As a fan from the southern united states, who grew up fishing and thought until age 30 that football was a game where guys smash into each other and score touchdowns, I can promise you that no one has ever wanted to watch another man fish. That is nasty work by Fox

If the state spends money on a national TV network (which they do here in Romania too, I think they still have the Olympics and they had the WCs but the Euros are on a generalist TV station that literally everyone has at that, spread between their main channel and their sports/films channel) they should at least show all the games, that s absolutely fucking ridiculous

4:40 Serie A is actually very accessible now. If you have the champions league in the US then you have Serie A, they’re both on paramount. Serie A just doesn’t get promoted nearly as much (despite having literally the best American player)

Soccer isn't boring, and neither is fishing. Crushing a few beers with your mates while hunting for your food for the day kicks ass.

To be fair, in germany which hosts the euros, a paid service bought the rights to some of the games, so lots of people can't watch them here either, not for free. But what makes it insane is that this paid service somehow "outbid" the literal state owned tv channel which is subsidized by a forced tax of 18€ paid every month by every german citizen. So if one in 3 germans is a taxpayer that would be a budget of roughly 600 million € per month. How do you outbid that?

I heard from the Brazilian that they also didn't broadcast some of them. In my country (Poland) i believe i can watch copa America if i want to stay awake every night and it is weird for me that you don't broadcast something you have rights to.

In Bulgaria 2008 they decided to broadcast the EURO on a paid television, that was missing from the channel list of many local TV providers, including mine. Aside from the fact that paying to watch sports was a non-existant concept in Bulgaria back then, and the people (and rightfully so) were outraged. I watched the whole tournament on my computer, on websites that smell like viruses.

Greetings from Germany. TV rights are shared between four broadcasters here (ARD, ZDF, RTL, Magenta). There are about half a dozen matches that none of them bothers to show. And we are the host of the tournament, dammit.

The fact that they only do 5 minute highlights is a travesty too. The Spanish TUDN channel does actual 15 minute highlights in comparison...

This is why i love the old days of cable having all sports at my fingertips including the Scottish premier 😂

Now I totally agree with nearly everything you said, but I can't stand this Wheeler Lake slander. Its a great lake, just outside of my hometown in Alabama. Definitely top teer. But yes ridiculous that fishing was on.

Copa America is primarily a South American competition, but CONMEBOL has a history of having guests from other continents (I'm sorry Spain didn't go to the 2011 edition where they were invited, they had a chance to do something unique in history: be the reigning champions of the world, Europe AND South America at the same time) or doing collaborations with CONCACAF (North America). This is actually the 2nd time the US is host after 2016 and this edition is a collaboration with CONCACAF. The US is involved, it's in group C with Uruguay, Bolivia and Panama. The opening game in football competitions has always been traditionally played either by the title holders (which is the case here: Argentina as the reigning champion, this is usually the case in competitions where the title holders qualify directly for the next edition) OR by the host nation (which is always automatically qualified, which is what you could see at the Euros with the opening match: Germany, the host country of Euro 24 vs Scotland).

Another interesting thing Fox isn’t capitalizing on by not showing these matches is that people of a certain decent who don’t know anything about soccer get into it supporting their countries I’m Italian and live in NJ and every sports bar near me is showing Italy games due to the large italian population as an Italian hardcore soccer fan watching these games at bars I see the passion and just how people care do they know who Nicolo Borella is, no but as someone who does myself and people who don’t know anything have the same passion as the hardcore fans do fuck Fox Sports and fuck locking the Bundesliga, La Liga, and Most of the prem behind a paywall

The stupidity is probably someone thinking "nobody knows who these guys are and we bought this to show Mbappe and Bellingham and Ronaldo and Haaland and Messi". But that's not an US exclusive thing, here on the Wheeler Lake of europe they've been broadcasting the late game on the free generalist TV channels, but not today because Switzerland - Scotland. Yeah, could have bid for the Germany game, but they'd lose all the pill and worthless insurance money from afternoon talk shows.

Worse still, Haaland isn’t at the euros because Scotland beat Norway in qualifying!!! If haaland was worth watching to these broadcasters then surely the team that wins against him is too?

The fact that it's 'only' 5 matches makes it even more baffling. If it was like, 15 or 20 matches they weren't showing, you could say OK, maybe they're just picking and choosing the ones they think will get the highest viewing figures or something, but excluding just 5, it's like, what even is the point? Why not just show them?!

Worst part is the games they are not showing are the early matches, like 9am EST. It's not like it's going against prime time NFL games, lol

What sucks is FOX, for the most part, has done right by these Euros, especially with the quality of match commentators (not sure about Landon Donovan, though). But then, there's the bullshit of sticking matches on FUBO, oh, and also, still forcing Alexi Lalas and Stu Holden on us in studio. Just leave them on Copa America, please and thank you.

Bangladesh 🇧🇩 is broadcasting all of Euros matches on the T Sports channel. A Cricket 🏏 crazy Asian country watching all of European football ⚽. They are also broadcasting all of COPA America 2024. 😅 I grew up in the country thinking when a broadcaster earned airing rights of a sporting event, they air all matches and not selective.

Something similar happened in Germany. Most of the matches are broadcasted on ZDF / ARD, which are actually paid for by a tax and therefore those matches were free. Some of the matches were not shown there but could only be accessed through another paid membership. So you’d have to buy a whole other membership just to watch those like 2 matches there.

interesting point, most countries in Europe require most Major Events (including sports) to be shown on free to air TV.

Also, here is the list of games in the agreement: " Through its deal with FOX Sports, fuboTV will be the exclusive home to a package of selected UEFA National Team Football matches through 2028. fuboTV will have exclusive rights to stream select matches featuring the top European national teams, including Italy, France, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. So with the exception of the Hungary-Switzerland match, all the other matches not on FOX are Ukraine or Georgia matches. I won't go ENTIRELY tinfoil hat but.... I'll at least have a tinfoil brim: It's very interesting how the only teams with multiple matches not being shows are the only two former Soviet republics. I know it's probably just coincidence but still.... makes me wonder....

Playing Devils Advocat here, but might have to do with the rights they bought and EU Law. As far as I know in no country in Europe there is a singular rights holder to every game. So I would argue that FOX bought the biggest package they could(were allowed to) and then cut the five games with the smallest audience on their market.

It is a good sign if they cut games because that means the demand is high, they try to capitalize on euro by selling subscribtions to watch the euro.

As a Scotland fan if I couldn’t watch the Hungary Switzerland game to see what we needed to win, I’d be fuming.

I found it really weird at first but then realized that Fox is owned by News Corp, which also owns Sky who bought rights to the Euros. So for News Corp, the Euros in the U.S is more of something to fill airtime, which is why they were willing to replace the Euros with Fishing.

TV channels everywhere, love to pull that kind of shit. Here (Bulgaria) we get all kinds of trickery esp with motorsports as they will often be shafted off the schedule and shown on TV taped in late nights or live on streaming. I mean Eurosport has golf showing late nights or cycling all day, while removing speedway/SBK/most of WEC. Who tf watches golf over here, we barely have a couple functioning golf courses that only foreign tourists play at.
