This is a story about the Haynes family, about royalty... but particularly it's the story about the cymbal Roy gave me back in about 1968 when I was working with the Stan Getz quartet.

This is the first time I've heard Chick speak, it's so cool he still has that Chelsea accent. I'm from the Boston suburbs, so I get a kick out of hearing legends and heros like Chick and Roy kept their Boston twang. He's even got a Chelsea t-shirt on. Lovely story about one of the most important drummers in history. Roy kept that power and finesse right into old age, his stuff on Metheny's Questions and Answers is legendary.

Wow Chick! Thank you for sharing that story about Roy Haynes and the cymbal that was on so many albums, including the awe-inspiring Now He Sings, Now He Sobs album you did way back in the day. Please tell more stories, share philosophies! This was as great as hearing you play. You must be like Henny Youngman: “I’ve got a million of “em”. This is a fun article. Many drummers and others were treated to wonderful information about that particular era of jazz that was just on fire with talent and ideas and lots of change. I have a Paiste 602 20 inch flat ride I bought used from Jacks Drum Shop in Boston in 1974. . The second Chick played it, I knew it was the same cymbal as mine. The sound was undeniably the same. I still use it all the time. It sounds great with nylon tips.

I believe I can remember that cymbal, the 1968 version, from the Album - Return to Forever, ECM. I hear it (and it’s clearly the 1968 version, of the 3 mentioned) played by Airto, in the last section of side 2, La Fiesta. Also the cymbal roll, soon into Track 1 is clearly that cymbal.

I had a similar late 1960's A. Zildjian Flat Ride - 18" - sounded very much like your Paiste... I eventually switched over to mostly K Zildjians, and ended up finding an 18" K Custom Flat Ride - out of the Zildjian Vault!! Very Tony Williams type dry stick darker sound (more similar sound to the Marcus Cymbal) ... It's now my fave cymbal for jazz/latin etc... Great Story / Roy's Legacy will Always carry on! ~~ Thanks Chick!! (I know this - but many perhaps do not - that you are actually quite a good drummer - as well as the best keyboardist on the planet!)....

I have an older 22" Zildjian K flat ride cymbal very similar to that one that Roy Haynes signed..have no idea of what particular model it is no markings at all on it other than the Zildjian K imprint pressed into the metal. It is a monster weighs a ton. Has very clean clear crystalline stick definition perfect for faster cymbal patterns through quieter passages..doesn't build up a 'wash' that overpowers the other instruments. Didn't know you're a drummer too Chick. Lot of history there in those cymbals.

Hi. Very much enjoyed hearing about the cymbal. Do you know the story behind the relationship of Roy and the Ludwig Jazzette kit? Rumor has it that, back in the day, Bud Slingerland and Bill Ludwig both were trying to get Roy to endorse their respective brands and Roy needed a small kit that would fit into the sports car he was driving at the time...I think it was a Fiat Spider...and Slingerland came up with the "Jet" kit and Ludwig came up with the "Jazzette". The Jazzette was what he ended playing and endorsing. I'd sure love to get the story from the horse's mouth! Stay safe!

Roy Haynes played a lot on this Zildjian flat-top ride. No cup. That gives it this peculiar sound tight and crystalline. Inconvenience, it's not crashable. Very interesting ride for the clubs where you can't play loud, or for studio work. Flat rides are part of the Pat Metheny sound, but I think Paul Wertico played on Paiste cymbals.

Well Chick, I love your playing and writing. (always have) Roy's drumming has always been a big deal to me. If Sabian are going to produce that ride and call it the 'Chick Corea' series, then Yamaha should come out with a Fender Rhodes copy that sounds just like yours did in the '60s and call it the 'Roy Hanes' signature model. Or maybe that would be too much?

I think the cymbal being named for Chick is because of how he's brought that cymbal through his whole career since he got it from Roy. Roy himself didn't necessarily use that cymbal so exclusively.

Hi Chick, just want to say thank you for all those records you made (and will make) or I'd have nothing to listen too. Listening now to "Steps - What Was" I was surprised by the similarity the Roy Haynes drum solo and that of the playing of drummer Richard Wilson. I'm referring to a record recorded in 1970 www.discogs.com/Forrest-Westbrook-Jim-West-18-Paul-Ruhland-Dick-Wilson-This-Is-Their-Time-Oh-Yes/release/5441490 Richard was a great teacher to group of us LA drummers round the 80's & 90's. As a drummer yourself, I think you would enjoy Richard's playing, maybe there is some way I can get you the recording I have of this record? Many thanks again.
