong with Gojira. Just pick any of their tunes. (Gojira are environmental activists, another reason to support this band.)
