Mumbai's New Airport Terminal -T2 . Amitabh Bachan

Narrated By Amitabh Bachan
The new terminal has been built by the GVK-led consortium has been built at a cost of over 2 Billion USD.
The T2 covers an area of over 1400 acres. Granite that can cover 27 football fields, and over 18000 metric tonnes of steel have been used in its construction.
Though no longer India's busiest airport, the four-storey terminal will cater to an estimated 40 million passengers annually.
The new terminal has 188 check-in counters, 60 immigration counters for departing passengers, and 76 immigration counters for incoming fliers.
To get around, passengers will have access to 47 escalators and 73 elevators.
For those who stress about travelling to the domestic Sahar airport for connecting flights, a six-lane elevated expressway will ease things.
A multi-level car park has also been built to accommodate 5,000 vehicles. T2 will mostly cater to international traffic, though a few domestic airlines are expected to move operations there later.Larsen & Toubro was awarded the contract to construct the new Terminal 2 which was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM). The terminal covers a land area of 210,000 square metres and will replace the existing International Terminal. The entire project is estimated to cost INR98 billion (US$1.6 billion) and employ over 12,000 workers. The X-shaped terminal has a total floor area of 439,000 square metres across four floors and will eventually handle both domestic and international passengers. It will include new taxiways and apron areas for aircraft parking designed to cater to 40 million passengers annually. The iconic structure will have boarding gates on two piers extending southwards from a central processing building featuring a 42 metre high roof employing over 20,000 metric tonnes of fabricated steel covering 30 acres. The new T2 terminal building will operate Multiple Aircraft Ramp System (MARS) stands and swing gates, so that a single stand can accommodate either one wide body aircraft or two narrow body aircraft, in either domestic or international configuration. The terminal will be connected by the six-lane Sahar Elevated Access Road to the Western Express Highway. A metro rail link to the terminal is also planned.
The Terminal will host the world's largest public art programme with 6,000 pieces of Indian art from the 8th to the 19th Century being displayed on 18 foot high walls along the terminal's corridors and other standalone display areas totalling 1.2 kilometres in length.
The new terminal will have around 21,000 square meters of retail space, lounges and travel services, over 5,000 square meters of landscaping and a multi level car park for 5,000 cars. T2 will have 188 check-in counters and 60 immigration counters for departing passengers, and 10 baggage carousels and 76 immigration counters for arriving passengers. To transfer passengers across its four levels, the building will have 47 escalators and 73 elevators. The terminal will also feature 41 travelators. In the initial phase of development due for completion in 2013, the apron adjoining T2 will provide a total of 48 stands including 3 Code F stands (for the A-380). In the final phase of development a total of 38 Code E/F contact stands, 14 Code E/F remote stands and 19 Code C remote stands will be provided (total 71 stands).[39] International operations from the building will commence in January 2014, while the domestic operations will be transferred from the Santacruz terminal to T2 by the last quarter of 2014.
The terminal will also boast 21,000 square meters of area for retail shopping.
The new terminal will have 2300 CCTV cameras for passenger safety and 4100 public address speakers.

It was a proud moment for a PROUD Mumbaikar like me :). I was speechless with tears in my eyes. Finally Mumbai (& India) had a world class airport terminal. Truly International. The feeling of joy cannot be compared to anything else to see your motherland and hometown truly arrive. Thanks to Air India who moved their domestic operations to this Terminal, I could finally see it for myself. My last trip abroad was before this terminal opened and I did not have anything coming soon. So I was thinking when will my chance come and OH boy, Air India finally made this happen. As they say, my 56 inch chest was filled with pride as I came out of the terminal, enjoyed every bit of it and of course looking forward to using this in future (with Pride and proudly flying the National Carrier). Adding more business for Air India in the process ;). Those were the days in India and these are the days in India. God is truly great!

I wish now they would clean up the Mithi River, over a 100 million dollars has been spent and the filth of the once beautiful rivulet has now been reduced to a sewage dump. Wish they had a private company like GVK take on this project with the same fervor and enthusiasm and cleaned up. Pls see on youtube how S Korea cleaned up their filthy rivers in the 1960s! It is truly amazing. If only the politicians were not so corrupt

The common people of India need to be developed along with Architectural developments like this breathtaking one. Whenever I visit Mumbai with my parents who were born there, I always notice the common person spitting or blowing his / her nose on public footpaths. The Airport authority need to ensure that there is enough capacity to watch over the bad habits of some of these people and issue fines whilst also allocating a budget for general upkeep and maintenance of the new terminal so that it never fails to impress even in 10 years time. Well done Mumbai.

good engineering achievement.but why policy makers invested in modernising airport rather than modernising train network of mumbai?it is the need of the hour to modernise mumbai's crippling local train network...middle class people travel by trains daily but they travel by airports once in few years or perhaps never travel by airport...i saw this terminal when i was returning home by a flight...i was impressed by it's majesticity...but the next day I realised that whatever i saw was just a illusion..a fade memory..the reality was that i was in a heavily crowded mumbai train, which i barely entered by using my poor wrestling skills. i was standing, crushed by ten other people in hot sweaty environment..and yes,i was travelling by first class...

Airports are an important source of economy. Not only passenger travel but goods as well. It is also a lucrative opportunity . But as you rightly pointed out the present government has taken on steps for modernisation of Indian Railways not only with High Speed rail but with constructions going on the Dedicated Freight Corridor at full pace , and modernisation of existing station hubs followed by expansions. Within 10 years you will see major transformation of the Railways ..As more and more laws gets freed up and the private sector of India and abroad works at par with the Government the railways will be glorified.

That's exactly what I'm saying you dumb fuck. Can't you read? The UPA framed policies that accelerated infrastructure projects and investments. Delhi Metro for example, is the world's 7th largest already, all happened under Congress rule (center and state). What has Modi or Maharashtra CM has done so for that is truly revolutionary on the scale of Delhi Metro or our Mega Airpots? That's the question.

I've travelled through this airport twice so far. Its really beautiful. However, they need to give some soft skill training to the Security staff and also the cleaners. I found one cleaner arguing with a passenger when he pointed out that the toilet was dirty. This is not the way to behave with passengers. Also, the number of toilets are woefully inadequate in this airport. I'm surprised the planners didn't think of this while designing. At any given time there are 5 or 6 people waiting to use each toilet and there are only 3 or 4 toilets per Wash room. Not enough when you consider hundreds of passengers are passing through this airport and many Indians have to travel for many hours from other smaller towns and cities by road to get here. Many will definitely want to use the toilets, young and old. I hope the authorities take notice as I mentioned it in their feedback.

Spitting, blowing noses is common thing in India and same thing happens in airports. We strive to do best as we can, but there are many people from India who cannot rectify this behaviour, this will always carry on, and i think it will take heck of a long time till our people change.

well i hope since they are so proud of it, they now learn to keep it clean, and not spit and blow their noses in every corner of the airport and spit paan and throw rubbish here and there, and finally, be more gentlemen with their elders and the women by getting off from where they are sat and let them sit, that is what you call a gentlmen, not someone wearing a tie and shirt calling them gentlemen.

+Shivendra Shukla the airport is run by the govt! Im sure someone is in charge of the airport and that someone is a government employee. So, they already know about it. But like everything in India, they will 'adjust' instead of doing anything, even if it means they personally get bitten and fall sick.

London has 4 airports, London City Airport, London Heathrow Airport, London Gatwick & London Stansted Airport, India you still have a very, very long way to catch up. When it comes to PROUD & PRIDE, i will be the first one to RANK you in NUMBER 1 as the public of INDIA is full of PRIDE!!!

+shripad kulkarni Some people like to hear the FACTS, some do not like to listen to FACTS, sometimes truth pains when someone hears it, but it is the FACT, the person who wrote to me known as ADITYA KHUNETA, i think it was very painful for him to hear that his airport was not the best and he felt humilated about it, i wrote according to my knowledge and not to downgrade India, my parents are also from India, but I am U.K born, Mr Khuneta has no knowledge of anything but his parents only taught him to hate others, and every Indian i hear when they have a grudge against something, the first thing is PAKISTAN. I am a civilised person, but i can lose my civilisation with such people, who is to be blamed for all this hate, the elders!!!

No matter what India may get others to build for for it, the sad unchangeable fact is that the indian-ness shines through all the artefacts, scrips, decoration etc..the unhygienic manners of Indians. City of dreams? You are treated by a nightmare no sooner than you get out of the airport! This airport would really speak for itself if only Indians could be taught to behave! Next India should build an equally impressive structure - a college to teach its people how to behave on the international stage. And why name that gateway after Shivaji? That's probably to appease the Shiv Sena. If that didn't happen, the airport might not have been built. Sad but true.
