As he was being prepped for his final surgery, he was asked by a nurse if there was anything he couldn't take. His response was "Yeah, country music."

The host should have asked him what he thought of Charlie Rich.

I agree with you, Larry. I am a fan of artists from *many* musical genres, from jazz, to classical music, to country music, hard rock and metal, and much more. Buddy Rich is an amazing drummer, but what he missed, in his musical snobbery, is that a short country song by Hank Williams, Sr. can, in its lyrical poetry and musical simplicity, take as much skill, and be as beautiful, as a long jazz instrumental by Miles Davis.

You are right Larry. Jazz guys were just frustrated by the seemingly unfair distribution of fame and money to jazz guys versus the country guys, coz jazz is not really accessible to all people.

Awfully nice of Buddy to interrupt Barbara Feldon when she was making a point. As good as he was as a drummer, that was how much of a jerk he was personally. And Charlie Christian, whom Rich mentions, would've at the very least appreciated Chet Atkins' musicianship. Which was extraordinary.

Hi Larry I have seen this video before and its kind of rare for a musician to cut down other people's music they don't usually do that probably because it makes them look like jerks. I think they style his kind of hair then he puts it on his head after.

I could only imagine what he would think of today's version of country music.

I had heard that, at times at least, he had a bit of an abrasive personality (but please correct me if I'm wrong!). Note that I typed that before watching the video.

John Bonham watching Buddy Rich drum must have been overwhelmed. Buddy is a well documented jerk & generally was an unpleasant person. Barbara Feldman was looking sharp 👌.

If I recall right, I think both Ginger Baker and Neil Peart were both a Buddy Rich fan. And as far as the trolls who are pestering you, if they don’t like your channel, go someplace else, I love your channel you have a very nice selection of genres. And by the way Buddy wearing a wig or toupee. 😊

And yes, I think Buddy Rich is a great drummer but a complete jerk.

The man has an opinion, lol. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I've never really listened to his music, so I guess it doesn't phase me.

I've seen that before. Buddy Rich was an arrogant jerk. While there is truth in the lack of sophistication in country music of that time, that doesn't mean it has no value. More complicated doesn't necessarily mean better. I'm with Goober. I'll take Glenn Campbell over Buddy Rich any day.

@@samstone22744 you are completely right. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and some of those bluegrass pickers do stuff I can't do. The form may be simple, but there is a lot of technique involved.

He's a great drummer for sure Larry but he should have kept his mouth shut,as I've said before music is like food, you like what you like and I don't like Buddy Rich. Bob

Buddy Rich behind the drums is awesome, and some of his snobbery may have come from him being a trained drummer, whereas rock music and other genres had that amateur/self-trained image. I personally couldn't care less for country music, but still the way he looks down on genres here is...not to his benefit to put it mildly. However, Rich makes a point here about jazz music (which is mostly rooted in black music) and musicians that weren't given due respect in comparison to the often conservative white image of (comparatively simplistic and one-dimensional) country music.

Buddy wasn't a trained drummer. He was self-trained. He learned by ear. Just like Keith Moon. I don't think he liked Keith either. he hated Bonham. He should have loved some country artists. Buddy was the worst kind of snob. he is the best drummer ever. But he was also an idiot.
