I love Dave, absolutely my favorite drummer of mine, and I'm so proud to call him a friend.

I love the second and third flat ride of yours, they both have such a nice stick sound + the wash sits below the stick in the mix, great crash as well. Your flat rides are much more versatile than the ones commonly available. I think Paiste has some nice flat rides, but they aren't as flexible and don't have the depth of character you flats have. PS Here on KZread Chick Corea has a video that's called "The Cymbal Roy Haynes Gave Me". He shares the history of the use of this flat ride in recordings from the past, (the one Roy used was a Paiste flat ride), but Chick also has two other flat rides that he was given and plays them a bit to share their sound & history.

I have a paper thin flat and I love it, particularly because it gets a great crash sound. Cymbals that don't crash are so limiting, especially since the cymbal is missing a bell, already. My previous flat didn't crash well and it just never felt right.

Can't get enough of those thin rides. I have an OOOOOLLLLLD 18" Kingston Pro Line that is paper thin and I put a dent in it this past week after playing it for years. Sadness

I'm currently playing 2 flat rides. And though years ago I used a heavier A. Zildjian flat ride, I've learned to move to thins as they provide that explosive cash you can interject within the time. I'm currently playing a Paiste 20 thin Flat 602 and a 20 Paiste Sound Formula. Though at 2162 grams in the Sound Formula, it's okay but not great for those crashes. But I will say, that ride has amazing stick definition and even mic'd up in a louder situation can kill from the stage. Don't let purists fool you, there are some amazing flat rides for all styles of music.

Legend has it that many Zil large hammered K done in the early 2000 hundreds has its own uniqueness that is worthy to be replicated at some point especially an artist instrument.

You absolutely nailed the sound. I have an old 20" K flat ride (not light) that I bought over 20 years ago, chasing after that Roy Haynes sound. It's just too heavy and lifeless and has gotten more lifeless over time. This is the sound I'm craving. Using a flat ride as your main ride changes the way I play, in a good way, and I miss that sound.

I think you've got the flat ride sound locked in! I have a Labyrinth 2145g 22" and love it. Great stick definition and it's got that classic subtle flat ride wash. I really like how it sounds using the shoulder of the stick on the ride surface as well.

I had a Sabian HH 18 that was thin and kind of crashable in the late ’80s but it was stolen together with som other goodies in a cymbal bag behind my back as I was checking in at a hotel. Tried a great Avedis 18 that also was great after that but decided to wait so I missed it.

Great work, Timothy. I recently purchased a Meinl 20" jazz club flat ride (which comes with 4 rivets) to add to my collection, which I really like, but it's not that crashable, unlike the ones you just featured. Interesting video, thank you. By the way, nice sounding snare. Cheers.

I just did a blind order of a 20” K Light Flat and it had a very pronounced low mid range “bark/hum” whenever I hit it 1/3-1/2 the way in. It was like nails on a chalkboard it stuck out so much. I played it for 2 minutes and packed it right back up. Everything else about it was cool though so I’m on the lookout for a nice flat ride. I just hope the overly peaked resonance isn’t a normal thing for flat rides as it’s hard to really be able to tell on KZread demos. I’m curious about yours.

That's certainly an issue with the balance of tension in the cymbal. Dave's cymbal in this video is very balanced so you don't have any hums/barking nonsense. It's all in how the cymbal is made/hammered.

Very nice sir. I myself am a fan of Flat Rides. I have 7 or 8 in my collection, mostly EAK, but there are a few 20” 3 dot or thin stamp A’s in there as well…Will you have these at PASIC or are they already spoken for..?

The resting levels off fairly quickly and the aging process starts. Over the course of years the metal hardens and the stick definition gets more present.

Hey Timothy. Love your videos! Why do bells on cymbals encourage more overtones? My best guess is that with out a bell, the cymbal has less resistance, so when the stick hits the cymbal, the vibration is able to travel through the cymbal quickly. Where as the bell will create resistance to slower frequencies, redirecting and splitting them into higher frequencies that travel in a more complex pattern around the cymbal. What are your thoughts?

I think your assessment is right on. The bell, in short, provides sustain and volume to a cymbal. Any kind of redirection in the natural flow of the vibration (whether with a bell, a hammering pattern, or even the type of lathing) will create a certain sonic character that's unique to that style cymbal. The amount of "resistance" that you're referring to usually amounts to a cymbal's propensity to either be bright, sustaining, and open OR dark, growly, and dry by nature.

Hey Timothy, genuinely curious question here: if you just played a cymbal like you normally would throughout the resting period, would the sound still evolve like it would during a resting period where the cymbal is unplayed? Or do you think it would speed up or slow down the resting period or affect the resting period in a positive or negative way?

Yeah, it would for sure. Theoretically, it could even (VERY) mildly accelerate the resting process. There'd be no way to test that and most people couldn't really tell even if there was a way to test it.

I'm a drummer, and I usually hate to hear calisthenic-drum solos . . . I turn them off. I LOVE YOUR STYLE OF PLAYING ! Very musical. Not sure about using a flat ride because I still have in mind Morello's 20'' A ride on Take 5. Your flat rides DO crash well, and don't have ugly overtone humm. Do you make the drums that are behind you? Interesting. I'll check out your web site. Thanks man.

Man that is insanely close! Good job! Honestly (and I hate to say) but There was a certain complexity to the way Dave Kings ride sounds that yours didn't quite hit. They had the same "color." But different textures. It's hard to articulate. Who know's what the variable is. And don't get me wrong, I love the way your cymbals sound in general! And I'm not much of a Zildjian fan either. But I think the old dogs at Zildjian take this one lol. Great watch though and awesome job overall!

I'm surprised at how light that Zildjian is! What I like about the original compared to yours is that the stick is still very crisp. It has a high end in both the ride and the crash that is missing from yours. I have a 20" K Custom Flat Top Ride that's around 2200g, so while it's a lot heavier that King's cymbal, I don't feel like it's too heavy at all. The crash isn't quite there like on your cymbals, but it's not clangy either. I don't know the history behind the K Custom Flat Top Ride, but I'd guess it's trying to copy the 602 Medium it's a little dryer than the 602. King's cymbal is much more unique. Maybe Bosphorus did the concept first, but it's very interesting to get it from a mainstream maker.

Hi, Tim. First of all, I love your alchemy. Is it possible to hammer the bell flat? I have a A Zildjian crash 20" 1996g. Worth a try? Seems like the profile would be a good start for a flat ride. Thanks.

Thanks! Unfortunately, you can hammer a bell flat. You can only enlarge, expand, and thin when it comes to modifying cymbals.

I always thought that one should never crash on a flat ride!!?? it kills the sound of that cymbaal.

Not if the flat ride is made in a certain way! A flat that crashes is a really special thing.
