"absence" really is another of byul's emo bops... so glad you got one of her vocalist songs in, too. i forget if any of us actually mentioned it before but moonbyul was actually originally trained to be a vocalist and even was the main vocalist and leader of an extremely short-lived group (with wheein, even) before that fell through and she (and wheein) wound up training to become mamamoo members. but because she was teamed up with three amazingly high tier vocalists, their agency told her she'd have to debut as a rapper and that, paired with trying to measure herself against the other three, really made her lose confidence in her vocal abilities, despite her being an extremely good vocalist. for years the other three would constantly try to get her to sing in their songs with them, they're forever encouraging her (also, two of them helped teach her how to rap. how crazy is that? she's thanked both solar and hwasa for that at various times). and she actually loved singing in her own time even back then, so many random snippets of her singing in various behind the scenes footage, plus her releasing covers or a handful of self-written songs over the years. "paint me" was the big reveal, though, showing the world that vocalist byul is here to take over the world alongside the other three vocalists in mamamoo. and she's only gotten more prolific since then... their last concerts, half of moonbyul's 20 minute solo stage was devoted to singing (as an aside, all four members of mamamoo can, and do, do all roles. that's one huge thing with them, they're all so versatile it's not even funny) it's also really funny that "absence" was based on characters from a drama yet she managed to evoke so much emotion in the song and if you're interested, other songs by her with a similar emo feel include "in my room" (has a mv) and "mirror". both of them are older songs she wrote years ago, along with "moon movie". and two of those finally got official releases in her 'dark side of the moon' solo album earlier this year (the one "eclipse" is from)

Oof, our angsty queen Moonbyul😅, she has another song like Absence called Mirror (shes wrote both of these) and looking at the lyrics you cant help but ask "who hurt you??" And apparently she thought up the Absence lyrics when watching a TV drama🙃. Lastly, image only having Selfish as an idea of what her music might be like, only to have Eclipse dropped on your head... and that's exactly what happened to moomoos, lol! It literally came out of nowhere, and though we knew she might try something like it, we didnt think she'd go for it so soon😭

Selfish, Seulgi of Red Velvet is one of her closest friend since... 2015 I think or earlier. Absence, the lyrics are based on the Kdrama she watched, The World of Married. About a cheater getting back to the wife, but the trust is destroyed, the cheater does it again, and this time the wife left him. ahaha Eclipse, Moonbyul was surprised that it exceeds her expectation, it's the concept that she wanted to try for a long time. :D It shows how TVXQ really influenced her. The choreographer of Absence and Eclipse also does EXO and other boy group dances. You should watch the all girl dance of Eclipse. ehehe

oh man, mamamoo members are just as powerful as soloists as they are as a group, which is just... how? i seriously can't believe these four women somehow wound up in one group. even jyp, the founder of one of the big 3 kpop agencies, said the girls are four soloists that just happened to debut together in a group. he also specifically asked to share a stage with them at the mama awards last year "eclipse" really blew everyone away when it was released at the beginning of this year. it's actually pretty much the epitome of moonbyul's... moonbyulness... mamamoo as a whole is at the forefront of south korea's burgeoning feminism movement for so many reasons: the self-love, self-empowerment and female empowerment messages found in so much of their music, solo or group; the fact that the girls stand up for what they believe in, no matter what; the fact that each one has her own feminist battles that she fights for while supporting the battles of the other three members... for moonbyul, that battle is gender norms or gender stereotypes. she's always felt more comfortable with many things considered 'manly' or 'masculine' or 'tomboyish'. she prefers wearing suits or pants/slacks instead of typically more feminine clothing (though she's not as opposed to those styles as she used to be), she prefers being called handsome over pretty, she even prefers wearing cologne to perfumes (hwasa recently suggested one to her and she absolutely loves it). her preferred dance style is also more masculine, which has sometimes made her dancing with the group a bit difficult at times, despite her being half of the 'performance line' alongside wheein there's actually a really good interview on youtube of her discussing how she believes gender stereotypes, esp for music, shouldn't even be a thing. music is music, there shouldn't be 'this is boy or boy group music' or 'this is girl or girl group music'. and that's one of the reasons "eclipse" exists. it's what she's comfortable with and it's the culmination of much of her work at smashing those gender stereotypes (if interested, i can link the interview in a reply. it's details like i mentioned interspersed with her and the host both just being crazy comedians together) the song and mv, like you mentioned, are about the different aspects of her personality, two of them get named. 'moonstar the defender' is the white outfit with gems on her face (her name, byul, literally means star in korean. so she really is moonstar) and 'monster the devourer' is the black outfit with the intense makeup. byul herself is a huge fan of moonstar but much of the fandom went crazy for monster, which byul found hard to understand. also, lets just glance at moonstar's title there for a moment, and the lyrics about her being there to shine a light on people, to protect them... that's something else that's typically associated with masculinity. and here she is completely owning it as part of herself none of the other personas were given names and she never actually even discussed one, the soldier, so we're still not entirely sure what that one represents. the brown outfit is the 'real' her or 'neutral' her, what everyone sees while she's fighting herself inside. and then the one persona that you only see snippets of, tied to ropes, she explained to one fan that that is the most important persona. that's the side of herself trying to keep balance between moonstar and monster the dancing in the mv leans very heavily towards masculine, which is byul's preferred style, as mentioned earlier. she's gotten some flak for it, like she always does, but the vast majority have embraced it the same way she has. byul has always had male backup dancers for her segments of their songs during live performances, so this was pretty much just an extension of that. she even went to a choreographer known for working exclusively with boy groups, especially exo. and kasper, the choreographer, said he was profoundly impressed by byul and all her dancers, both male and female (they did a female only performance version of the song) and that he's extremely glad to have worked with her as the first female artist he ever choreographed for editing to add: knew i was forgetting to mention something here... the two male voices you can hear on this song are actually members of her junior groups, oneus and onewe. both are also groups from her agency, rbw, and the two are literal brother groups... they each have one half of a pair of twins in them. oneus is more a typical kpop boy group, they focus on hard choreo (that they create themselves) while still singing live. onewe is an actual band, all the members play instruments, most of the members sing. highly recommended groups to check out, as are the other groups from rbw, vromance (vocal heavy male quartet, currently on hiatus as the members do their mandatory military service) and purplek!ss (a soon to debut girl group that has already released a lot of cover content on their yt channel). there's also d1verse, a vietnamese boy group created by rbw in vietnam

The choreo in Absence, is gorgeous as is the MV. That is nice but never forget, it's about the sound. There are lots of pretty MV's and choreo's but in the end of the day you *listen* to a song. One of the reason I like listening to songs in other languages is because the purity of it all. Sure, great lyrics are fantastic (and Mamamoo and it's members have some great lyrics) but it's the feels an artist can convey with the sound that makes you bob, sway, dance or curl up and revel in the tears welling up. And here Moonstar shows that she can get one to do all of that with just a few songs. The rapper is usual seen as the weak link in a group, someone that often can just barely keep a tune. Moonstar shows that she is a star in her own right. She can dance, she can choreo, she can be funny, she can be a troll, she can be 'cheesy', she can write lyrics and she can sing. She might not have the range of her fellow members but in any other group she could be the lead. This is one of the reasons that I love Mamamoo because no matter together, in sub units or as solo artists, they all absolutely kill it.

Man, I'm late to the party. Eclipse tells a story and serves a purpose that are separate from each other. The lyrics and choreography tell about the struggles of Byul controlling her 2 sides of herself and trying to keep them in balance which is demonstrated by the scenes of her dressed in a mix of black and white and pulling ropes that extend off screen for each side of herself. She refers to the 2 sides of herself by different names "Moonstar" which is portrayed by her when she is dressed in white. In interviews she referred to this side specifically as "Moonstar The Protector" which lines up with her lyrics "Moonstar will protect you" and "I'll become a star and shine my light on you." Her given name "Byul" actually means star in Korean and she uses Moonstar as a stage name and to reference herself in a lot of Mamamoo's songs. Her other side is referred to as "Monster" and in interviews more specifically as "Monster The Devourer" and is represented by her when she is dressed in black. Monster is also clearly referenced in the lyrics "A monster that will hide behind the moon and swallow the light." She then makes her preference for "Moonstar" known "When the moon covers the sun; When the light is lost and darkness falls; I'll become a star and shine on you (I'll shine); Overcome the darkness light up light up light up; I will save you with my light." It may be a stretch but in this part of the song she uses the 2 parts of her name (Moonstar) referencing both the moon and becoming a star. The purpose, or more Byul's main goal, with Eclipse was to blur the gender lines of the industry. She talked in interviews about how she wanted to show that there was no such thing as a "Boy group" dance or a "girl group" dance. The industry and many people in general are pre-occupied with gender norms and assigning things as "boy things" or "girl things" and "boy behavior" or "girl behavior." Byul has always been kind of tomboy-ish and one of her goals, not exclusive in Eclipse but in general, is to blur the line on gender norms.

oh man, quite a selection you've picked for byul's solo songs here, you accidentally made sure to get a real musical variety, something mamamoo's always been great about both as a group and solo... but this trio of songs... so vastly different from each other that it's almost hard to believe they came from the same artist "selfish" was moonbyul's solo song on the group's 'red moon' album in the four seasons project, where they released 4 albums over the course of a year, each themed around a color, a season and a member of the group. 'red moon' was red, summer, and moonbyul. the 'focus' for each member was them getting the album named after one of their nicknames and getting a solo song on the album. byul also had a bit of extra on 'red moon' since "midnight summer dream" was written about one of her childhood stories red velvet has been some of mamamoo's closest idol friends for years now, though the groups also haven't been able to spend a lot of time together in recent years with how busy they've both constantly been. they went out of their way to meet each other around a year after their debut (since the groups debuted just a few months apart) and used to spend lots of their off-time together just hanging out until rv's curfew hit and they had to take off. byul and seulgi talked a bit about that when they were together on a show called 'idol drama operation team' and a recent episode of irene and seulgi's reality show thing had byul as one of the guests (joy of red velvet was the other. and irene seemed disappointed that byul didn't bring anyone else from mmm with her) each member of mmm and rv likely has individual idols from other groups they're closer to than members of the other group mentioned here, but as a whole, the two groups are likely the closest to each other. red velvet members especially have said that multiple times. ...dunno why i'm sharing all that about their friendship here... it just felt needed for some reason there are actually several interesting live versions of "selfish" out there: one where solar sings seulgi's part, one (mama 2018) where chaeyoung of izone sings seulgi's part and one (moonbyul's solo at their four season f/w concert) where moonbyul sings both parts herself...while seulgi is in the audience watching... after singing seulgi's part, byul specifically thanked those three for singing that part since she didn't realize just how difficult it was until she did it herself
