I changed the drive belt on my mower twice, so I took a video of the second time... when i did it correctly.

    Hi John, I have the same mower & I found it easier to replace the drive belt by removing all fluids, (oil & fuel) then turn the mower onto its right side. Place a 100mm timber block under the side of the mowers top frame & front steering housing to hold the mower level. That way you can access the bottom of the mower very easy. I give the bottom of the mower a good clean with a Geanie, that makes it a lot easier to see all the bolts that you need to remove also the removal of the diff housing & very easy access. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.

    ... it is an A 29" Belt which is easily obtainable and doesn`t have to come from your Murray agent... to replace the spring was only doable by attaching a wire, twisting the ends to make it an approx. 5 " length, turned into an 8 shape, hooking the spring on one end then pulling it through the hole with a crow-bar stuck through the other end and levering against the side of the frame of the body, making sure the wire was strong enouhgh gauge... I hung my mower up on an engine hoist, securing it with old lenght of seat-belts... many thanks to you John for showing how to do it, it saved me a lot, and I mean a lot of time...

    I tried changing the belts with the mower on the ground just like in the video. It wasn't working. I then drained the gas and, backed up the mower to a large tree, and stood it on it's rear bumper. I tied the upper portion of the mower to the tree. That gave me access to everything and finished the job in under an hour.

    I just went thru the process of installing a drive belt on my Murray rear engine rider. Your video got me started in the right direction, but ultimately I ended removing the entire transmission. the entire undercarriage was packed with grass and oil. The 12hp B&S motor on this style rider apparently was designed whit a filler tube that used a rubber grommet to seal the connection to the motor. The vibration and poor seal allowed oil to seep out around oil fill tube and leak down under the chassis. I had to power wash both the upper and lower chassis. Even with a through power wash the under chassis and transmission were coated with oil and grass. The main thing is to clean as much of the surface under neath to prevent oil and grease from getting on the belt. Removing the bolt from the left side of the mower belt guard gave me enough room to thread the belt around the bottom large pulley and clear the belt guards. I had to reinstall the transmission to almost inside the chassis before the belt would wrap around the drive pulley. The key is the correct position of the belt on the belt tension pulley and making sure that the belt inside all of the guides. If the belt isn't free to run loose when in neutral, the transmission will not work correctly and the belt will shred itself. My rider also required a adjustment of the clutch belt (pedal) travel because the tension pulley would not pull out far enough to release the drive belt completely. Again chewing up the drive belt if not corrected. Overall the design was very poorly thought out. A additional three inches to the back of the frame would have made belt replacement much easier.

I also noticed the transaxle pullay had a little slop could that be the problem it moves now, but you cant shift after you go into a gear and cant brake.

    Make sure the belt is fully disegaging. Did this start after the belt was replaced? Sounds like the belt might be a little to small, or the belt run might not be quite right. If the axle is wearing, I would save for a different mower, these are not worth that trouble in my opinion.

  • @Mr_Tecumseh

    @Mr_Tecumseh

    @@jvh802 Well we worked on it some more yesterday and got it to where the shifter is now just sticking some. At first it would not shift at all, the shift arm did not want to budge. After messing around with it for an hour and adjusting the brake rod, clutch rod and that back brake hex bolt on the back of the trans, it started working better, but its still not perfect, it wont shift easy it sticks. I think it has to do with that back bolt that you have to hold with an open end and tigten down at the same time with a half inch, once I started messing with that it was getting better. Once we got it working descent we gave up, we said good enough. We just replaced that belt, got the machine for free, the belt it had was burnt out. Weare getting ready to flip it to sell. I just wish it shifted easier its real tight now and you have to sometimes let it roll a little farther to shift or to shift forward it has to be somewhat moving. We have it close now, its a lot better than it was when we first got the new belt on. Its a nice little RER.

    @@jvh802 I changed it again today, the kelval belt I put on in the beginning of summer had 3 cracks, only holding by the kevlar threads so I bought a cheap $2 belt on amazon, only took 30 mins to change, just drop the mower deck (3pins) and lock the clutch peddle down (parking break), that will take the pressure off the tension pulley, then tip the mower on its side, there is a bracket that goes around the pulleys on the motor shaft, take the 2 bolts out that hold that on, bracket doesn't come out but you can now slide the belt around it, and thats it, you just switch the belts, its not easy because you have to go slow and its kind of like a puzzle but you can weave the belt around everything and get it on, it also will go over the transmission pulley, there isn't much room but its just enough to get the belt over it, with all that said if you do it the right way it should only take 5 min or less to weave the belt around everything. hope this helps someone.

    Jon... Seriously Dude? The FACT that he took the time to share this in the first place, should be appreciated. At least critique him in a polite way.

    It is by far the hardest part of the job. I have a small hook set that I was able to send through the hole, hook the spring loop and then grab the handle with a pliers and pull the spring through.
