I was lucky to see them both live. Roys 4 concerts were a long time ago, Marcus's concerts were 6 and 5 years ago. In my opinion they are both geniuses on their instruments. Very different styles, there is no way to compare those two.

Great video, thanks! Roy Haynes is the most important living jazz musician on ANY instrument. No one can approach his resume. When I was a kid, I was a rocker, but there were no rock magazines, I used to look at Downbeat at the library, and even though I didn't play jazz, my first drum set was a Ludwig Jazzette because Roy was so damn cool! One more story: I saw Roy at Yoshi's and he was playing a backline kit with his own cymbals. He wasn't feeling that happy with the drums (even though he sounded great) He was talking to the audience and hit the drums a few times and said "That's not Haynes" Then he played the flat ride and said "That is Haynes!" He also remembered coming down to Jack London Square on the trolly with Billy Holiday!

Quincy, I'm such an idiot, right at the beginning when you were talking about Marcus and said: "....who is fifty, no sixty..." and I thought: "years old? Daaaaaaimn, not only is he the baddest cat out there, but he also looks amazing. LOL. I love your lessons; I learn so much from you. I love Marcus's "ruffs" and I think I just heard Roy do one or two there that now make sense....like grandfather, like grandson.

I got to meet Roy Haynes at his gig. It was his 80th bday. I did not expect him to be so explosive at 80, holy crap I was blown away!

Man, love the teacher in you!

Roy Haynes, along with Max Roach was one of the original funky drummers of the early modern jazz era

What a great idea this video is. Roy Haynes is my favorite drummer and Marcus carries the legacy of his grandfather. Thanks so much for this Quincy.

Marcus has Roy’s approach and feel, but remains true to himself - a wonderful player… I was fortunate to see Roy in 1966 in London when he toured Europe with the Stan Getz Quartet (Gary Burton and Steve Swallow). Very Moving great again Maestro Quincy . What the Great Roy & Marcus does is the beautiful textual things . I’ve seen Marcus in other clips doing lots of rim clicks etc . So great . The greats did it & Roy did it & did it & did it .. ❤️ btw just listened to Max soloing but also play time ride variations in his 4s etc . Heard that here 🆒 🙏.

I think the “lineage” in question from Roy to Marcus, besides the sonic choices, is the way in which rhythmic subdivisions are approached from the perspective of a continuum. Roy is more implicit and will imply certain meters but usually only when soloing, and sometimes when playing time, whereas Marcus seeks to be continually shifting meters. In that way, Marcus is more “explicit” in how he maps this continuum.

I noticed that you've been putting up the form of these tunes in your more recent videos (I dunno how recent, I've been operating on little sleep #parentlife). Anyway, putting up the form gives everything context--I wish everyone did that, regardless of instrument or pedagogy taught. The form markers make us aware of how figures setup a bridge, go back to the top, or even mark a 4-bar-phrase. The way the ride or bass drum is played also carves out the form, just like the way a pianist comps out chords and the bassist weaves a line help to mark the form. As a "non-drummer", just wanted to remark on how important showing the form is to everything you are covering with these drummers. Btw, I never knew that Marcus Gilmore and Roy Haynes were related :)

the Haynes, Chick, Vituos trio was amazing.

I would love to hear a video about what it is like teaching at a university, and even updates on how semesters wrap up/begin, etc, if that isn't a conflict of interests. I think it is a very interesting path for many people choosing the creative path.

Hi Q -- You are the best drum educator posting on KZread, imho. By the way, I think the album you called Matrix is "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" with Roy and Miroslav. Matrix is a track on that album. Talent certainly runs deep in their family. Both amazing musicians. Unfortunately have never seen Roy live but have seen Marcus a couple of times with Vijay Iyer. Check out the video of Marcus playing on Vijay Iyer's Machine Days at the Bridgestone Music Festival.

7 stroke roll, ending with a cross stick

I’m not sure if there is a video of this, and I know you already covered Brian Blade, but you should do spain from the trilogy album with Chick Corea and Christian Mccbride. That song gives me goose bumps everytime and he is so musical in the way he plays.

I think that stick trick is a fast ass single stroke triplet but it sounds almost like a 7 stroke roll. At least that's my take on it. Love to you Quincy.

I like to think of Humpty Dumpty as 6 + 4 + 8. The reason being, the 4 measure phrase is all on Bb-7 (and it's preceded by BbMA7 so you have that major to minor tension). If you listen to any of Chick's groups that play this tune, that's four measures where a soloist can go a bit "out" and when you get to the start of the 8 bar phrase (on D-7) it's a release of that tension. Such a brilliant tune but that form can be so deceiving and that's why I break it down the way I do. This is definitely a tune that drummers should understand the harmonic structure. There's a lot packed into a short form in this tune. One thing that helps greatly is that the last bar is just a classic ii - V (F-7 - Bb7#5) that leads back to the I (EbMA7) at the top of the form. Learn the theory, at least be functionally literate with it. It helps with being on the same page with the rest of the band when you understand where all the tension and release points are. This was a really good one Q. Show us that stick shot lick when you finally figure it out!!!

I still just think and hear of the tune in two halves. The Bb minor sounds more like the end of the first section opposed to a section of its on. Either way, important for everyone to hear the form and the harmonic tension and release. Thanks for sharing👍🏾

Thanks for your many fascinating and informative videos Quincy, which I find very useful and helpful. With respect though there's one thing that really detracts from them for me. I love your enthusiasm and passion, but those high-pitched 'woos' are really intrusive and grating. Would it be possible to be just as enthusiastic without them?
